Lecture | Weapons of the Terracotta Army | Royal Armouries Museum

Oct 30, 2024 (UTC+0)
Leeds
Arts
Craft
This lecture will be delivered in person at the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds and online. Speaker: Dr Xiuzhen (Janice) Li, Reasearch Fellow, UCL Archaeologists have discovered a vast array of weapons that equipped the Terracotta Army of China’s First Emperor, Qin Shihuangdi (259-210 BC). While not unusual to find weaponry as part of an ancient burial, archaeologists were stunned to discover all kinds of bronze weapons in real battle formation with the terracotta warriors. In this lecture, join leading researcher Dr Xiuzhen Li as she relates her story of this impressive archaeological feat. The bronze weapons betray the knowledge of early artisans, with some examples even having the name of their maker carved onto the weapons surface. From swords for generals, lances for infantry, crossbows for cavalry, halberds for chariots, and heavy bolts and triggers for crossbowmen, the preservation and discovery of thousands of well-preserved weapons and terracotta warriors provides a rare glimpse into the military strategy, battle formation, and weapon production of early imperial China over 2,000 years ago. Please register for this lecture to be sent a link to access the online presentation. This is a free lecture, please consider making a donation to support our work as guardians of the national collection of arms and armour. Information Source: Royal Armouries | eventbrite

An Evening with Tina Shingler in Leeds | Waterstones Leeds

Oct 2, 2024 (UTC+0)
Leeds
Arts
Literary Arts
We are delighted to have Tina Shingler joining us on the 2nd of October to talk all about her new book Hair Apparent! Hair Apparent is an inspirational ‘hairmoire’ embracing the powerful legacy of Afro hair across seventy years of fashion and culture. It is based on Tina Shingler’s experience of growing up as a Black child in the white space of 1960s rural North Yorkshire and tracks her personal history across the UK, Italy, the US and India. Tina grew up as a Black Barnardo’s child in the 1950s and 1960s and at three years old was ‘boarded out’ to a white foster family. She avoided institutional care, but her foster mother used to chop back Tina’s hair as close to her scalp as possible so that the little girl felt like she was being doubly punished for having such troublesome hair. Today, however, many Black girls are growing up confident in the knowledge that their naturally kinky hair is truly powerful. For them, this bookwill confirm and celebrate what they already know: that out of their scalps springs something so lively, so complex and so extraordinarily versatile that it’s like having an extra gear, not just to their look but to their whole personality. Tina will be in conversation with Dannyella Glasgow and they are sure to have an insightful and interesting conversation! Information Source: Waterstones | eventbrite

A baselard by any other name? | Royal Armouries Museum

Oct 2, 2024 (UTC+0)
Leeds
Arts
Craft
This lecture will be delivered in person at the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds and online. Speaker: Scot Hurst, Assistant Curator of Arms and Armour, Royal Armouries Learn about an unusual and rare baselard short sword in the Royal Armouries collection (object number IX.3482). Uncovered from the River Thames and originally catalogued as English, this lecture explores the sword’s real Swiss origins and its place within the baselard typology. In 1987, archaeologists working on the banks of the River Thames discovered a short sword buried in the mud. Lost in medieval London, it was added to the collection of the Royal Armouries where it was understood to be a 14th or early 15th century English ‘baselard’. However, recent research by Scot Hurst (assistant curator of arms and armour) has brought together weapons held in other European museums, monumental effigies, and artistic descriptions in medieval manuscripts to finally reveal its true origins. In this lecture, Scot will explore the Armouries’ Swiss baselard IX.3482, its history, typology, cultural impact, and appearance in 15th-century Swiss art to determine how we might better clarify the typology and terminology currently applied to such swords. Previous research on this subject has only ever been published in Swiss publications, so Scots insights will bring to light an important exploration of the subject to English speakers. In addition, he will raise the question – how did a Swiss sword end up in the Thames? Image: Diebold Schilling, Spiezer Chronik 5.0. Burgerbibliothek, Bern Please register for this lecture to be sent a link to access the online presentation. This is a free lecture, please consider making a donation to support our work as guardians of the national collection of arms and armour. Information Source: Royal Armouries | eventbrite

We're delighted to have Chloe C. Peñaranda joining us for an event on the 16th of October at 6:30pm. Chloe is USA Today bestselling author of Behind the Broken and is going to be visiting to talk about her new romantasy, The Stars Are Dying! 'The brightest star needs the darkest night.' In a world abandoned by its celestial guardians and left to suffer a tyrant king's reign, all Astraea can recall are the fragmented memories of the past five years. She's determined to discover more about her past, even if that means leaving behind the only safety and security she has ever known by venturing out into a world where bloodthirsty vampires are rumoured to roam. Making her way in an unfamiliar world, she encounters the mysterious Nyte, who makes her an offer she cannot refuse. As Astraea accepts Nyte's help, she is drawn in by his darkness and she begins to wonder if she has struck a deal with one of the ruthless beings her people have always feared. Astraea's opportunity to escape this deal presents itself when she has to decide whether to take her friend's place in centenary celebrations of the Libertatem - a succession of trials hosted by the king in which the five human lands compete for safety against vampires who hunt them down to drink their blood. Is fighting for the safety of her kingdom worth more than answering questions about her past? Grab your tickets now and come hear everything that Chloe has to say about this tale of star-crossed lovers in a world full of magic, mystery, and betrayal! Leeds
Arts
Craft
This lecture will be delivered in person at the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds and online. Speakers: Justin Russell, Archaeologist and Richard Pincott of the Field Detectives The development of rifles and projectiles has been well documented by historians since the mid-19th century. However, in 2017 metal detecting group The Field Detectives unearthed unusually shaped bullets outside the village of Langar (Nottinghamshire) that fail to configure with most modern theories of weapon development. In this lecture, Justin and Richard will embark on a historical journey to uncover the identity of these mysterious objects as they seek to reinstate the bullets into their rightful place in the historic timeline of firearm development. Come along to learn about the cutting-edge research behind these ‘odd balls’, why they have slipped out of history, and how they shed light on a nearly forgotten branch in the development of small arms ammunition. Please register for this lecture to be sent a link to access the online presentation. This is a free lecture, please consider making a donation to support our work as guardians of the national collection of arms and armour. Information Source: Royal Armouries | eventbrite
