Jade Scott: Captive Queen | Blackwell's Bookshop
Nov 7, 2024 (UTC+0)
Edinburgh
We are delighted to be welcoming historian, Dr Jade Scott, along to the shop on Thursday 7th November at 7pm as she discusses her fascinating and revealing new biography of Mary Queen of Scots time in captivity, Captive Queen. For almost two decades before her or execution at Fotheringhay Castle in 1587, Mary, Queen of Scots was a prisoner. From her chambers, she wrote countless letters, many encrypted using complex ciphers to prevent her communications from being intercepted. In this way, she used language to exert her will and her influence, even while incarcerated. More than 400 years after Mary’s death, the discovery of further encoded letters has led to renewed interest in the breadth of her encrypted correspondence in captivity. Professor Dirk Van Hulle: 'Writers’ Libraries' (EDITION Autumn Lecture) | 1.06 Project Room, 50 George Square
Nov 8, 2024 (UTC+0)
Edinburgh
About the eventProfessor of Bibliography and Modern Book History at Oxford University, Dirk Van Hulle, will give the Edition Autumn lecture, titled 'Writers' Libraries'. This lecture will include a discussion, chaired by Dr Hannah Simpson (University of Edinburgh). It will be held in the Project Room 1.06, 50 George Square at 4pm to 5:30pm. The Autumn lecture will be preceded by an optional workshop at the Centre for Research Collections titled 'The Samuel Beckett Digital Manuscript Project', also led by Professor Van Hulle. This will be held at the Centre for Research Collections from 2pm until 3pm. Capacity for this workshop is limited, so please book separately for it and the Autumn lecture below. About the lecture - 'Writers' Libraries'Every writer is also a reader. A work of literature often starts in the margins of another book. Knowing what and how a writer read can help us understand the origins of their work. This lecture considers modernist authors as readers and examines how they read, how their reading translated into their own writings, and how we can map this process in a digital edition. About EditionEdition (formerly the Centre for the History of the Book) is a collaborative initiative at the University of Edinburgh supporting new research in all aspects of the history of the book, from traditional forms of bibliography, codicology and textual editing to the latest theoretical and digital innovations.
