Displaced Nostalgia: Not So Personal (2025) | WMA Space

Centre
Displaced Nostalgia: Not So Personal The contemporary overflow of information prioritises the immediate over analysis or mediation, leading to a life that lacks reflection and focus. Amidst the dynamic bustle of March’s cultural events, can we carve out a space where audience can breathe, and immerse themselves in contemplation? WMA invites artist Jeemin Kim and novelist Shueng-King Aaron Tang, who has lived in multiple locations, to present a durational performance titled “Displaced Nostalgia: Not So Personal,” interpreting and responding to Anson Mak’s “No Such Person.” Over the course of seven hours, the performance invites audiences to surrender their devices and wander freely in a realm where time and space blur. With a fresh perspective, they can attune themselves to the fluidity of time and ponder the intricate connections between displacement and the notion of home. As Kim rearranges and projects household objects, Tang responds through the act of writing, inviting participants to immerse themselves in a shared experience that is both deeply personal and collectively resonant. *Over the course of the performance, which lasts for 7 hours, registered audiences are free to enter or leave the space at any point. JeeMin Kim (b.1993) is a painting and installation artist whose practice interrogates the ways in which history and mythology are constructed, challenging dominant narratives. Balancing in Freedom: A Performance Event (trials)Written and performed by Iddo OberskiCreative mentor and dramaturg: Mark KyddYou are invited to witness a trial performance of this new theatre piece. The event will last about 70 minutes and there will be some time afterwards for those who can and want to stay, to discuss the piece, provide feedback and ask questions. Iddo: I'm making this performance piece Svjetlana. It explores human freedom. Would you like to be part of it? Svjetlana: Absolutely yes, Iddo, of course. What did you think? Iddo: Great. Here's the script Svjetlana: Thanks Iddo. I really don't want to memorize lines though. Can I improvise? Iddo: Yes OK, if that's what you want Svjetlana: It is! Balancing in Freedom is a journey through the landscape of personal story, searching for meaning, connection and expression. In this unique blending of multiple art forms, Iddo Oberski takes us on a deeply personal exploration of his family’s Holocaust history, his own disability and Rudolf Steiner’s Philosophy of Freedom. In regular dialogue with his larger-than-life collaborator Svjetlana, Iddo is shown gently how such diverse and challenging experiences may never be fully understood. They shape us and through creating art we may come closer to making some sense of ourselves, human life and the world we live in. Written and performed by Iddo Oberski with Creative Mentoring from Mark Kydd.Balancing in Freedom draws on a range of forms of expression to share a deeply personal story of disability, persecution and freedom. It includes spoken word, movement, poetry, visual art, eurythmy, magic, song, puppetry. The writing of the script and staging of these shows are funded by Creative Scotland. This is a ticketed event and prior booking is required. Please do not turn up without having booked. Donations at booking are very welcome and will be passed on to the Salisbury Centre.
