First Birthday Party! Neurodivergent Comedy Night with Lava Elastic | PLATF9RM Brighton - Coworking, Offices & Events

Oct 3, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Brighton and Hove

Comedy
Joyfully Different is turning A WHOLE YEAR OLD on 3rd October, and to celebrate we’re inviting you to join us for a celebratory evening of neurodivergent comedy and fun. Don’t worry though, that doesn’t mean you have to listen to Mark’s questionable jokes all night… we’ve got the professionals in to perform for you! We’re partnering up for the evening with Lava Elastic, the UK's first openly neurodiverse comedy and poetry night. Neurodivergent performers often struggle to get booked, they might struggle to navigate the social codes around dealing with promoters, they may also struggle with organisation, and as a result of all these things there are plenty of talented people out there you simply don't get to see often… Lava Elastic was created to change that! Vive la difference! Lava Elastic was set by late-diagnosed performer and comedy/poetry promoter Sarah Saeed. Sarah got her diagnosis of autism in 2016 and then a diagnosis of ADHD in 2021, and has been performing and running her own performance might for several years so she had plenty of lived experience of these challenges herself. Since starting in 2017 Lava Elastic ran in Brighton for several years and then got Arts Council funding to do a couple of small tours to great responses from theatres in Manchester, Bristol, Kent and Stock-on-Tees amongst others. The event on the 3rd October is a special event especially for the Joyfully Different network. As usual the performers on the evening are brilliant, varied and the nights are always fun! Meet the performersCallum BrazzoCallum is an autistic performance poet, clothing brand Founder (Aut Couture) and TEDx speaker living in Lincolnshire. He aims to empower the autistic and otherwise neurodivergent community and be a bridge between them via his artistic endeavours...and has already been doing a great job of this so far. PaggyThe ‘endearingly eccentric’ Paggy Gacheva is an award-nominated autistic comedian with a high-energy style. Paggy is the creator of Stimmicanto, a 4-star solo show about autistic joy. Her comedy ‘manages to subvert every expectation’ and is described as ‘highly original and clever’. Get ready for a journey through a literal mind where unfiltered joy is strictly encouraged. Georgia ApsionLeicester Comedy Festival 2024 Silver Comedian finalist Georgia Apsion is a stand-up comic and writer, telling big-hearted tales from her life as a reluctant Brighton matriarch, maker of men, late bloomer and late diagnosis. Joel Cooper aka ‘The Porter’The Porter has been schlepping around kitchens forever and has seen many things. The comic creation of Joel Cooper, The Porter is a character based on Joel’s real-life adventures in kitchens. Like the time a Michelin star chef gave him vanilla-flavoured scrambled eggs. Which he called custard. Or the time he worked in two kitchens simultaneously at the place where Strictly Come Dancing is filmed. In 2022 and 2023 The Porter performed in Brighton at Brighton Open Air Theatre, Scratch Meet at The Rosehill, and the ‘Arts Cafe’ scratch nights run by Carousel. Joel Cooper is a comedian who just happens to be autistic, dual-heritage black and Jewish, pansexual and, of course, lives in Brighton. FREE Calisthenics Taster For Beginners In Brighton | Wild Park Calisthenics Park

