Luna Luna: Forgotten Fantasy | New York

Nov 20, 2024–Jan 21, 2025 (UTC-5)ENDED
New York
Exhibitions
37 years ago, Luna Luna landed in Hamburg, Germany: the world’s first art amusement park, offering rides, games and attractions designed by visionary artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring and David Hockney. In a twist of fate, the park’s treasures were sealed in 44 shipping containers and forgotten in Texas – until now. Luna Luna: Forgotten Fantasy uncovers the story of the world’s most fantastical amusement park. The immersive experience allows audiences to wander through the original rides and take part in the history of Luna Luna and the process of rediscovering and reassembling the works. Guests can marry anyone or anyone in André Heller’s Wedding Chapel, experience David Hockney’s Enchanted Tree, walk through Liechtenstein’s Labyrinth, see themselves and more in Salvador Dalí’s Dalídom. In a nod to the spirit of 1987’s Luna Luna, performers roam the space.

Lauren Fensterstock is an artist living and working in Portland, Maine. Fensterstock received her BFA from Parsons School of Design in 1997 and her MFA from SUNY New Paltz in 2000. Public Event Experience the art, science and beauty of Classical fencing at the Grand Assault of Arms, now in its 21th year; it’s like stepping back into the 19th century. The annual Grand Assault of Arms is a test of skill among classical fencers. Classical fencing predates and is different from the modern form ones sees in the Olympics today. The program includes informative demonstrations as well as spirited bouts with foil, dueling sword, dueling saber & 18th century small-sword. The fencers that you will be observing are the finalists emerging from the preliminaries held on the previous day. The concept of the Grand Assault developed in the early 1870’s during France’s gilded age, La Belle Epoque, and was wildly popular and well attended. It is in this spirit that we host this event at the historic St. Ann & the Holy Trinity Church in Brooklyn.
