Wild Basketry – Invasive Plant Cordage and Coiled Basketry, with Julia Han | Fibershed Learning Center
Jun 28, 2025 (UTC-7)
Point Reyes Station
This workshop is part one of a two-day weekend series on invasive plant basketry. Register for both classes, or for an individual class.
Spend the day with instructor
Julia Han
at the
Fibershed Learning Center
learning to identify fiber plants commonly found in California, and exploring how some of these can be foraged and transformed into beautiful and functional objects.
We’ll begin with a guided walk to explore a variety of native and non-native/invasive plants growing nearby, discussing how to harvest them responsibly and prepare them for use. Back in the workshop, you’ll learn tips on working with plant fibers and practice foundational basketry techniques including cordage-making and coiling. You’ll use these skills to create your own coiled basket using invasive plants.
This beginner-friendly workshop offers a hands-on introduction to natural fiber craft and working with foraged materials.
Take this as a standalone workshop, or pair it with
Day 2
to deepen your skills.
Full Weekend Description for Day 1 & 2:
Join us for a two-day, hands-on experience of identifying, foraging, and transforming common invasive grasses and other plants into beautiful and functional objects using essential basketry techniques. After these beginner-friendly workshops, you’ll leave with your own handmade works and the skills to continue working with foraged materials on your own. Along the way, we’ll touch on the ecological role of invasive species and how we can make use of these abundant materials that are often overlooked.
Each day will begin with a walk through the Fibershed property, where we’ll observe and identify plants suitable for fiber and other uses. Along the way, we’ll discuss ethnobotanical uses, sustainable harvesting practices, and what to look for in strong, flexible materials. Back in the workshop space, we’ll examine a variety of dried plant materials — grasses, leafy fibers, woody vines and branches, barks, and roots—and learn how each category behaves and what use it's best suited for.
On
Day 1
[
link
], we’ll get hands-on with invasive grasses and other foraged plants through the essential skill of cordage-making, gaining an understanding of how different fibers behave when twisted together. We’ll then create a soft basket using the coiling technique, where a material is wrapped and stitched around a central core, incorporating your cordage into the design.
On
Day 2
[
link
], we’ll build a basket using the more intricate twining technique, using cordage as the foundational spokes and learning key tips for creating a strong structure. The workshop will feature a demo on making a small hand broom using bundled grasses or other foraged plant materials.
Separate registration is required for both days.
Maximum 10 students.
Participants must bring:
Pruners or sharp scissors, for cutting plant fibers
Towel (one that can get messy)
Any personal snacks, lunch, and beverages. Coffee and tea will be provided.
A notebook and pen for note taking is encouraged.

Jul 12, 2025 (UTC-7)
Point Reyes Station
The
Fibershed Learning Center
is excited to offer
Seelie Studio
's most in-depth urchin dye workshop to date!
For the first time,
Margaret Seelie
, the founder of
Seelie Studio
, will show you the
entire
urchin dye process, beginning with how we source the urchins, process their bodies with care, and create the dye. You’ll have your own dye station where you’ll get to experience this unforgettable natural dye process and dye a silk pillowcase, wool scarf, and small silk squares.
For the first time, Seelie Studio will also have
live urchins
in class for you to touch, hold, and marvel at these magnificent creatures. You’ll learn about our spikey friends with PhD student and urchin extraordinaires
Maddie Armstrong
.
Sea Urchins are incredible creatures. However, due to human impact, their populations have gone unchecked, and they have consumed 95% of the kelp forests in California. In efforts to help the kelp and honor these magnificent animals, we will create beautifully dyed items using urchins from various kelp restoration projects along the West Coast. Join us at the intersection of environmental responsibility and artistic expression.
What’s included:
✴ Personal dye kit station with ingredients for a half-gallon sea urchin dye bath
✴ One silk pillowcase with zipper (14”)
✴ One wool scarf (8x54”)
✴ Two silk squares
✴ One urchin shell (also known as a test)
✴ (optional) You are welcome to bring any silk or wool items from home, like yarn, that you wish to dye. If there is enough dye left over, you’re welcome to use it.
✴ (optional) Bring a jar to take any leftover dye or sludge home with you to keep experimenting.
Note:
Seelie Studio will have urchin dye kit refills available for purchase! Each refill includes enough acid and urchin spine dust to create a ½ gallon dye bath on your own. You will also take home the glass jar we used to create your dye in class.
Maximum 16 students.
Participants must bring:
Any personal snacks, lunch, and beverages. Coffee and tea will be provided.
A notebook and pen for note taking is encouraged.
Appropriate, studio-safe clothing and footwear

