The Mosaic Scale: Intro to Dramaturgical Thinking Workshop. Emily is an exceptionally knowledgeable, curious and adventurous dramaturg. Asked all the right questions, accepted my silly answers and enabled my mischief. Julian Brett (Theatre maker) I thoroughly enjoyed the course and felt it broadened my understanding of dramaturgy. I look forward to implementing the mosaic scale in my own work, and I feel ready and able to develop my own dramaturgical practice after attending the course. Previous Mosaic Scale course participant. This course will give you some tools to equip you with a process you can follow to dramaturg your own work and the work of others. This is an INTRODUCTORY course. Over Saturday and Sunday we will look at different aspects of dramaturgical thinking but whether the focus is on literary dramaturgy or process dramaturgy there will be practical ways to apply it to your own work if you are a writer or theatre maker. What we will look at: Saturday. 1: Introduction to dramaturgy. What is dramaturgy? Can you be taught how to do it? How do you even pronounce it? 2: Getting the write right. Introducing the literary dramaturgy version of The Mosaic Scale. Formalist processes and existing exercises the writer or theatre maker might like to use when starting to dramaturg their or someone else’s script or early in the devising process. Lunch. 3: The process of process. Exploring The Mosaic Scale system for devised theatre and process dramaturgy. Collaborative theatre making as dramaturgy and dramaturgy as collaboration. This will also look at the writer as collaborator. Exercises, considerations and questions to develop and dramaturg a theatre production during the devising process and in rehearsal. Sunday. 1:Spaces and faces. This session looks at the audience. What are the needs and considerations for specific performance spaces? What do audiences want? 2:Really feeling it now. Phenomenology and viscerality on the page and on the stage. The uncanny, the visceral, and how to encourage these responses from your audience. Lunch. 3: Style and substance is an introduction to dramaturgy and ethos. Where are you coming from as a dramaturg? The circularity inherent to dramaturgical thinking is covered as we wrap up the course and bring it all together. Who am I? Emily is a theatre maker, writer & dramaturg with a specialism in puppetry. She is co-founder of Croon productions puppet company, their work has been seen in London, on tour across the UK, Berlin, Prague and Minneapolis. Having worked extensively as a performance lecturer in HE and FE and for the educational provision of theatres, (Bristol Old Vic, Tobacco Factory Thetre, Roses theatre). She has taught at Derby University, Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Bath Spa University & Bristol University. For over 20 years she has written, directed and dramaturged projects in theatre, puppetry, reminiscence theatre, youth theatre, and TIE. Emily holds a Doctorate in Scriptwriting & Dramaturgy and a Masters in scriptwriting (Distinction) from Bath Spa University. Throughout her research she created the Mosaic Scale, a 5-step active dramaturgical process to develop and refine a script. Her guidebook to dramaturgy, 1000 Ways to Ask Why: Introduction to Dramaturgical Thinking, will be published by Routledge in 2024. Emily is a board member of Dramaturgs Network. Arts Orchestra
This spectacular performance includes Antonio Vivaldi’s beloved cycle of violin and string concertos, «The Four Seasons,» and Astor Piazzolla’s passionate «The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires.» Vivaldi’s «The Four Seasons» is one of his most renowned works, synonymous with his name. The four concertos, «Spring,» «Summer,» «Autumn,» and «Winter,» have captivated audiences for three centuries. In the 20th century, Argentine composer Astor Piazzolla created «The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires,» breathing new life into tango. Piazzolla’s cycle contrasts baroque motifs with a blend of classical, jazz, and Afro-Spanish traditions. His compositions feature vibrant emotions, sparkling colours, hot Argentine rhythms, unusual harmonies, tango motifs, and incredible expression. Mystery Ensemble invites you to journey from the 21st century into authentic baroque and then into 20th-century Argentina. The ensemble’s sensitive approach to both composers, combined with a touch of drive and charismatic presentation, creates a mesmerising new universe of sounds. Duration: 1 hour and 15 minutes, with a 20-minute interval (Doors open 30 minutes prior to the scheduled start time & late entry is not permitted) PERFORMERS Mystery Ensemble Mystery Ensemble is a group of professional musicians performing unique programs on non-standard venues around the UK. Join