Join us for a night of learning how to use the pottery wheel – absolutely no experience is required for this fun, hands-on night working with clay. Effective September 2024, Build A Bowl workshop fees will include firing and glazing for a maximum of two bowls per student. Bowls selected for firing must be structurally sound, meaning that there are no holes in the vessel and walls are neither too heavy or too thin to withstand firing. Additional bowls may be fired and glazed at a cost of $10 per bowl provided these also meet the technical requirements for a finished bowl. When attending any of our public programs please consider bringing non-perishable food and hygiene products to donate to the Burlington Food Bank. Like so many communities, Burlington has seen an alarming 20% increase in the need for assistance with groceries over the last year. We are collecting community contributions to support the food bank’s efforts in meeting the growing demand for food security. About the Instructor: Nesli Pakkal has been a passionate potter and a member of the Art Gallery of Burlington and the Burlington Potters Guild since 2017. Her primary focus is wheel work. She creates a wide range of both contemporary and traditional pieces including a line of Ottoman/Turkish designs that back to the 15 th century. She continues to refine her skills through the Mohawk College Ceramics program, and by taking advanced classes from master potter Donn Zver. Nesli’s work has been on exhibit at AGB. She takes part in seasonal sales of Burlington Potters Guild and Hamilton Potters Guild. She loves to teach and transfer her passion and knowledge to people interested in playing with clay. Learn how to bring new meanings to bear on a nontraditional textile such as photographs by using needle, thread, and simple stitches. Age: 18+ Date: Saturday November 16 Time: 1:30 - 4:30 pm Cost: M $40 and NM $45 Instructor: Kate Jackson Kate Jackson will demonstrate how embroidery can be used as a form of drawing on photographs. In her own practice, Kate laboriously embroiders perishable materials, such as paper towels and breakfast cereal, to investigate what it means to give love, time, and attention to what may soon expire. She will demonstrate how to bring new meanings to bear on a nontraditional textile such as photographs by using needle, thread, and simple embroidery stitches to embellish a photograph of your choice. All materials are provided but participants are encouraged to bring their own photographs and embroidery supplies if they wish. Some prior experience with embroidery is helpful – but not necessary. Make unique hand-printed images in the darkroom that reflect on memory by using objects that bend light and create shadows Age: 18+ Dat: Wednesday November 20 Time: 6:30 - 9:30 PM Cost: M $50 and NM $55 Instructor: Sonya de Laat While rooted in principles of black and white photography, chemigrams are a radically different and creative darkroom technique. Using resists and objects to manipulate light and darkroom chemistry onto photographic paper and film, you’ll come away with one-of-a-kind archival images. Your experimentation with different applications of darkroom techniques will result in diverse shades, colours and shapes caused by shadows and chemical reactions creating images that are as representational or abstract as you determine. All the while, you’ll develop fundamental darkroom proficiencies including respect for chemicals, darkroom safety, history of black and white photography, and a basic understanding of the physics and chemistry of analogue photography. She is an active member of the Latow Photographers Guild, housed within the Art Gallery of Burlington, currently acting as the guild’s secretary. Sonya has a Diploma in Photography from Algonquin College, and degrees in Anthropology (McMaster) and Media Studies (Western), where she focused on developing professional photography skills and studied histories of humanitarian photography. When not engaging in her creative photography practice, she works as a Research Associate at McMaster University and a Historical Interpreter at Whitehern Historical House & Garden for the City of Hamilton. Join us on November 27th, Thanksgiving Eve, for our annual night of deep belly laughter, hosted by Kendall Farrell. Kendall Farrell is a New York City-based standup comedian from Vermont. Named a ‘Comic To Watch’ at the 2019 New York Comedy Festival, his work has been featured on SiriusXM and showcased at numerous festivals, including the Brooklyn Comedy Festival and the Women in Comedy Festival. He won Vermont’s Funniest Comedian Contest and has performed at acclaimed venues like Caroline’s and The Stand. In New York, he hosts shows such as “Just Come” and “Rude.” Max Higgins is a New York-based comedian from Burlington, VT. He brought his solo show “The Underdog” to the 2024 Edinburgh Fringe Festival and has performed at the Bell House and VidCon. Max has opened for national acts like Randy Feltface and won Seven Days’ Reader’s Choice award for Best Comedian in Burlington. You may have seen him at the Rogue Island Comedy Festival or chatting up your dad at the supermarket. Ash Diggs is a stand-up comedian originally from Vermont, known for candid performances on themes of addiction and mental health. He has been featured on Means TV, Don’t Tell Comedy, and at New York Comedy Club. Diggs has performed across the country, earning the right to open for some of his heroes, including Ilana Glazer, Tim Meadows, Joyelle Johnson, Moshe Kasher, Cameron Esposito, and more. After starting his career in Burlington, he moved to Queens, NY, in 2021. He is currently on the faculty at Second City NYC and working on a podcast called Get Out The House! Liam Welsh is a stand-up comedian originally from Vermont, now based in Brooklyn, NY. He began his career in Burlington, where he regularly performed at the Vermont Comedy Club. Welsh was the First Runner Up in the 2019 Vermont’s Funniest Comedian Contest and has opened for notable comedians like Janelle James and Michael Rapaport. He co-hosts a weekly show called Free Stuff, showcasing local talent and adding to the comedy community. Jared Hall is a prominent comedian based in Vermont, known for his sharp wit. He won both the Vermont Comedy Club's Improv Contest and the title of Vermont's Funniest Comedian in 2022. Hall regularly performs at the Vermont Comedy Club and has opened for national headliners, including Michael Ian Black and Todd Barry. His humor blends relatable insights, making him a favorite among audiences. Nic Sisk is a comedian now based in New York City who previously made her mark in the Vermont comedy scene. Known for her engaging performances, she has appeared at the Vermont Comedy Club and participated in competitions like Vermont's Funniest Comedian. Nic is recognized for her contributions to the local comedy community and is developing her career in larger markets. Dave Anderson is a very funny NYC based comedian who has worked with The Vermont Comedy Club and co-ran Meet The Press comedy with Ash Diggs. Doors 6:30pm, show at 7:30pm. Friday November 29th, 2024 Sign-in 8:45-9:30am | Sign-out 3:30-4:00pm Age: 4 - 6 Cost: M $55 and NM: $65 It's all art all day long when you spend your PA Day at the Art Gallery of Burlington! Campers will learn new skills and create artwork inspired by our current exhibitions. With visits to the galleries, outdoor breaks (weather permitting), some time for free play, and plenty of skill development in the studio, this is a day made especially for young artists. Registration open to campers aged 4 as of May 1, 2024 Please note: If courses are purchased at member price, and membership is not active, you will be charged for the membership. ART MATERIALS: Included with registration fee. WHAT TO WEAR: Clothing appropriate for messy work in the studio – something that nobody would mind if it got stained. Consider an over-sized shirt for regular use when making art before, during and after camp. Closed-toe shoes are mandatory. Note: We go outside after eating lunch, please wear or bring sunsreen and weather-appropriate clothing. WHAT TO BRING: Snacks and a lunch that are nut-free (we take two snack breaks and one lunch break), a change of clothes (just in case!), a large box or bag to bring art home.
