Join us for an evening with award winning writer, broadcaster and journalist Damian Barr as he talks about his new novel, The Two Roberts, reimagining one of the strongest and most passionate love stories of modern British art. 'He will stay like this forever, Robert's arm draped round him. They will be forever twenty.' Scotland, 1933. Bobby MacBryde is on his way. After years grafting at Lees Boot Factory, he's off to the Glasgow School of Art, to his future. On his first day he will meet another Robert, a quiet man with loose dark curls - and never leave his side. Together they will spend every penny and every minute devouring Glasgow - its botanical gardens, the Barras market, a whole hidden city - all the while loving each other behind closed doors. With the world on the brink of war, their unrivalled talent will take them to Paris, Rome, London. They will become stars as the bombs fall, hosting wild parties with the likes of Lucian Freud, Francis Bacon and Elizabeth Smart. But the brightest stars burn fastest. Stunningly reimagined, The Two Roberts is a profoundly moving story of devotion and obsession, art and class. It is a love letter to MacBryde and Colquhoun, the almost-forgotten artists who tried to change the way the world sees - and paid a devastating price. Event Format: Author talk 'in conversation' followed by audience Q&A and book signing Tickets: £10 without book (Admits One, ticket redeemable against a signed copy of The Two Roberts) or £19 with book (Admits One, includes a signed copy of The Two Roberts). Join us at Booka Oswestry on publication day of the most anticipated historical debut of 2025: The Woman in the Wallpaper by Lora Jones. The Miniaturist meets The Yellow Wallpaper in this sumptuous debut novel about three women whose fates collide in a wallpaper factory on the eve of the French Revolution. Are some patterns destined to be repeated? Paris, 1789. The Oberst Factory, which crafts exquisite wallpaper for the most fashionable French homes, is a place shrouded in mystery. Most enigmatic is the woman pictured in each of its prints, rumoured to be the late Mrs Oberst, who died in peculiar circumstances. When sisters Lara and Sofi arrive there for work, they quickly form a friendship with Josef Oberst, the motherless heir to the factory. Whilst Sofi's political fervour intensifies, Lara is disturbed by the uncanny way her life appears mirrored in the wallpaper. Meanwhile Hortense, Josef's spoilt aristocratic wife, is similarly unnerved by the scenes that line the walls of her new home. With the mobs growing ever more violent, is she in danger of meeting the same untimely end as the last Mrs Oberst? As revolution blazes across France, the lives of Sofi, Lara and Hortense are set to collide in unimaginable and irrevocable ways. Can they change what lies ahead, or are some patterns destined to be repeated? After studying English Literature at Durham University, Lora Jones began hercareer working in the TV industry in London, writing factual programme contentand comedy material for the BBC, Channel 4 and others. Join us for an evening with Jake Morris-Campbell, talking about his new book Between the Salt and the Ash: A Journey into the Soul of Northumbria. A writer's quest to understand the deep past and uncertain future of his homeland. After inheriting the miner's safety lamp that belonged to his great-grandfather, Jake Morris-Campbell sets out on a pilgrimage across his homeland. Travelling from the Holy Island of Lindisfarne to Durham Cathedral, he asks what new ways might be made through the old north. This region, a hub of early Christian Britain and later strongly defined by industry and class, now faces an uncertain future. But it remains a unique and starkly beautiful part of the country, with a deep history that is intimately entwined with the idea of Englishness. Jake’s journey along the ‘Camino of the North’ sees him explore the shifting nature of individual and regional identity across thirteen-hundred years of social change. At the same time, it challenges him to reconsider his own calling as a writer and how it relates to the lives of the people he meets along the way. Between the salt and the ash asks what stories the North East can tell about itself in the wake of Christianity and coal. Rejecting the damaging trope of ‘left behind’ communities, Jake uncovers neglected seams of culture and history, while offering a heartfelt celebration of the place he calls hyem. Event Format: Talk, followed by audience Q&A, meet and greet and book signing. Tickets: £10 (admits one, redeemable against signed copy of Between the Salt and the Ash) or £20 (admits one, includes signed copy of Between the Salt and the Ash) Venue: Booka Bookshop, 26-28 Church Street, Oswestry, Shropshire, SY11 2SP Please let us know if you have an accessibility/mobility requirements Refunds: It is our general policy not to refund event tickets unless an event has sold out. Join us for an evening with Clare Leslie Hall as she talks about her highly anticipated new novel Broken Country, an epic love story that asks: what would you risk for a second chance at first love? Everyone in the village said nothing good