Lithuanian pianist Jelena Makarova will offer a solo recital with the title “Autumn Elegie”. With an active interest in promoting the works by women composers, the pianist will perform: Agnieszka Lasko's Nocturne “Autumn” (from 22 Nocturnes for Chopin by women composers), Nadia Boulanger's Trois Petites Pièces Pour Piano (1914); Lili Boulanger's Trois Morceaux Pour Piano alongside Ludwig van Beethoven's Sonata No. 15 in D major, Op.28 (Pastoral); Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis's (1875-1911), Prelude “Autumn” (“Ruduo”), VL.264; Igor Stravinsky's, Sonata (1924) and Sergei Rachmaninoff's, Elegie Op.3 No.1. (Date: 28 September 2024) Short bio: A distinguished graduate of the M.K.Čiurlionis School of Arts (Lithuania), the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Drama (Master's), Jelena also graduated from London’s Royal Academy of Music (PGDip), where she studied piano with Colin Stone. Active participant in a masterclass with French pianist Pierre Laurent-Aimard and performer at György Kurtag’ s Music Festival, where she was also coached by the composer himself, Jelena is particularly noted for promoting new music. She is a co-founding member of the “Living Songs” project, Trio Sonorité, and Chromatikon art/music collective. The ensembles were recently featured on Women's Radio Station as part of the Future Classic Women Awards. Jelena was also a pianist for Errollyn Wallen’ s opera ‘The Paradis Files’, touring the UK as member of the BBC Concert Orchestra ensemble. Other collaborations include the New London Orchestra, National Youth Wind Orchestra of Great Britain, The Belfast Ensemble and Royal Ballet School. Her recording releases include a digital CD in collaboration with the Lithuanian Music Information Centre and Lithuanian National Radio and Television, and the complete piano works by Stewart Lane for the composer’s “Night Letters” album (digital release, March 2024).

People use flags as a symbol of identity: The country you were born in, your town or your favourite team, your personal beliefs... In this workshop we will use colourful fabrics, paint, willow, etc, to explore the representation of our own personal identity through colour, shapes, textures. Make your own flag, and wave it around in a final event that will draw on the theme of the recent Paris Olympics, and also act as a closing celebration of our wonderful Summer of Play at Crystal Palace Park. About the artist: Award winning artist Carlos Cortes has worked successfully since the 80’s in the fields of visual and performing arts. His work has been performed, exhibited and published in museums, galleries and festivals across Europe and the USA. Carlos is interested in the collaboration with all sorts of groups of people. His wide range of experiences in different kinds of community settings is informed by his childhood experiences in a small village: Landscape, architecture and shared rituals and celebrations that bring people together and can have a transformative power. The artist believes that everyone has the potential to be creative. His role is to enable others, to provide a blank canvas where everyone can make a mark and feel included and relevant. These three 60 minute sessions have been programmed to be age appropriate for the following groups: 11:00 - 12:00: Ages 5+ 13:00 - 14:00: Ages 5+ 14:30 - 15:30: Ages 5+ *Under 14’s must be accompanied / observed throughout the session by a responsible adult. We aim to be as inclusive as possible and ask that you let us know if you have any particular requirements at point of booking. Check in opens 15 mins before each session at the Information Centre. On arrival you will be met by one of the instruction team and taken to the session venue the rest of your group. Advance booking required. This is a FREE ADMISSION event. Tickets are limited to two (2) per person. If you are unable to attend please cancel your booking so that other young people can take advantage of the opportunity.

Julie Verhoeven’s eclectic output is extensive across art,
fashion and moving image. Julie's formal training was in fashion and she is primarily known for her fashion illustrations and fashion collaborations with Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs, Versace and most recently, Yours Truly by Peter Jensen. Julie has directed music videos for David Holmes, and Primal Scream and in 2023 published a book of collaborative works, ‘I want your meat and cheese, blood and pie’ with artist Alan Faulds. artist whose illustration style runs through make up, fashion, performance and film to generate immersive environments with families of characters. About Bethlem Gallery events Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult.
