Join artists Sebastian Schmieg and Lina Schwarzenberg for an introduction to “fixing” images with artificial intelligence and a playful exploration of the limits of AI. Learn more about Schmieg and Schwarzenberg’s practice, their approach to using AI systems, all whilst “repairing” images of Dundee. Featured images will be captured on a city photo walk, led by Abertay University’s Dr Martin Zeilinger and co-developed with Schmieg and Schwarzenberg. Participants are encouraged to attend both the photo walk and the workshop. Please note, a personal computer and Adobe Photoshop 2024 version 25.11 is required to participate. The invention of photography has transformed the world. Today, photographic images are everywhere and the acts of taking, sharing and responding to them are integral to daily life. The explosion of photographic experimentation in the mid-19th century coincided with the rapid growth of cities across the globe. This exhibition brings together iconic images from the V&A’s collections as well as works by contemporary photographers, architects and digital artists to explore how photography and cities have influenced each other. See two groundbreaking commissions created exclusively for the exhibition: Diorama Map, Dundee by photographer Sohei Nishino is a large-scale photographic map of Dundee offering a captivating and intricate portrait of the city, through the eyes of the photographer.The second, Gimbal City, is a collaborative video game by architectural design studio, iheartblob, designed to empower communities to shape and own their urban stories.

An evening panel discussion, closing out Designer Day. “Design is the ultimate expression of culture” says Gabriella Bennett. “The places we move through, the meals we eat, the homes we inhabit: all have hidden within them a design code full of meaning. In each case, design tells us so much about the country we are in, its national identity and how its people interact.” Join the award-winning writer and journalist to explore how design is encoded by different cultures internationally with a special line-up of guests, including designers Jennifer Gray and Adam Johnston, and writer and journalist Eilidh Akilade.
