Abbey Fringe Festival: Art, Design & Visual Effects | The Abbey School
Sep 23, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Reading
Come along to the Abbey Fringe Festival’s opening event featuring leading figures in the world of Art and Design. Enjoy a fun workshop with Konrad Weltz on sound and visual effects as well as listening to three industry experts in interior design, architecture and branding & design. Come prepared with any burning questions you would like to ask. Please make us aware if light sensitivity is an issue. Two of our industry experts share their story below: Pippa Nordberg: Branding and Design Pippa is a strategy lead working in the world of design and branding. After completing A Levels in French, Spanish, German & English at The Abbey, she went on to study Modern Languages at Bristol University. She now helps shape how the multimillion pound brands we interact with every day – from laundry detergents to breakfast cereals to beauty products (known collectively as fast-moving consumer goods) show up in our lives. What they look like, what they’re called, how they talk to us, what products and services they offer us. Pippa works with brand owners and creative teams to define the vision and shape the execution in a job that is sometimes stressful but never boring. Anne Owen: Architect Anne is an architect and runs her own practice in Berkshire - Anne Owen Architects Limited. It was her ambition to become an architect from about Year 7, after a visit to the stately home at Clivedon. She has been fascinated by the design and function of residential buildings, both large and small, ever since. Anne studied A levels in Maths, French and Economics unfortunately she couldn’t fit A level Art into her timetable. Anne therefore created her own portfolio with the support of the Art department. She accepted a place to study Architecture at Manchester University from 1989 to 1994 and in 1996 completed the practical element of her second degree at a Berkshire practice. Anna continued to work for several years as a qualified architect at this practice before establishing her own practice in 2005. Anne believes that exceptional, beautiful and functional building design is for everyone and creates positive and ingenious architectural solutions for the smallest to the biggest homes. Anne Owen Architects Limited specialise in residential architecture, both new builds and renovating existing properties.

Haroon Siddiqui: My Name is not Harry | Jack Rabinovitch Reading Room - Toronto Reference Library
Sep 26, 2024 (UTC-5)ENDED
Reading
Veteran Toronto Star editor Haroon Siddiqui, brown and Muslim, has spent a life on the media front lines, covering conflicts both global and local, and tracked rising xenophobia. In his recently released memoir, My Name is not Harry, Siddiqui traces his journey from India to Canada; And his extraordinary career that took him from warzones to the corridors of power in Canada. Upon arriving in Canada in the late 1960s, Siddiqui did what many newly arrived immigrants would not dare do - he refused to change who he was. It was this unabashed self-confidence and sense of dignity that made him a champion of multiculturalism and a pioneer of cross-cultural journalism. And as the world started to become increasingly Anti-Muslim after 9/11, Siddiqui was one of the first Canadian journalists to interrogate the real motivations behind the war on terror . Q&A and book signing to follow. Books available for purchase. Ticket registration for this event is required: Free tickets for this event are available to book via Eventbrite.
