Cultural Experiences
Autumn Brushmaking Workshop with Ellie Birkhead A keyboard brush? A beard brush? A crumb brush? During this workshop Ellie will pass on the skills learnt from one of England’s last brushmakers for you to make your very own brushes for the home. Ellie will teach an age old brush binding technique before giving you the opportunity to get creative with making your own designs. You will be introduced to the pillar drill and learn simple woodworking techniques to be able to craft your own handle, as well as having the chance to experiment with a mixture of bristle materials, from old fishing nets to natural fibres. We'll be taking our time to explore the farm and embracing the change in seasons whilst discussing natural materials and connection to place. Delicious Yallah coffee brewed right on the farm and homemade cake will keep us fuelled throughout the session. No experience required - just bring your creativity and curiosity. ____ “I attended one of Ellie’s winter brush-making classes and had a fantastic time. As a maker, I wanted to try something new, and this class was the perfect introduction to brush-making. Ellie was both knowledgeable and supportive, answering questions and offering guidance throughout. I’m excited to make more brushes and look forward to taking another of Ellie’s classes soon!” – Fern Toynton, Nov 24 "What a really engaging workshop! Ellie took the time to put brush making in UK historic context, along with books and examples, which was actually as useful a take away as the brush making itself as it allowed research into different techniques and materials after the workshop. The brush making workshop itself was well explained, lots of fun and the group all made a selection of different designs under Ellies clear guidance. I personally, and a few others from the group that I know, have made brushes since the workshop - the ultimate compliment to a tutor - if people carry on afterwords." – David White (@thewhittlings), Oct 24. About Ellie Ellie Birkhead is a designer, maker and facilitator who uses the power of craft and creativity to bring about social change. Ellie is passionate about passing on hand skills to people of all ages to build confidence and a deeper understanding and appreciation for natural materials and crafted objects. Ellie’s broad background in making spans from creating props for film and tv, designing for the luxury craft sector, through to facilitating family workshops - but the thread that runs through it all is a love for making, for conversation and connection across the workbench, and a desire to be surrounded by thoughtfully made objects. Paul Murphy spent almost eleven years as an Assistant District Attorney, supervising several of Massachusetts’s busiest courthouses, before building a reputation as a noted criminal-defense trial attorney. The unexpected twist to this story is that, for nine of those years, under the pseudonym of Paul D’Angelo, Paul was simultaneously becoming one of the nation’s top standup comedians. Combining an energetic, charismatic stage presence and spontaneous improvisational talent with an endless array of intelligent humor delivered in an animated style that grabs and holds the attention of crowds everywhere he performs, Paul’s constantly evolving and diverse selection of original material “takes normal everyday experiences and makes them sound absolutely hilarious.” Critics further write that “(Paul D’Angelo) is an energetic performer who gives a peak performance at every show.” “His quick comedic mind,” “unique observations” and “down to earth, stop-and-think humor” “keeps the crowd in hysterics." Paul will be joined by fellow comedian Mitch Stinson and host Mike Hanley. Get your ticket before they sell out! To buy tickets, click the button for tickets. Slavery and Abolitionism on Cape Cod, June 11, 2025 at 4pm From the era of the Puritans right through to the end of the Revolutionary War, Boston was a central hub for the slave trade. Slaves were brought on board ships from the African coast with regularity, often mastered by Cape Cod Sea captains. The number of slaves per household was much smaller in the Northeast as compared to the South, yet nonetheless, a much-needed labor force was desired, reaching its zenith when our nation first officially started. After Massachusetts legally prohibited its practice in 1780, sea captains became engaged in a variety of ways within its continuance. There were some captains who brought them in surreptitiously, while others enhanced the slave market in other indirect ways. Polarizing lines were drawn up. The commonwealth’s maritime industry became quite divided with some fighting for the cause of abolitionism while other captains wished only to witness a very slow demise of this profitable endeavor. The book discusses religious views, political platforms, economic factors, and social movements that existed during the pre-Civil War period. We gain an insight into the thinking of the day. Sharing several profiles of notable Black slaves living in Massachusetts demonstrates the enormous contributions made to the overall growth of our country. $20 Non-Members/ $10 Members, or donation based ticket. Light refreshments served. Information Source: Falmouth Museums on the Green | eventbrite

