How have the works of Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) survived through the ages? This exhibition focuses on "Family Treasures of Art Passed Down Through Generations." Van Gogh's brother, Theo, who supported his artistic career and preserved most of his works, sadly passed away six months after his brother's passing. Since then, Theo's wife, Jo, has taken on the responsibility of managing his vast collection. She dedicated her life to enhancing her brother's reputation, promoting exhibitions of his works, facilitating sales, and compiling and publishing over a thousand of Van Gogh's letters. To prevent the dispersal of his collection, Jo's son, Vincent Willem, established the Vincent van Gogh Foundation and dedicated himself to the construction of the museum. The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam houses approximately 200 of Van Gogh's paintings, over 500 drawings, as well as precious relics such as letters, related works, and ukiyo-e prints. Ninety percent of these works were permanently loaned by the Van Gogh Foundation upon its opening in 1973. This exhibition focuses on the collection of the Van Gogh Museum, presenting not only more than 30 works by Van Gogh, but also four exhibits such as Van Gogh's letters that are shown to the public in Japan for the first time, unveiling a moving chapter of "family protection and inheritance of art" for the audience.
