The Berlinische Galerie has devoted over 1000 square metres to presenting its collection. Waiting to be discovered among the roughly 250 works on show are paintings, prints, photographs, architecture and archive materials rarely or never displayed before. Walking around this exhibition is like time travel and takes visitors through Berlin in 17 chapters: the Kaiser’s era, the Weimar Republic, the Nazi dictatorship, the new beginnings after 1945, Cold War in the divided city, and the counter-cultures and unconventional lifestyles that evolved in East and West under the shadow of the Wall. In East Berlin, an alternative art community developed from the late 1970s. In West Berlin from the late 1970s, aggressive art by the “Neue Wilden” placed the divided city back in the international limelight.

LAS Art Foundation is pleased to present Pollinator Pathmaker, a living artwork and participatory project conceived by artist Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg. This impactful initiative in interspecies art uses algorithmic technology to generate planting schemes for gardens, computed to support the greatest diversity of pollinating insects possible. It signals a shift toward the post-anthropocentric thinking necessary to face the current climate and biodiversity crises, and toward the non-human aesthetics and experimental formats that pave the way. Ambitious and future-minded, it is exemplary of how art can act as a driver for change, and offer new perspectives on our shared planet. Growing in the forecourt of the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin, the LAS- commissioned garden will be the first edition outside of the UK. LAS has committed to amplifying Pollinator Pathmaker’s impact by undertaking an extensive public campaign, which calls upon local communities, hobby gardeners and activists to get involved in pollinator protection by planting their own version of the artwork – what the artist refers to as DIY Editions – via Ginsberg’s free online tool: www.pollinator.art. Responding to the alarming decline in pollinator populations in recent decades, Ginsberg has worked with horticulturalists, pollinator experts and an AI scientist to devise an algorithmic tool that designs bespoke gardens for pollinating insects. Supported by the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin, the LAS Edition will be customised for Continental Europe, and will feature more than 7,000 plants of 80 different varieties, planted over a 722-square-metre plot.

The International Spy Museum is proud to host this official exhibition of iconic vehicles, all used on-screen by 007 and his many allies and adversaries. While James Bond is a fictional character, he embodies the spirit of many real spies in this museum. These men and women, from around the world, were inspired by over six decades of the Bond film franchise and its enduring cultural influence. Bond In Motion is a celebration of six decades of 007 vehicles. The exhibition features 17 iconic pieces from the EON Productions Archive and the Ian Fleming Foundation. Props, models scale and clips from the films are also on show alongside cars, motorcycles, submarines, and more from the Q Branch garage.

The exhibition is aimed at gamers of all ages, but also at visitors who have little experience with computer games. The fact that computer games have developed into a leading medium is no longer a daring thesis. The social and aesthetic significance of the interactive and multimedia medium can no longer be overlooked. The computer game has freed itself from its origins as a laboratory experiment and toy and has become "the" medium of digital society, somewhere between pop culture, entertainment and art. With the opening of the exhibition »The World of Games« in the fall of 1997, the ZKM was one of the first art institutions worldwide to give video game culture a permanent public platform in an art context. Since then, the ZKM has repeatedly reshaped the presentation of games in a series of different exhibitions.

Already 2,000 years ago, the emperors of China had portraits of loyal officials and generals made in order to display them in their palaces. This presentation features depictions of meritorious officers that the Qianlong Emperor (r. 1736–1795) had commissioned for their display in the hall of fame Ziguangge to demonstrate his power and legitimacy. In the 20th century they became spoils of war not one but two times. Located adjacent to the Forbidden City in Beijing, the Ziguangge is a two-storey pavilion. During the reign of the Qianlong Emperor (r. 1736 – 1795), the building was a venue for military rituals and banquets and housed paintings with battle scenes of the imperial military campaigns and portraits of meritorious officers.

Mark Bradford, with his layered forms, materials and conceptual complexity, explores the social and political structures that reify marginalized communities and vulnerable groups. As Bradford's first solo exhibition in Germany, it also marks the reopening of the historic Rick Hall of the Hamburger Bahnhof Museum. On display are 19 works he has created over the past 20 years. The exhibition will travel to the Aijulie Pacific Museum in Seoul in August this year and will be exhibited at the Kunstmuseum Bern in Switzerland in February next year.

