La Grange Park

Lecture #3: Between Two Fires: America in the War of 1812 As a global war raged between Napoleonic France and Great Britain, the fledging United States found itself caught in the middle of the maelstrom. Insulted by both sides and forced to carefully tread its own path, American internal political interests clashed as well, eventually leading to a declaration of war against its former colonial overlord. Begun with towering confidence and far too much bravado, the War of 1812 quickly humbled the United States; a string of disastrous campaigns culminated with the burning of the capital in 1814. Examining these campaigns as well as the leaders on both sides of the Atlantic will place the war in its international context, why defeat did not engender disgrace, and how the United States emerged from the war more assured of its future than ever before. All lectures take place at the Rob Morris Chapel, 207 W. Jefferson on the Oldham County History Center campus. $35 per person, includes dinner. Programs are from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Limited seating. Featuring over 20 of the oldest and newest breweries as well as some of the most awarded and accoladed in the state, Texas History on Tap has something for everyone to enjoy. A Taste of Texas: Tutored Tasting Add-On with beer writer Ruvani de Silva Texas's rich beer history has strong links to 19th-century German immigration and the cultural and culinary traditions these new Americans brought with them. Brewers like Heinrich Kreische brought German brewing techniques and beer styles to Texas, offering thirsty German immigrants a taste of home and introducing other settlers to German beer culture. German beer styles remain hugely popular in Texas to this day, and since brewers respond to their environment and its available ingredients, many of our German-style beers have distinctly Texan qualities. This add-on gives you access to an exclusive, guided tasting of Texas-German craft beers featured in the Texas History on Tap beer garden. In this talk, Michael Jackson Beer Writer of the Year, Ruvani de Silva, will give attendees an introduction to Texas-German beer history and a tutored tasting of 4 local Texas-German craft beers, some of which have been brewed specifically for this event. Attendees will learn how tasting beer like a beer sommelier can improve the drinking experience by detecting the different aromas and flavors and the key style characteristics.
