This lecture by Ellie Grimes and Dan Wales-Hart is one of three lectures introducing and exploring the topic of Carbon Offsetting held in cooperation with Greener Berwick . Looking at carbon credits and how they work in Northumberland, Dan will introduce the North East Carbon and Nature Marketplace. Ellie will introduce the other work of the NZNEE Partnership, and how the Marketplace can be the central one-stop shop for nature recovery, decarbonisation, and social value benefits. Ellie, who is the NZNEE Programme Manager, will introduce the Partnership, and explain why it is an integral part of creating a cleaner, greener, fairer North East. She will also discuss the Partnership’s priority action areas, and reflect on its work so far. Ellie has a degree in Chemistry from Newcastle University, and a Master's exploring third-generation solar cells - a window into how science can solve real-world energy challenges. These aren’t just technical wins- they help lower bills, improve local infrastructure, and make the North East a better place to live and work. In her regional role, she helps bring organisations together- from local councils to community groups, the private sector to the 3rd sector - to accelerate climate progress. Dan Wales-Hart is the Policy Adviser for Environment, Coast and Rural matters at the North East Combined Authority. His background is in ecology, with a degree in Zoology, a Master’s in Ecological Consultancy, and he was a consultant ecologist for 10 years prior to joining the Combined Authority. He joined the Combined Authority in February 2025, and started work on building the North East Carbon and Nature Marketplace platform. The platform launched with 10,000+ Carbon Credits for sale, and £11.5m of nature recovery and decarbonisation projects ready to fund. Aside from the Marketplace, he works within the wider Energy & Environment team at the Combined Authority. He advises internal colleagues and external stakeholders on proposed policy around several key themes, including Local Nature Recovery Strategies, Biodiversity Net Gain, Climate Resilience, and Rural and Coastal issues and economy. Tea and coffee will be served, and all are welcome. There is no need to print out and bring your ticket, as we will have a record of your booking. All bookings are subject to our Terms and Conditions . If you book this course online, we will hold your personal data in accordance with our privacy policy. Holy Island Tide Times: Friday 28th March - 05:15 until 11:35, 17:35 until 00:00 (Sat) Migration and movement across borders has always fascinated the human race. But in a day and age where everything lies at one’s fingertips it can be hard to empathise with the practicalities of a world that does not exist anymore… At the height of the Renaissance, émigré musicians such as the Italian Alfonso Ferrabosco travelled across Europe in order to further their careers. These long journeys were often fraught with peril, and there was no guarantee of arrival on the other side. Any artistic material also had to travel alongside people. Imagine travelling with your life’s work in the hope that it would find acceptance in a new environment… During the last quarter of the 16th Century the genre of the Italian madrigal flourished in Northern Europe, with composers travelling in both directions through the Low Countries, France, Germany and Austria in order to learn and bring their knowledge and expertise to flourishing cities like Antwerp and London. Through this period, this music also gained recognition through the printing press. In Sudden Passions, L’Isola has designed a programme which tracks the journey of the madrigal from Italy to the North, following in the exact footsteps of our composers. During this process we will also piece together history, unveiling new academic discoveries from the University of Cambridge. Join us. The journey ahead may feel uncertain, but isn’t that part of the beauty? L’Isola is not a choir; it consists of 4-6 soloists. Consort singing, one to a part, is exposed and technically demanding. We strive not for ‘blend’ but for unity of sound, enriched by individual colour in a “creative democracy” which favours real-time artistic decision-making over predefined rules. The group hope you will experience the difference through sound: raw, organic, unfiltered, immersive. Information Source: Ensemble L'Isola | eventbrite

This lecture by Tom Reershemius is one of three lectures introducing and exploring the topic of Carbon Offsetting held in cooperation with Greener Berwick . Human-caused climate change is a result of greenhouse gases - mostly carbon dioxide - that we have emitted and have accumulated in the atmosphere, mostly since the 19th century. Carbon dioxide can also be removed from the atmosphere in various ways, such as by planting new trees, and doing this can “offset” some of these emissions. But is this a viable long-term strategy for dealing with emissions and limiting climate change? In this lecture Tom will introduce different methods of carbon dioxide removal, capture and storage; address what the differences are between “offsets”, “credits”, and “removals”; and discuss some of the opportunities and pitfalls of these practices. Tom Reershemius is a geochemist and soil scientist who works on carbon and other element cycles, and how they relate to climate change. His research is mostly focussed on measuring and quantifying greenhouse gas emissions and carbon storage impacts of agricultural practices. He is a Lecturer at Newcastle University since 2024, having done his PhD at Yale. Image: Rice paddy fields in Chhattisgarh, NE India. Here, powdered basalt rock is being spread to sequester carbon. Tea and coffee will be served, and all are welcome. There is no need to print out and bring your ticket, as we will have a record of your booking.