The inimitable Kelly McFarling brings us her only West Marin performance of the summer, with very special guests from the national touring circuit, Chris Acker and Kassi Valazza (solo).
Kelly McFarling
grew up riding the prolific RnB radio stations and lady folk waves of Atlanta, GA in the early 90's. This incubation translated to a songwriter anchored in melody, metaphor and potent observation. McFarling began playing original songs in the Bay Area as an adult and quickly became known for her dynamic gut-punch of a live show. She spent the next decade touring and releasing music independently; earning a devoted following as a versatile indie-folk singer-songwriter with spacious and tasty groove. Garnering comparisons to Laura Marling, Bonnie Raitt, and Dottie West, McFarling’s voice anchors into the power of well-crafted songs, delivered with emotion. Her current iteration features a lush band of Bay Area beloveds; Featuring Kelly McFarling (vox, keys, guitar) Andrew Brennan (guitars), Tim Marcus, (pedal steel) Nick Cobbett, (drums) Brittany Powers (vocals, acoustic guitar), and Danny Vitali (bass).
In a genre full of tall tales and marketable lies, New Orleans’
Chris Acker
crafts candid songs – weaving his wit and woes into a body of work that exposes the stale plight of the American Songster to the honest, and sometimes hilarious, light of day. In the tradition of Guthrie and Prine, Chris lends a quavering voice to the half-rotten romance of the unremarkable and unrefined.
Kassi Valazza
grew up between Prescott and Phoenix, Arizona. She penned her first song at age ten but in those early efforts to perform, found herself halted by stage fright of a clinical level. "I've gone to therapy for it," she says, half-laughing. She didn't stop writing music but she let less paralyzing means of expression lead the way, eventually enrolling in arts school for painting, an illustrative instinct that inevitably reveals itself in her vivid songwriting. It wasn't until she relocated to the Pacific Northwest as an adult that Valazza picked back up the proverbial — and actual — guitar.

The Wetlands tells the story of Tara and Nita, two Black femmes on a journey to escape The Wetlands—a liminal space that encompasses various wetlands they have encountered throughout their lives. Tara, a dedicated scientist, meticulously documents the loss of wetlands nationwide, while Nita, an enslaved individual, is trapped on a Louisiana plantation. As the women reflect on their experiences and strive to find unity with The Wetlands, time bends, and they contemplate what lies beyond "the door."
AriDy Nox crafted this evocative piece during their residency at the Mesa Refuge, a prestigious writers' retreat overlooking the Giacomini Wetlands. The staged reading, directed by Lisa Townsend in collaboration with AriDy, features remarkable performances by actors Cassandra Hunter and Kaiy Watts. Following the reading, the audience will have the opportunity to connect with the wetlands themselves by joining the cast for a moonlit stroll along the adjacent trail.
This unique event is made possible through the partnership of organizations such as the Point Reyes National Seashore Association, Mesa Refuge, and the National Park Service. Discovering the Joys of Birding: An Introduction for Beginners | Point Reyes National Seashore Bear Valley Picnic Tables
Apr 19, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
Point Reyes Station
Spring is a great time for many birds at Point Reyes. Coastal estuaries such as Limantour Estero or Bolinas Lagoon are extremely rich feeding areas for thousands of ducks, shorebirds, grebes and other waterbirds.
Many hawks, falcons and other raptors occur in large numbers due to these rich feeding conditions. Warblers, thrushes, kinglets and other landbirds are also found here in huge numbers.
This class will cover the basics of field identification in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. While observing birds in a variety of habitats, this program will offer insights into the use of binoculars, scopes, apps and field guides.
David will share techniques that will enhance your birding skills. Come discover why birding is one of the most popular pastimes in the country, and why Point Reyes is one of the best locations to enjoy it!