The HNC/FdSc Professional Superyacht Engineer course is a new, pioneering 3-year course at Falmouth Marine School. Developed after feedback and close collaboration with the industry, it represents a hybrid approach based on traditional marine engineering expertise, combined with a strong focus on the current and future skills needed to support the technological and sustainable development of the sector. Come along to our Taster Event at Falmouth Marine School to chat to the experts and view our amazing facilities to help decide if this programme is an ideal fit for you! Further info about the course: The event will focus upon a career route into the Super Yacht industry and will require learners to commence an 18-month period of study in Falmouth Marine School to complete a Foundation Degree in marine engineering related study. Learners will also spend 16 weeks during this study period undergoing sea-going training with our commercial partner (Turn to Starboard) to complete the commercial qualifications required to enter in to employment. To achieve the necessary qualifications learners will be timetabled to attend five days per week over the 18-month program with the usual breaks during the Easter, Summer, Christmas and half term periods. Charges for the Foundation degree program would normally be funded as for all other Higher Education programs, fees for the 2 academic years of the program are currently set at £9250/ academic year, however this is subject to any changes as made by the government. Applicants will be requested to attend an interview prior to making the usual application through UCAS. There is an additional cost for the commercial qualifications and more details of this will be made available during the event; this cost will need to be funded by the individual. The college application and interview processes focus upon those learners who are most likely to achieve employment within this industry and whilst there is no age limit upon application, our research indicates that the industry prefers to take application from those who fall within the 18 to 30 age group. This may be stretched to an upper age limit of 35 for those that can offer a wide range of engineering skills. The college would suggest for those applicants who fall outside of this age group, that there are other ways of applying to commence a career within this sector and are happy to advise. Twins Sebastian and Viola are separated from one another by sea and storm. Shipwrecked and without her brother for the firsttime, Viola finds herself washed up in Illyria, a playground for the hedonistic and lovesick elite. What unravels next sends the story spinning into a web of unrequited love, mistaken identities, hilarious awkwardness, cruelty, and mischief. Miracle Theatre delivers a bold, fresh, accessible take on Shakespeare’s comedy, blending their playful spirit with the Bard’s wit. Expect plenty of belly laughs, heart ache, gloriously outrageous characters, and a contemporary twist where chance, disguise, and sheer madness prove that connection transcends appearances, and the heart wants what it wants! This Uproarious production boasts Miracle’s signature high energy, sharp dialogueand memorable comic moments/characters, designed to give audiences plenty to talk and laugh about. To read more about Miracle Theatre click on the link below: Miracle Theatre Please read this important information about events at Trebah: Doors will open 1 hour before the performance to allow time for you to explore the garden, have a picnic or just leisurely make your way to the amphitheatre to take your seat. Doors will close 15 minutes after the start time of the performance. This event takes place in our open-air amphitheatre and we are used to the Cornish weather! Outdoor events will only be cancelled in extreme weather conditions, so please bring a coat! Please allow 20 minutes before the performance starts to walk to the amphitheatre. With tiered seating and plenty of leg room, there’s no need to bring your own chairs (but a cushion is a good idea). Please be aware, that seating is unreserved. A number of cushioned seats with back supports are available at the amphitheatre on a first-come-first-served basis. For large parties and groups, please arrive in plenty of time if you would like seats together. Due to the topography of the garden there is limited access to the amphitheatre, which may not be suitable for all types of mobility vehicles. We will do everything we can to make sure you can see the show but please call us on 01326 252205 before booking to discuss. For accessibility/carer tickets, please call us on 01326252205. Our only toilets are within the Visitor Centre at the top of the garden. Although many of our paths are lit, it is advisable to bring a torch with you. Free parking is available for all events. This annual award celebrates individuals whose dedication and contributions have made a lasting impact on the preservation and enrichment of Falmouth’s history and community life. Jim Lloyd’s commitment to civic and cultural life in Falmouth spans decades. From leading trolley tours through the town’s maritime past to serving as treasurer for numerous nonprofits—from Salt Pond Areas Bird Sanctuaries to the Friends of Fairwinds—Jim has been a constant champion of the causes that make our community strong. His long-standing support of the Historical Society, alongside his late wife Caroline, has included everything from gift shop stewardship to educational programming and strategic leadership. The evening will include a catered reception with libations, live musical performances by local youth string musicians, and a special self-guided candlelight tour of the c.1790 Dr. Francis Wicks House Museum. The tour pays tribute to the “Fix the Wicks” campaign —a restoration initiative close to Jim’s heart.
