Sep 20, 2024 (UTC-5)ENDED
Spring
Amanda Martínez & Kevin Laliberte will be presenting a special intimate night at Neruda Arts Studio. Described by World Music Central as “one of the great new voices in Spanish language Latin music,” Amanda Martinez has been embraced by audiences all over the world. Born to a Mexican father and South African Jewish mother, Martinez brings a unique cultural blend to her music. Amanda Martinez is a Canadian singer-songwriter whose music is an original blend of influences from her Mexican and South African roots. Amanda credits her longtime band for being a huge support to her career. “They are world class musicians who I feel lucky to play with. Each one contributes to our overall sound.” Her band features her long time guitarist and now-producer Kevin Laliberté, husband/bassist Drew Birston, and Cuban Canadians Rosendo “Chendy” Leon (percussion), Alexander Brown (trumpet), Osvaldo Rodriguez (violin) and Pablosky Rosales (tres). She often tours with Mexican bassist Paco Luviano. She has released four albums and her latest recording Libre is her most eclectic creation to date. Her songs have been selected for four Putumayo world music collections. Career highlights include headlining the Blue Note jazz club in NYC, the FIFA World Cup in South Africa and the Pan American Games in Mexico and Canada. She has also been a guest recording and touring artist of award winning guitarist Jesse Cook. She has sold out Toronto’s Koerner Hall multiple times and Ottawa’s National Arts Centre and Winter Garden Theatre. Amanda recently release the album Recuerdo – which can be translated as “I Remember” in English – is Martinez’s response to the recent passing of her father Gustavo, from whom she inherited her love of music and zest for life. Gustavo arrived in Canada in 1956, riding his bicycle all the way to Toronto from Mexico City in 83 days. He landed in Canada speaking no English, but still managed to graduate at the top of his engineering class at the University of Toronto at age 30.

ENDGAME by Samuel Beckett: A Green Room Performance by Cambrian Players | Cambrian Players
Sep 28, 2024 (UTC-5)ENDED
Spring
An absurdist one-act tragicomedy, presented as a staged reading as part of Ontario Culture Days. Cambrian Players presents our first Green Room production of our 75th season – Endgame by Samuel Beckett, directed by Jenn McCallion. Our Green Room shows are presented as staged readings, bringing a unique authenticity as our actors take to the stage with scripts in hand. With only three or four rehearsals prior to hitting the stage, these shows deliver a spontaneous experience for both the performers and the audience. Join us on Saturday, September 28 for Endgame, an absurdist one-act play about a blind, domineering elderly man, his parents who live in trash cans, and his people-pleasing assistant in an abandoned house in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Equal parts horrific and beautiful, this witty and wry minimalist purgatory story provides plenty of unconventional laughs alongside its darkness, as what is there left for one to do but to laugh when you find yourself waiting in the face of oblivion, and you find the waiting awfully boring. DOORS OPEN AT 7:00pm • SHOW STARTS 7:30pm Tickets for this performance are Pay What You May – choose the ticket price that works best for you. Tickets can be purchased online in advance or at the door with cash or card. All proceeds benefit Cambrian Players’ Spotlight on Inclusivity Campaign, with the goal of making Theatre for the Love of It accessible to all. Stick around after the show for a Q&A with the local cast! This show is produced in special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service.
