Creating a Visual Journal (Sketchbook) A wonderful, expressive workshop of exploring how to create a stunning visual journal and how to use your sketchbook to record thought provoking memories, focusing on learning and experimenting with different skills and techniques. About this event An introduction on how to create and enjoy using a sketchbook to create a thought-provoking visual journal led by Yorkshire artist and designer Justine Hardisty. Join artist and designer Justine Hardisty for a workshop of exploring a wide range of ideas of what to include in your own unique visual journal within the pages of a sketchbook. Justine will guide you through step-by-step tips that will make your sketchbook a wonderful record, not only of your artistic journey but your thoughts, events, and observations in life that you can look back upon over time. Throughout the day you will learn valuable skills and techniques on ideas of what to include and how to enjoy your visual journey sketchbook that we would love you continue to develop at home! You will learn that to get the most out of your visual journal we suggest adding something to your sketchbook often. That may be recording a thought, idea or inspirational quote or merely sticking in a ticket or something you have found appealing. Sketchbooks are amazing tools for experimentation and interpretation as they allow you to practise skills and techniques using a wide range of media, tools and resources. You will find that creating a visual journal in a sketchbook is relaxing, rewarding and promotes good mental health and mindfulness when you become immersed within its pages. They enable you to create a wonderful visual record of events, places, likes and life experiences through imagery, words, colour, pattern as well as the special things that you collect and attach. Your sketchbook will become your constant companion and used for everything. You can doodle and sketch from observation or imagination, create patterns or practise lettering as well as paste in your favourite things. You can do anything- and- everything to make your unique visual journal personal and useful to you-the possibilities are endless! In this introductory workshop Justine will use her 40 years’ experience of being an artist and designer to immerse you into the world of visual journaling in a sketchbook through expression, interpretation and experimentation using a range of materials, media, skills and techniques. The workshop will involve: • Introduction into the composition of a visual journal in a sketchbook • Looking at what to include and how to personalise it • Learning how to be explorative, expressive and take risks with mark making • Learning and experimenting with techniques, skills, materials and media • Understanding how to build a unique visual journal page by page to make it a useful and enjoyable companion • You will receive a handout detailing the content of the workshop on how to create and use a sketchbook Skill level: Beginner- no painting or drawing experience necessary. Cost: £50 per person – all art materials and equipment use included. *Please note: As sketchbooks are very personal to everyone, we ask that you provide your own for the workshop.Which one you choose will very much depend on the materials you plan to use inside. For example, if you know you will be wanting to experiment with watercolours you will need a sketchbook that has thicker pages. Also, as your sketchbook will be your constant companion, we suggest that you purchase one of a size that is portable. Information Source: The Craft House | eventbrite

This workshop is part of our autumn series of botanical studies workshops celebrating nature and creativity. In these sessions participants will be given time to study and learn new skills from creatives, artists, designers and horticulturalists. This is a Japanese inspired floral design workshop that in part teaches the main principals of ikebana (the Japanese art of flower arranging) with its emphasis on finding inspiration in the natural world, and, in part demonstrates a modern interpretation of this ancient tradition. Whether you’re familiar with ikebana or not, you most likely have encountered its stylistic signatures; the embrace of negative space, a dramatic asymmetry and a focus on the engagement of the natural world. In this workshop we will guide you in creating beautiful bowl displays, offer up our knowledge of working seasonally and give you the tools and practical skills needed to create stunning displays at home. The workshop is for everyone and gives all participants plenty of time to learn, explore and be creative. You don’t need to bring anything with you, as all tools and materials needed for the session will be provided. The session lasts 2.5 hours and gives you plenty of time to learn, explore and be creative with flowers. Throughout the workshop, there will be light refreshments and drinks for you to enjoy whilst you create. This is a flower school session with all the materials needed for the session being provided and loaned by the flower school.

An evening with Yan Wang Preston at Bingley Camera Club Date: Monday 3rd February, 2025 Time: 7 pm Location: Bingley Methodist Church Dr Yan Wang Preston's talk is about how environmental topics connect to place and identity. She will introduce two of her major projects Mother River and Forest - shot in China, and in the second segment will talk about 'With Love. From an Invader' shot in the South Pennines. She will have some of her books for sale. We meet at Bingley Methodist Church Bingley BD16 4JU. Meetings start at 7.00pm ready for presentation start 7.15pm sharp and will usually finish around 9.00pm. There is a tea break around 8 pm. More details about Bingley Camera Club here: https://bingleycameraclub.co.uk/.- In her project 'Mother River' Dr Preston photographed the entire 6211 km Yangtze river from its source. The project is both a physical odyssey through China and a metaphor for its evolution, travelling from the traditional culture still seen to be seen at its source through to the rampant modernisation approaching its mouth. In Forest, she documents ecology recovery and landscaping projects investigating the politics of recreating forests and natural environments in China's mega-cities. In With Love. From an Invader, Yan photographed a rhododendron bush in the South Pennines every other day for an entire year. it raises questions within the context of eco-politics: in an area completely changed due to industry, with no natural vegetation, can a ‘non-native and invasive species’ have a positive impact on local biodiversity? Preston’s work with the invasive species asks further questions: to what extent has the multicultural character of the British society been accepted as its national and native character? Wang Preston’s practice is characterised by rigorous research processes led by her committed embodiment within the land to gain first-hand, skin-to-skin-like understanding. Her work is internationally and critically acclaimed. In 2023 she was the recipient for the inaugural RPS Award for Environmental Responsibility. She won 1st Prize in Professional Landscape, Sony World Photography Awards (2019); 1st Prize in Professional Commission, Syngenta Photography Prize (2017); and the Shiseido Photographer Prize at the Three Shadows Photography Annual Award in Beijing, China (2016). She was awarded as one of the Hundred Heroines by the Royal Photographic Society in 2018. Website: https://www.yanwangpreston.com/ Information Source: Bingley Camera Club | eventbrite