Instructor Bio:
Sandy Fisher
has been a professional weaver for over 40 years working with natural fibers, her favorite being linen. In 2012 the importance of producing textiles on a local level was becoming a national movement. Missing in the local textile production in Northern California was linen. Sandy and other community members in Chico began to grow then harvest fiber flax for linen. In 2017 her husband
Durl Van Alstyne
joined the local linen movement when they acquired a small farm to expand their vision. The farm gave them the opportunity to grow fiber flax on a larger scale while practicing Regenerative Agriculture. Harvesting on a larger scale required a need to create small scale mechanical flax processing tools to accommodate their growth. Chico Flax was then created which is now a non profit called
Golden State Linen
to education and encourage flax to linen as a viable industry here in the north state.

Kitka - Summer Solstice Concert | Dance Palace
Jun 13, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
Point Reyes Station
Kitka - Summer Solstice Concert
Friday, June 13 at 7PM
Dance Palace Main Hall
Point Reyes Station
An evening of Balkan, Baltic, Slavic, and Caucasan songs for the Summer Solstice. The women in Kitka are fearless sonic explorers, and you can hear their intrepid spirit in every haunting song. For over four decades, the ten-woman ensemble has developed a vast, breathtaking repertoire of traditional songs from Balkan, Baltic, Caucasus, and Slavic lands, as well as new material composed for the group drawing on those ancient vocal practices. Traveling to rural communities throughout Eastern Europe and the Caucasus, they’ve gathered songs and communed with elders who are often the last links to centuries-old traditions. The ravishing textures of the women’s voices, unearthly cadences, angular rhythms, and unfamiliar languages make Kitka’s performances an enthralling experience.

Robert Macfarlane | Is a River Alive? | Dance Palace
Jun 14, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
Point Reyes Station
Robert Macfarlane returns to Point Reyes to discuss his latest book,
Is a River Alive?
(W.W. Norton).
In order to accommodate as many attendees as possible, we are holding two events on June 15: the first begins at 1pm and the second begins at 6:30pm.
Each ticket purchase includes a signed copy of
Is a River Alive?
(Books that remain unclaimed after July 31, 2025 will be donated.)
About Is a River Alive?
The renowned nature writer and author of the best-selling
Underland
delivers a revelatory book that transforms how we look at the natural world—and life itself.
Hailed as “a naturalist who can unfurl a sentence with the breathless ease of a master angler” (Holly Morris,
New York Times
), Robert Macfarlane brings his glittering style to a profound work of travel writing, reporting, and natural history.
Is a River Alive?
is a joyous exploration into an ancient, urgent idea: that rivers are living beings who should be recognized as such in imagination and law. Macfarlane takes readers on three unforgettable journeys teeming with extraordinary people and places: to the miraculous cloud-forests and mountain streams of Ecuador, to the wounded creeks and lagoons of India, and to the spectacular wild rivers of Canada—imperiled by mining, pollution, and dams. Braiding these journeys is the life story of the fragile chalk stream a mile from Macfarlane’s house, which flows through his own years and days. Powered by Macfarlane’s dazzling prose and lit throughout by other voices,
Is a River Alive?
will open hearts, challenge perspectives, and remind us that our fate flows with that of rivers—and always has.
"This book is itself a river of poetic prose, an invitation to get onboard and float through the rapids of encounters with places and people, the eddies of ideas, to navigate the resurgence of Indigenous worldviews through three extraordinary journeys recounted with a vividness that lifts readers out of themselves and into these waterscapes. Read it for pleasure, read it for illumination, read it for confirmation that our world is changing in wonderful as well as terrible ways." --
