Eclipse Mobile Disco 1st Birthday Extravaganza | 231 Oxford St
Sep 14–Sep 15, 2024 (UTC+10)ENDED
Oxford
Well can you believe it's been a year since Mr Mobile Disco and the crew caused a ruckus in the old Lucky Cat back courtyard?!It's time for a partayyy!! 🥳 We're celebrating in style with our BIGGEST one yet, boogying our way down to Two 3 One Sydney. As a 'Mobile' 'Disco' we constantly experiment with not only venues but genres, and this is going to be by far our most underground night yet, with all the fun and energy that the previous Mobile Discos have brought. The multi-level venue has just recently reopened in 2024 and we're going to be one of the first to leave our stain in it with music running right through the night from 9pm all the way til close at 5am! Headling the night we have Sydney heavyweight PARKER! Emerging from Greater Manchester, PARKER quickly made a mark in the underground scene with his unique blend of heavy bass, captivating grooves, and dynamic drums. Now a dominant figure in Australia’s underground scene, especially in Sydney, his intuitive approach to music has garnered him widespread respect. Partnering with major names like S*A*S*H, performing at Ultra Music Festival, and collaborating with UK’s Do Not Sleep label, his recent venture PARKER & FRIENDS has always guaranteed a full house, and now it's time for his Mobile Disco debut! But first up we have local favourite CASSETTE whose infectious personality and creative sets continue to prove her reputation. Strong support from renowned Sydney collectives S*A*S*H, Return to Rio, Tabularasa, and of course her own brand BODYWORK ensure she is always busy a permanent fixture on the local scene. Groovy rolling bass lines, minimal, acid and 90s house can all be heard in Cassette's sets and productions, and we can't wait to see what set she puts together for the Mobile Disco. Support on the night will come from a mix of the usuals and a couple more Eclipse debuts, spread across two floors you'll see (A-Z) Andrs, Rreilly, T-Bag, Searching4Benny, Seb Bliss, Simple Pleasures, Sucram b2b Ash & a couple more maybe TBA. IF you've been to any of our events over the last 12 months keep an eye out in your email inbox because we've sent you an exclusive invite for 50% off tickets for the first 48 hours after they launch as a thank you for helping us get to this point. So get one quick else you'll be in the queue with all those who haven't popped their Mobile Disco cherry yet!

For this very special evening, ticket price also includes pre-order of an exclusive signed copy of 'Onyx Storm' to be sent out on publication day: 21 January 2025. (Please note, pre-orders of signed copies are limited to one per ticket and are only available to customers with a UK shipping address). Rebecca Yarros Rebecca Yarros is an author best known for the Empyrean fantasy book series (due to be adapted into a television series with Amazon). The first book in the series, Fourth Wing, was published to huge acclaim in May 2023 and quickly went on to become a #1Sunday Times, New York Times and global bestseller. The sequel, Iron Flame, became the fastest selling pre-order title in a single day on the Waterstones website with their special edition selling out in just a few hours ahead of its November 2023 release. Fourth Wing Violet Sorrengail expected to live a quiet life surrounded by books, until she was forced onto the world's deadliest training ground. Now she must fight to join the army's elite: dragon riders. But dragons don't choose fragile riders, they incinerate them, and when your body breaks as easily as Violet's does – death is only a heartbeat away.
Many cadets would kill Violet to better their own chances of success; the rest would kill her just because of her last name . . . including the ruthless Xaden Riorson, her family's greatest enemy. With the odds stacked against her, Violet must use every edge her wits can give her just to see the next sunrise, because once you enter Basgiath War College, there are only two ways out: GRADUATE OR DIE Iron Flame Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College, Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky.
Now the real training begins, and Violet's already wondering how she'll get through. It's not just that it's gruelling and maliciously brutal, or even that it's designed to stretch the riders' capacity for pain beyond endurance. It's the new vice commandant, who's made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is – unless she betrays the man she loves.
Although Violet's body might be weaker and frailer than everyone else's, she still has her wits, and a will of iron. And leadership is forgetting the most important lesson Basgiath has taught her: Dragon riders make their own rules.
But a determination to survive won't be enough this year. Because Violet knows the real secret hidden for centuries at Basgiath War College – and nothing, not even dragon fire, may be enough to save them in the end. Onyx Storm UK publication date: 21 January 2025 Natasha Pulley Natasha Pulley is the author of international bestseller, The Watchmaker of Filigree Street which won a Betty Trask Award and was shortlisted for the Author’s Club Best First Novel Award, the Locus Awards. It remained on the Sunday Times bestseller list for much of summer 2016. Fun and Physical Activity in Middle Age | Botanic
Sep 10, 2024 (UTC+12)ENDED
Oxford
Talk DescriptionMiddle age can be a complicated and structured time of life making physical activity challenging for some. Traditional sports can require too much time commitment, and fitness memberships are often expensive. Meanwhile, ‘get fit’ messaging centres on a robotic, unwavering dedication where ‘no pain, no gain’ or similar slogans dominate. We could ask, quite reasonably, where is the focus on fun and enjoyment? This talk will focus on finding fun in physical activity, and connecting with your children through physical activity, particularly in places where middle age participation could be seen as unique. BioDr Nick Maitland is a Lecturer at the University of Canterbury, and specialises in sociology of sport and sport marketing. He is interested in the motivation and practice of physical activity in middle-aged participants, especially in activities that are more normally associated with younger people. Much of this interest comes from being an older participant in skateboarding and snowboarding and gaining an understanding into the barriers towards engagement.

Nile Green 'Empire's Son, Empire's Orphan' with Fitzroy Morrissey | Blackwell's Bookshop
Sep 25, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Oxford
Empire's Son, Empire's Orphan Claiming to come from Afghanistan, Ikbal and Idries Shah convinced spies, poets, orientalists, diplomats, occultists, hippies and even a prime minister that they held the keys to understanding the Muslim world. Gambling with the currency of cultural authenticity, father and son became master players of the great game of empire and its aftermath as their careers extended from colonial India and wartime Oxford to swinging London and literary New York. Empire's Son, Empire's Orphan unravels a quagmire of aliases and pseudonyms, fantastical pasts and self-aggrandising anecdotes, high stakes and bold schemes that painted the defining portrait of Afghanistan for almost a century. From George Orwell directing Muslim propaganda to Robert Graves translating a fake manuscript of Omar Khayyam and Doris Lessing supporting jihad, Nile Green tells the fascinating tale of how the world was beguiled by the dream of an Afghan Shangri-La that never existed. Nile Green Nile Green is a historian who specializes in Islamic history of Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Europe, including that of the wider Persianate world. Green is Professor of History and the current holder of the Ibn Khaldun Endowed Chair in World History at the University of California, Los Angeles.
