However, these annotations often reveal clues that help us discover interesting details about the books themselves (who owned them; how, where, and when they were used etc.). Occasionally, if we are lucky, these clues allow us to rediscover facts about forgotten stories from our past.
In this talk I will give an overview of the interesting histories that we have uncovered when studying the annotation in mathematical and scientific texts in the Russell Library at Maynooth. For example, we discovered details about how the seminary was established at Maynooth and the staff who taught there, including their ownership of texts which were banned by the Catholic Church. More spectacularly, we found links to fake plots to assassinate King Charles II of England, and uncovered details of a long-forgotten 17th century transatlantic voyage. Dr Ciarán Mac an Bhaird is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Originally from Lough Egish, Co. Monaghan, he has lectured at Maynooth since 2007. Much of his research has focussed on measuring the impact of initiatives to support student learning and understanding of mathematics. More recently, his research has focussed on the history of mathematics, and especially studies of collections in libraries at Maynooth and elsewhere. Chair: Alexandra Caccamo Booking link

Booking link ____________ Monday 31 March, 19:00-20:30 From Maynooth to Los Angeles and back again: Eoghan Ó Gramhnaigh's epic journey
Dr Tracey Ní Mhaonaigh Eoghan Ó Gramhnaigh, a former student of St Patrick's and a former Professor of Irish, is laid to rest in the College Chapel, in a little oratory just to the right inside the gate. Ó Gramhnaigh did not, however, die in Maynooth, nor even in Ireland. Having gone to America in search of drier climes for health reasons, he died in 1899 aged just 36, and was buried in LA. This was a critical time for the Irish language. Conradh na Gaeilge had been established in 1893 and a new emphasis was being placed on Irish language and culture. Ó Gramhnaigh had been actively involved in Conradh na Gaeilge, which by the time of his death was gaining momentum in America, and his dedication to the Irish language was widely recognised. In fact, he was considered by many to be a symbol of Gaelic Ireland and the decision was taken, therefore, to exhume him and to bring him home; to lay him to rest among his own. Thus began a great journey from Los Angeles to Maynooth, with numerous stops along the way, numerous funerals, and Ó Gramhnaigh's fame growing with every stop. Tracey Ní Mhaonaigh is an Associate Professor and Head of the Nua-Ghaeilge Department here in Maynooth University, and editor of Irisleabhar Mhá Nuad. She graduated from Maynooth with a BA in Nua-Ghaeilge and History, an MLitt in Nua-Ghaeilge and a PhD in 2008 for which she carried out a critical analysis of Croí Cainte Chiarraí,a collection of more than 2 million words and phrases in Kerry Irish. She has a particular interest in linguistic and cultural history, and in the fortunes of the Irish language here in St Patrick's College. She has published a number of books in recent years, As Tobar an Doibhlinigh, Tháinig do Litir..., The Life and Legacy of An tAthair Eoghan Ó Gramhnaigh agus Ó Chófra Chuallacht Cholm Cille, as well as a number of volumes of Irisleabhar Mhá Nuad and Léachtaí Cholm Cille. An Dochtúir | Aula Maxima, Maynooth
Mar 5, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Maynooth
Is mór an onóir é do Chuallacht Cholmcille, cumann Gaelach na mac léinn in OMN, agus do Chumann Drámaíochta Ollscoil Mhá Nuad an scigdhráma ceolmhar dátheangach An Dochtúir le Séamus Ó Beirn a chur i láthair mar chuid de cheiliúradh na hOllscoile ar Sheachtain na Gaeilge 2025. Le tacaíocht ó Oifig na Gaeilge in Ollscoil Mhá Nuad, tabharfaidh an comhthionscadal seo leis an gCumann Drámaíochta deis luachmhar do Chuallacht Cholmcille an oidhreacht shaibhir a bhaineann leis an gCuallacht a aithint. Is léiriú úrnua é seo ar dhráma de chuid Uí Bheirn ón mbliain 1904 a léiríodh roimhe seo ag muintir na Cuallachta dhá bhliain agus nócha ó shin san áit chéanna cheannann, ár n-Aula Maxima stairiúil ar ár gCampas Theas álainn. Scríofa i gcroílár Athbheochan na Gaeilge, tá eilimintí aoracha agus scigdhrámata fuaite fite lena chéile in An Dochtúir, a bhaineann le Patrick O'Leary, dochtúir óg soineanta saonta ó Bhaile Átha Cliath gan aon Ghaeilge atá ag iarraidh bualadh in athuair lena ghrá geal Máire atá ina hathbheochanóir Gaeilge díograiseach agus a ghlacann le post, mar sin, in íoclann iargúlta i gConamara, beag beann air nach labhróidh a chuid othar ach Gaeilge. Ag cur lena thríoblóidí agus é ag iarraidh chuile shórt a oibriú amach, tá muintir na háite nach bhfuil puinn sásta, an mháthair chéile a d'fhéadfadh a bheith aige a bhfuil éirí in airde ag baint léi go mór agus deargnamhaid mórtasach an dochtúra a bhfuil sé mar uaillmhian aige Máire a phósadh. Sa léiriú fíor-chliste seo ar dhráma an-ghreannmhar, spreagúil, rómánsúil agus mothúchánach Uí Bheirn, cloisfear comhrá i nGaeilge agus i mBéarla agus cuirfear an-oíche shiamsaíochta ar fáil do chách, is cuma cén saghas caidrimh atá acu leis an nGaeilge. San fhoireann aisteoireachta tá mic léinn reatha Ollscoil Mhá Nuad amháin a thaispeánfaidh dúinn a gcumas aisteoireachta chomh maith le taispeántais de cheol traidisiúnta, amhránaíocht ar an sean-nós agus damhsa ar an sean-nós, anuas ar amhráin chlasaiceacha ó thús an fhichiú haois agus amhráin chomhaimseartha óna leithéid de Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan agus Kneecap. Cuallacht Cholmcille, the MU Irish-language student society, and the Maynooth University Dramatic Society will be proudly presenting the bilingual musical comedy An Dochtúir by Séamus Ó Beirn, as part of the University's celebrations of Seachtain na Gaeilge 2025. Supported by Oifig na Gaeilge in Maynooth University, Cuallacht Cholmcille, the oldest Irish-language student society in the country, will be honouring their rich heritage by collaborating with the MU Dramsoc on this innovative new production of Ó Beirn's 1904 play, which was previously staged by the Cuallacht ninety-two years ago in the exact-same location of the historic Aula Maxima on our beautiful South Campus. Written at the height of the Gaelic Revival, An Dochtúir weaves together satirical and farcical elements in telling its story of Patrick O'Leary, a naive, unsuspecting young doctor from Dublin who, on the trail of his Gaelic revivalist sweetheart Máire, arrives to take up a new position at an isolated dispensary in Connemara without a single word of Irish, not realising for a moment that his new patients won't speak a single word of English. Complicating Patrick's negotiation of the tricky situation in which he finds himself are the unimpressed locals, his social-climbing potential mother-in-law and his supercilious rival for Máire's affections. This ingenious production of Ó Beirn's hilarious, uplifting, romantic and poignant play features dialogue in both Irish and English and will serve as a brilliant night's entertainment for all, whatever their relationship with the Irish language may be. The cast is entirely comprised of current students of Maynooth University and will showcase not only their acting talents but will also feature stirring displays of traditional Irish singing and dancing and musicianship, as well early-twentieth-century standards and contemporary hits by the likes of Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan and Kneecap.
