Nature Writing Workshop | Nower Wood Educational Nature Reserve
Aug 30, 2025 (UTC+1)
Leatherhead
Learn how tuning into the natural world can inspire and enrich your writing. Award-winning author and former journalist, Alice Fowler, will suggest ways to write about nature in fiction and non-fiction, both directly - as eco-fiction or a call to action - and as a powerful backdrop to our work.
In this friendly and enabling beginners & improvers workshop, we will:
Walk through the woodland and look closely at the beautiful natural environment of Nower Wood, engaging all the senses to bring life to our writing.
Broaden our perspective to explore how observation of nature can drive setting, character and plot.
Undertake short writing exercises and share our writing if we wish.
Look at examples of nature writing, in fiction and non-fiction, and discuss what makes them work.
Explore why including nature in our writing is so important.
Leave with a piece of writing of up to 500 words, to submit for publication or develop further.
Everyone is welcome, just bring pen and paper (or a laptop if you prefer) and a willingness to write!
This education centre enables students to learn in any weather while enjoying nature.
Bio: Alice Fowler is an award-winning writer of short stories and longer fiction. Her debut short story collection,

Survey & Recording Techniques for Beginners | Nower Wood Educational Nature Reserve
May 30, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Leatherhead
Monitoring the species living in a specific area has always been import, but as our climate changes it has become even more vital to understand the development of these life cycles. We have therefore created this course for those who have recently taken on the maintenance of a plot of land or simply have a general interest the natural world.
You will be taught how to accurately collect data through surveys to create a base line. From this you will be shown how to capture and record that information which will help to determine the status of a species.
There are a host of different techniques used when surveying. Therefore, on this beginners’ course we will be concentrating on just three of them; moth trapping, a breeding bird survey and the use of a quadrat. Each delegate will have the chance to collect data using each of these methods.
Guidance and instruction will then be provided on how to record and use this information effectively.
Tutor Profile: Dan Banks
'I have always been interested in the natural world. As a teenager, I became increasingly fascinated in ornithology, subsequently studying Ecology and Wildlife Conservation at Brighton University. I then worked in South Africa on a project mapping the nests of raptors. I am now a licensed ringer with the British Trust for Ornithology, adding to my growing knowledge of how and why birds migrate. I have spent time on a migration ringing project in Greece, where we were recording migrating raptors and other birds moving through.
Having volunteered with the Sussex Wildlife Trust, I am now employed by the Surrey Wildlife Trust as the Citizen Science Officer. It is exciting to be working on the Space4Nature project, where we are recording different plant species for use in satellite technology. I also communicate regularly with the Surrey Biodiversity Information Centre as well as meeting with and supporting a variety of local recording groups.
In my spare time I regularly go birdwatching and enjoy reading about different bird types. I have currently seen over 150 different bird species found in the UK.'

Jun 19, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Leatherhead
Walking through a sea of wildflowers can be an amazing experience. Why not enhance that enjoyment by learning how to identify each of the posies you see along the way?
You will spend the day with our SWT Ecology Services Ecologist, Isobel Girvan. She will start with a classroom session teaching you how to use various wildflower guides and their identification techniques. You will then walk across the road and venture into the diverse chalk grassland habitat of Headley Warren to test your newly gained knowledge. You'll bring your lunch and picnic surrounded by the beauty of this wildflower meadow.
This is the perfect day for newcomers just learning how to identify plants as well as those looking to further develop their wildflower knowledge.
Please be prepared for a fair amount of gentle walking, including up and down mild slopes and one rather steep one. There are also some lengthy periods of standing.
Tutor - Isobel Girvan
My name is Isobel Girvan and I have been working as an ecologist for over twenty years now and I still love it. There is always more to see, find out and learn about. I started off by completing my Geographical and Environmental degree at Roehampton Institute, after which I spent just over a year with the Somerset Environmental Records Centre. This began my passion for botanical surveying and identifying.
My current role is of Principal Ecologist at SWT Ecology Services. The work is varied from advising home owners about planning applications to supplying botanical species lists for local conservation volunteer groups to providing habitat management plans to local authorities.
I am a self-confessed geek, during the summer months I love nothing more than going out with local groups at weekends on botanical field meetings. Not only can I sometimes help to identify plants, but also learn new id points, whilst also picking up on the latest gossip and seeing beautiful places in Surrey and Hampshire. Come the winter months I then swop over to looking at mosses and liverworts, but this is an on-going project as I still regard myself as a novice.
I also have a family to look after, plenty of historical novels to read and box-sets to catch up on. I look forward to meeting you.

Medicinal Plants | Nower Wood Educational Nature Reserve
Jul 4, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Leatherhead
Throughout history our ancestors relied on the plants around them to maintain their health and wellbeing. Discover how we can still produce these creams, ointments, tinctures and liniments through careful identification, foraging and preparation. We will discuss the abundance of folklore and myths surrounding this practice before being shown the best ways to safely dry and mix items collected from ancient woodland.
This is a practical course, so we will there will be a walk in uneven woodland where we will identify locally growing plants.
All materials will be provided but you may wish to bring your own gardening gloves. You will leave with a few samples of the mixtures made on the day.
Tutor: Emma Wetherell – Surrey Wildlife Trust, Education and Engagement Officer
My journey into medicinal plants started many years ago, after my daughter experienced a condition that was treated with a common plant found in our verges. Since then, my thirst for medicinal plant knowledge has grown and using medicinal plants has become a way of life. I have fallen in love with inspiring others to understand just a small part of our heritage and how common plants have produced a variety of our everyday over the counter medicines.

All About Bees | Nower Wood Educational Nature Reserve
Jul 11, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Leatherhead
Bees make honey, they live in a hive, and they look after their queen…right?
The answer is
yes
–if you’re talking about honeybees. But not if you’re talking about the other 270 species of bee found in our country!
This unique course, delivered by Erica Evans from Hive Helpers, will explore the importance of both managed and wild bees in Surrey, and how these fascinating pollinators live, reproduce, and interact with each other.
Seen from the perspective of an eco-aware beekeeper, Erica will explain the pollen and nectar needs and uses of different bee species. We’ll also look at honey production from flower to jar, followed by a honey tasting, and learn about the extraordinary communication tool that is the ‘waggle dance’.
We’ll familiarise ourselves with the characteristics of various bee species, along with tips on how to identify them in the field, then put these skills into practice by searching for bees in the ancient woodland of Nower Wood.
The day will conclude with a talk about how we can all make responsible changes to benefit these declining but essential insects, be it in a simple window box, a garden, or community green space.
Tutor Details - Erica Evans:
Erica Evans is the Founder of Hive Helpers CIC, a project which combines nature conservation and sustainable beekeeping activities to improve local habitats and local wellbeing. Erica trained at Blackhorse Apiaries, before introducing disadvantaged children to the joys of beekeeping at a local charity. Happiest outside in the fresh air, and an avid wild bee enthusiast, she's keen to share her love of the natural world with others, and to raise awareness about the plight of British pollinators.