Oct 12, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED

Sports & Fitness
Exercise
Gravity-defying strength. Impressive skills. Bodyweight mastery.Sounds cool, but where do you get started? You're in the right place - we love introducing people into the world of calisthenics and would be happy to help get you going with our free taster session. What is Calisthenics in a nutshell? In short, calisthenics is a combination of bodyweight exercise such as: PullupsDipsRowsPushupsLeg raises... and gymnastics strength skills like: HandstandsMuscle-upsHuman flagLeversPlancheYou can start working towards all of this and more; we're only just scratching the surface of what calisthenics has to offer, but you'll have to come and see for yourself! Whether you're sold on the impressive skills, simply wish to build some functional strength, or just want to give calisthenics a try, our taster session is a great place to start. I highly recommend Tom and Emma's classes to anyone who wants to work on strength and calisthenics. I didn't have an athletic background and initially thought I wouldn't be able to build strength or calisthenics skills. Tom and Emma are both extremely knowledgeable, and have given me really comprehensive advice. That combined with their encouragement has got me from struggling to hang on a bar to full pull-ups which was hugely satisfying for me.Henrietta Klein ★★★★★ During our 1 hour taster session, you will practice:Key beginner calisthenics skills We will help you to explore movement, coordination and stability by introducing you to the gymnastics rings along with some basic inversion drills (upside down stuff!) on the floor. Fundamental bodyweight exercises We will show you how to build functional, powerful strength that will set you up for success in calisthenics and, in the long term, reward you with incredible health benefits. Conditioning drills We will also include strengthening for some smaller areas of the body that are often overlooked but are equally as important to work on, both for calisthenics purposes and your overall health. Targeted stretching We will finish off by stretching common areas of stiffness which, when practiced regularly, will help to improve your movement and avoid pain or injury. Who is it for?Our taster session is designed for beginners, whether you're an absolute beginner who has never tried calisthenics before, or you've given it a go but aren't well practiced. Everything we work on during the session can be adapted to your ability and fitness level. Please note: our taster sessions are only for those who've not worked with us before. If you already have, please allow others the opportunity to join our taster instead, or better yet recommend it to someone you know! Where is it?This taster session will take place at Wild Park Calisthenics Gym, a well equipped outdoor gym on the outskirts of Brighton towards Stanmer Park. Free car parking is available at Wild Park main entrance. Make sure to search 'Wild Park Calisthenics Park' on Google Maps otherwise you'll go to the wrong place! Please note: the Wild Park toilets are often closed so there is usually no access to toilets or water! Who are we?We're Tom and Emma, the couple behind Calisthenics Brighton and huge enthuesiasts for calisthenics, movement and fitness. We offer calisthenics classes and coaching in Brighton, both indoors and outdoors with our main location at FMG Gym in the North Laines. Our mission is to build a calisthenics community accessible to anybody, working together and encouraging each other towards quality movement and inspiring feats of strength alike in a fun, positive environment. You can find our more about us on our website, or see us in action on our Instagram. Coaching was simply the best I have experienced. Tom and Emma are incredibly knowledgeable, experienced and supportive. I always felt safe knowing I am getting the best possible advice and guidance that I can trust. The classes were really well structured, professionally led, and always fun and enjoyable. A truly inclusive space. No matter if beginner or advanced – everyone’s unique abilities were acknowledged, whilst also challenged just the right amount. I left every class feeling like a better and stronger version of myself. Long story short, I couldn’t recommend enough – and based on my own experience, I'm confident that wherever you are on your calisthenics/handstands/fitness journey, joining this community is bound to take you further than you ever imagined possible.Triin Schneider ★★★★★ Information Source: Calisthenics Brighton | eventbrite

The homemade dumplings, chapatis, tortillas, stew, breads and chutneys. The artisan made guitars, drums and other musical instruments. Rugs, tapestry, beaded work, stained glass... Sean Wai Keung adds: “Handmade to me means human-touched, person-specific and one-of-a-kind. That could be something as intricate as a wood-carving or as in-the-moment as a slice of toast, something destined for the privacy and comfort of ourselves or for the giving love and kinship of others. It is embracing imperfections, experimentations and mistakes as part of the process and collaborating with nature on structure, form or content.” Covert Literary Magazine is supported by Arts Council England. Where better to write than a bookshop with a cafe? When better than at 5am? Join other local writers from 5am on the first Wednesday of every month to work on your work in progress. Coffee, tea and pastries available to kickstart your writing morning. We'll open the shop at 5am and you're welcome to join us then, or at anytime after that - and leave whenever you need to. The shop opens to the general public at 9am but if you're in full flow, you're free to stay as long as you like. Tickets are limited to 20 as we only have so many chairs and table space. While the majority of writers sit upstairs in the cafe, we also have chairs and tables on the ground floor and in the cosy basement, so feel free to spread yourself about throughout the bookshop - wherever you feel comfortable. Tickets cost £5 and include a hot or cold drink. You can buy other drinks to keep you going during the morning. The local bakery usually delivers our pastries at about 7am to give you that extra energy boost. This is a silent write session - there's no workshopping, just the motivation of being around other writers as the sun comes up. Why do we do this? Author and bookshop manager Cathy Hayward has regularly risen at 5am to write and she wondered if other local writers did the same. We started the 5am Writing Club in the bookshop as a trial on the Summer Solstice 2023. They've proved popular so they're now a monthly fixture and we'll keep running them as long as people keep turning up.
