BREAKING GROUND | Oxford University Museum of Natural History
Oct 18, 2024–Sep 29, 2025 (UTC)
Oxford
Through the expansive finding of fossils and development of new techniques and methods, the 19th century transformed our understanding of the history of Earth. Breaking Ground explores these themes through William Buckland, geologist and palaeontologist, and Mary Buckland (née Morland), a scientific illustrator, the couple at the heart of this exhibition. They both helped to establish new scientific methods and ideas, which led to fascinating discoveries in palaeontology, including the first ever dinosaur to be named to science.
Kabuki Legends: Part Two | Oxford
Feb 16, 2024–Feb 23, 2025 (UTC)ENDED
Oxford
Japanese artist Takahashi Hiromitsu creates dynamic, colourful prints showing exciting moments in kabuki, a traditional form of dance-drama. This is the second show in a two-part exhibition of his works in Gallery 29.
Hiromitsu’s striking designs are not portraits of actual actors, but visualisations of famous kabuki roles.
In kabuki, performers wearing elaborate costumes and make-up use stylised movement and song to enact melodramatic stories about love, loyalty and the clash between duty and emotion.
The Music of Harry Potter by Mystery Ensemble | Oxford Town Hall
Oct 3, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Oxford
A unique concert will take place in the historic Town Hall in the heart of Oxford. Enjoy the music from the beloved film series based on the eponymous novels by J.K. Rowling. The Harry Potter soundtracks — the most enchanting event of the season for the whole family — promise an experience that cannot be missed! The evening program includes the magical music from the unforgettable Harry Potter fantasy films, performed by the extraordinary Mystery Ensemble. The film’s soundtracks were masterfully composed by John Williams. The composer wrote the music at his mansions in Los Angeles and Tanglewood and then recorded at Abbey Road and Air Lyndhurst studios in London in September 2001. The film features many characteristic leitmotifs, most of which were repeated in the second part of the Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets franchise. The main composition, «Hedwig’s Theme», is present in all films in a modified form. The soundtrack was released on October 30, 2001, on CD media. On December 14, 2001, the soundtrack was certified gold in Canada (50,000 units) and in January 2002 in Japan (100,000 units). In 2002, John Williams was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Music for a Film but lost to Howard Shore, who wrote the compositions for another fantasy film, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. The album became a success, peaking at number 48 on the Billboard 200 and number two on the Top Soundtracks Chart. In the official UK charts, the album was at number 19. Immerse yourself in the world of legendary fantasy and experience the magic of Hogwarts! Duration: 60 minutes (doors will open 45 minutes prior to the scheduled start time and late entry is not permitted) The concert organisers are the creative agency RED EVENTS & Distribution ltd, which makes exceptional cultural events in ancient mansions, on rooftops, in greenhouses and in other most atmospheric venues of Europe, Great Britain, Azerbaijan, Georgia and other countries. About the book: The narrator of this novel is a Norwegian writer living in Milan. A year has passed since the premature death of her Italian husband. She falls in love. M is seventeen years younger than her, but the connection between them is intense and of a kind she has never felt before. Then, as his vulnerability starts showing, so does his troubling rage. She knows this rage. It was always present in her childhood, and it created an all-encompassing fear in her. In Stay with Me, Hanne Ørstavik returns to her theme of love, this time exploring how it can be intertwined with insecurity, fear and violence. How do you recognise love, if fear is the feeling you know? ‘Soul-searching on speed. Ørstavik writes with such distressing courage that as a reader, you become sweaty-palmed. Stay with Me is Hanne Ørstavik at her very best; so intense and profound that the unease becomes contagious . . . Above all, she conveys a spiritual openness that feels naked and vibrantly intense.’ Dagbladet About the author: Hanne Ørstavik is one of the most remarkable and admired authors in Norwegian contemporary literature. Her novel Love was voted one of Norway’s Top Ten books of the last twenty-five years. Her penultimate novel Ti Amo was published in English by And Other Stories in 2022. Now she's running from the one person she had wanted to run to. Kai Azer is now Ilya's Enforcer, loyal to his brother Kitt, the new King. He has vowed to find Paedyn and bring her to justice. Transforming ‘The Metamorphosis’: On the challenges of translating Kafka. | Room 2, Taylor Institution Library, Oxford OX1 3NA
Oct 23, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Oxford
Selected Stories by Franz Kafka presents new renderings of short works by a master of the form. Award-winning translator and scholar Mark Harman offers sensitive English renderings of Franz Kafka’s unique German prose—terse, witty, laden with ambiguities and double meanings. Included are sixteen stories, arranged chronologically to convey a sense of Kafka’s artistic development. Some, like “The Judgment,” “In the Penal Colony,” “A Hunger Artist,” and “The Transformation” (usually, though misleadingly, Harman argues, translated as “The Metamorphosis”), represent the pinnacle of Kafka’s achievement. Although Kafka has frequently been cast as a loner, in part because of his quintessential depictions of modern alienation, he had several close companions. Harman draws on Kafka’s diaries, extensive correspondence, and engagement with early twentieth-century debates about Darwinism, psychoanalysis, and Zionism to construct a rich portrait of Kafka in his world. An in-depth biographical introduction and accompanying annotations highlight the wordplay and cultural allusions of the original German, pregnant with irony and humour often missed by English readers. Join us to hear Mark Harman read from his new translations, after which he, Carolin Duttlinger, and Barry Murnane will be in conversation with Ian Ellison, to explore the challenges and rewards of translating Kafka’s stories and of exploring the personal, literary, and cultural contexts of these multi-faceted stories. If you’ve never read Kafka before or if you already love him, you’ll still want Harman’s Selected Stories.’ Michael Dirda, The Washington Post ‘Richly illustrated and filled with fascinating references to contemporary sources, critical commentary and relevant passages from Kafka’s letters and diaries… Anyone interested in knowing more about these stories will find this volume a treasure trove.’ Karen Leeder, Times Literary Supplement The Discussion Panel Carolin Duttlinger is Professor of German Literature and Culture at the University of Oxford and the Ockenden Fellow in German at Wadham College. She co-directs the Oxford Kafka Research Centre and is the Principal Investigator on the AHRC-funded “Kafka’s Transformative Communities”. She is the author of several books, including Kafka and Photography, The Cambridge Introduction to Franz Kafka, and Attention and Distraction in Modern German Literature, Thought, and Culture. Ian Ellison is the post-doctoral researcher on the AHRC-funded “Kafka’s Transformative Communities” project. He was longlisted for the 2024 Observer Anthony Burgess Prize for Arts Journalism and in 2023 he was shortlisted for the Peirene-Stevns Translation Prize. His first book, Late Europeans and Melancholy Fiction at the Turn of the Millennium appeared in 2022. Mark Harmanis Professor Emeritus of German and English at Elizabethtown College.