us at St George’s Hall in Bristol on November 3rd for an evening featuring the famous Antonio Vivaldi cycle «The Four Seasons» in the unique interpretation of contemporary composer Max Richter, performed by the extraordinary Mystery Ensemble. Max Richter is the composer of music for dozens of feature films and documentaries. The European Film Academy voted him the best film composer in 2008. He changed the music of Antonio Vivaldi in the spirit of minimalism and postmodernism. Recomposed by Max Richter: Vivaldi, The Four Seasons is one of Richter’s most famous works. After its release in 2012, the recording topped the iTunes Classical Music charts in over 20 countries. Max Richter has recorded 12 solo albums and performed at the London Barbican, the Paris Philharmonic, the Sydney Opera and the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, and among his projects are the Sum Opera and the Infra ballet (choreographed by Wayne MacGregor) at Covent Garden. Richter’s music is heard in many performances around the world, as well as in the films «Shutter Island» by Martin Scorsese, «Last Love on Earth» by David Mackenzie, «Waltz with Bashir», for the soundtrack to which he received the award «Best Composer» from the European Film Academy. The Four Seasons by Antonio Vivaldi is one of the most famous and frequently performed works of classical music. The Italian master wittily and gracefully captured in music the way his contemporaries saw the world and nature. The Vivaldi cycle is both a philosophical reflection of a magnificent illustrated «calendar» and a «sightseeing tour» of the regions of Italy. Recent digital musical instruments have questioned the traditional relationship between the individual musician and their instrument. As well as creating opportunities to inter-connect performers’ systems, technology has opened a field of entangled instruments; where the players are so enmeshed as to be considered a single mutually played instrument. This workshop offers a practical exploration of the experience of playing and designing two-person entangled instruments for close mutual participation. Participants will start with a series of collaborative ice-breakers, designed to entangle and lay the foundations of a care-based experience. This will be followed by a period of playing and reflecting on Steve’s existing instruments in pairs and in a group context. Then finally we will conclude within a period of practical instrument making. Lunch included. Information Source: Centre for Creative Technologies, University of Bristol | eventbrite

Releasing your Voice through Movement and Play14th November 2024, 18:45 - 20:00 | Wild Goose Space @ The Yard, Bristol Facilitated by Camilla Mason Together we will learn;Silly and playful ways to express the voice, body and creativityCreateconnections with othersOpen up creative freedomI believe that voice work doesn't need to be scary, serious, or performative. Common fears about singing or sounding good often prevent us from accessing our voice, creating further blockagesand resistance. The stories and narratives we hold about our voice can sometimes stop us from experiencing the joy and connectionit brings when we unite with this universal instrument we all possess. In the holistic and spiritual world, there is often a lot of seriousness surrounding voice work, which may unintentionally perpetuate the ideathat we must always sound good. Who is this for?All genders, ages and backgroundsAnyone looking to enhance the power of their voice in a playful, non-judgemental spaceNo singing, music or dance experience requiredInspired by improv theatre, play therapy, intuitive movement, and sound therapy techniques, this workshop is designed to create a joyful experiencefor people of all ages, genders and backgrounds. Play is a fundamental, powerful tool for healing and self-expression, and this space aims to break down barriersand ignite aspects of ourselves we might not have recognised before, using the power of our voices. What people have said: Camilla’s relaxed and authentic energy makes it easy to show up as myself in her spaces. What I love is she’s not forced, you can tell this comes from her soul to yours. Queer and trans-inclusive. - Liane “You demonstrated to me that with silence, stillness and internal visualisations, my creativity is always there, just beneath the surface, ready to be accessed. This was a valuable reminder that everything I need is already within me, if I can create this energy around my creative pursuits. This was a lightbulb moment - thank you!” - Seb About your FacilitatorWhether you're searching for stress relief, self-discovery, or creative inspiration, I am devoted to supporting your journey towards a life filled with creative embodiment, harmony, and fulfilment.