would come of Gabriel's return. And as Beth looks at the man she loves on trial for murder, she can't help thinking they were right. Beth was seventeen when she first met Gabriel. Over that heady, intense summer, he made her think and feel and see differently. She thought it was the start of her great love story. When Gabriel left to become the person his mother expected him to be, she was broken. It was Frank who picked up the pieces and together they built a home very different from the one she'd imagined with Gabriel. Watching her husband and son, she remembered feeling so sure that, after everything, this was the life she was supposed to be leading. But when Gabriel comes back, all Beth's certainty about who she is and what she wants crumbles. Even after ten years, their connection is instant. She knows it's wrong and she knows people could get hurt. But how can she resist a second chance at first love? A love story with the pulse of a thriller, Broken Country is a heart-pounding novel of impossible choices and devastating consequences. Event Format: Author talk 'in conversation' followed by audience Q&A and a book signing. Tickets: £10 (admits one, redeemable against signed copy of Broken Country) or £17.00 (admits one, includes signed copy of Broken Country) Venue: Booka Bookshop, 26-28 Church Street, Oswestry, Shropshire, SY11 2SP Please let us know if you have an accessibility/mobility requirements Refunds: It is our general policy not to refund event tickets unless an event has sold out. Join us for an evening with renowned social historian Hallie Rubenhold, the award winning and bestselling author of The Five, as she talks about her new book Story of a Murder. In 1910, the name Dr Hawley Harvey Crippen entered legend. The remains of his wife, the music hall performer, Belle Elmore were discovered in his London cellar, while he and his secretary Ethel Le Neve were found masquerading as father and son on a ship bound for Canada. Meanwhile, in New York, the Irish family of Charlotte Bell, Crippen’s first wife were investigating the mysterious circumstances of her death, nearly 20 years earlier. For over a century, Belle Elmore’s murder has been retold as a tale about a cold-blooded killer and the heroic men who brought him to justice, however the real story is one that hasn’t been heard. It is told by the ranks of women who dominated the case, not only the larger-than-life Belle, the rebellious and ambitious Ethel, and the courageous Charlotte, but an army of Edwardian actresses, circus performers, singers, horse trainers, landladies, secretaries, bookkeepers and medical professionals whose version of events has been drowned out by those of law enforcement and even by the murderer himself. Their perspectives paint a chilling picture of an Edwardian world, not so entirely distant from our own. Hallie Rubenhold's expertise lies in revealing stories of previously unknown women and episodes in history, Story of a Murder is a meticulously researched and fascinating reconstruction of the legendary Dr Crippen case. True crime fans, this is an event for you! Event Format: Author talk, followed by audience Q&A and book signing. Tickets: £10 (admits one, redeemable against signed copy of Story of a Murder) or £25.00 (admits one, includes signed copy of Story of a Murder) Please let us know if you have an accessibility/mobility requirements Refunds: It is our general policy not to refund event tickets unless an event has sold out. Join us for an evening with Kate Kemp as she talks about her stand-out debut novel The Grapevine, a gripping and atmospheric murder mystery that exposes the secrets behind closed doors in 1970’s suburban Australia. Australia, 1979. It's the height of summer and on a quiet suburban cul-de-sac a housewife is scrubbing the yellow and white chequered tiles of her bathroom floor. But all is not as it seems. For one thing, it's 3 a.m. For another, she is trying desperately to remove all traces of blood before they stain. Her husband seems remarkably calm, considering their neighbour has just been murdered. As the sun rises on Warrah Place, news of Antonio Marietti's death spreads like wildfire, gossip is exchanged in whispers and suspicion mounts. Twelve-year-old Tammy launches her own investigation, determined to find out what happened, but she is not the only one whose well-meaning efforts uncover more mysteries than they solve. There are secrets behind every closed door in the neighbourhood - and the identity of the murderer is only one of them . . . Richly atmospheric and simmering with tension, The Grapevine is an acutely observed debut novel about prejudice and suspicion, the hidden lives of women, and how the ties that bind a community can also threaten to break it. Kate Kemp won the Stylist Prize for feminist fiction in 2021 and is definitely an author to watch. If you're looking for your next page turning read then this is an event for you! Event Format: Author talk 'in conversation' followed by audience Q&A and book signing Tickets: £10 without book (Admits One, ticket redeemable against a signed copy of The Grapevine) or £19 with book (Admits One, includes a signed copy of The Grapevine).