Dieser Workshop wird von Sedi Ghadiri geleitet, eine Auteur-Regisseurin mit umfangreicher Erfahrung im fiktionalen Schreiben. Mit einer abwechslungsreichen Karriere vom Studium der Nahostwissenschaften bis hin zu Filmregie und Drehbuch, hat Sedi stets soziale Barrieren gebrochen und außerhalb der Normen gearbeitet. Uns interessiert dieses mittlerweile vielfach auch unter psychologischen Aspekten beschriebene Paradoxon, negative Emotionen zu genießen. Als Metal nach den ersten knapp zwei Jahrzehnten des Reifeprozesses in den 1980er Jahren an Bedeutung gewann, begann er auch sich bis heute in unzählige Subgenres aufzuspalten, von denen jedes seinen eigenen strengen Sinn für visuelle Darstellung hatte und hat. Die einstweilen als Subkultur bezeichnete Spielart und dazugehörige Ausdrucksweise des weit verästelten Begriffs des Metal hat ihre Wurzeln in den 1960er und 1970er Jahren und steht für Rebellion, Ausdruck von furibunden Emotionen und ein starkes Gefühl der Individualität. Bis zur selbstreferentiellen Reife in den 1980er Jahren und dem Wiedererstarken in den 2000er Jahren, ist die Szene durch eine ausgeprägte Langlebigkeit und Loyalität, sowie neben reaktionären Gebaren ebenso durch progressive Strömungen geprägt. Christoph Dallach schrieb in seinem 2007 im Spiegel erschienenen Artikel Ein Messer in der Hose : Kein Wunder, denn Heavy Metal gilt den meisten Menschen traditionell als dubioser Prekariats-Rock, als kruder Mix von Lärm, Fantasy und Sex: ein Verlierer-Soundtrack für jene, die nicht erwachsen werden wollen oder können. Eingestandenermaßen trifft man heute in der Metal-Szene auf einen zunehmenden Grad an Intellektualisierung und Selbstthematisierung: Bands erklären, wie sie zu ihren Ideen kommen und schmücken diese zudem häufig aus. Zum Kern der Metal-Erfahrung gehört, sich wie ein Insider und ein Outsider zugleich zu fühlen. Heavy Metal betrachtet der Fan als eine Alternative zur »unpersönlichen, angepassten und oberflächlichen Welt des Kommerzes« . So gesehen könnte eine Funktion der expliziten und gewalthaltigen Texte darin bestehen, Fans und Außenstehende stärker voneinander abzugrenzen. Was können wir dieser Selbstreflexion noch hinzufügen? Es gibt die streitbare Katharsishypothese, dass man in dem Fall durch Heavy Metal negative Energien abreagieren kann. Metal erlaubt, mit Tod, mit Leid, Schmerz und Gewalt auf eine konstruktive Art und Weise umzugehen. Durch die Musik werde es dann in eine Kunstform übersetzt. In der von Andreas Hachulla und Jan Brokof kuratierten Ausstellung wird das Schau Fenster zum MetalShowRoom und in ihm Metalmorphosen verschiedener Couleur dargeboten. Die teilnehmenden Künstlerinnen und Künstler speisen sich entweder aus der Szene, bzw. spielen selbst in Bands, oder haben sich in ihrer künstlerischen Arbeit mit dem Thema hinreichend auseinandergesetzt. Opulent und theatralisch, aber mit entsprechender Ernsthaftigkeit, werden wir uns dem Genre Metal annähern. Die Rhetorik des Metal ist bisweilen weniger ironisch als die anderer Bereiche der Kultur. Die Art und Weise, wie Bilder verwendet werden, ist in der Regel viel geradliniger als in anderen Kulturbereichen. Die Motivation dieser Ausstellung liegt in der Aneignung des Metal-Stils durch die Kunst (nicht zu verwechseln mit der entgegengesetzten Aneignung). Uns interessiert, ob sich dadurch das Original verändert. Wir richten uns nicht nur explizit an Metal Fans, sondern vor allem auch an ein Publikum, die das Design Heavy Metal kennen, aber nicht wissen, wofür es steht. Das Selbstverständnis der Inszenierung von musikalischen und visuellen Extremen des Metal weckt sowohl optisch als auch als Lebensstil die Neugier und vermag Außenstehende teils immer noch einzuschüchtern. Von Waffenaccessoires und Militärkleidung bis hin zu nietenbesetztem Leder, lebendigen Bildern und nicht entzifferbaren Logos – jedes Subgenre verfügt über seine eigenen codierten visuellen Hinweise, die für bisweilen verwirrte Außenstehende als Lackmustest dienen. If you can read the Bandlogo, it´s not brutal enough. Visuelle Präsentation knüpft an alle Musikgenres an, aber keine Musikszene legt so viel Wert auf Visualität und Theatralität wie Metalbands. Visualität, aber auch Theatralität waren schon immer genuine Eigenschaften der Bildenden Kunst. Prof. Dr. Jörg Scheller gebraucht in seinem Buch Metalmorphosen in dem Zusammenhang den passenden Begriff der Semiosphäre. Oberflächlich gesehen lässt sich also die Metal-Szene mit der Kunstszene sehr einfach vergleichen. Unzählige Stilrichtigen prägen beide Szenen. Durch ständige Vermischungen der Stile, die Wiederaufnahme von Referenzen älterer Strömungen sowie das Miteinbeziehen oder Negieren moderner technischer Möglichkeiten entstehen bis heute immer wieder neue Genres und Subgenres. Wie in der Kunst gibt es im Metal den Mainstream und den Underground mit häufig fließenden Übergängen. Wie viele Kunstrichtungen entstand Metal u.a. aus einer Ablehnung des Mainstreams und nutzte Bildsprachen, um ein Identitätsgefühl zu schaffen. Für die einen ist es pure Leidenschaft wo Geld keine Rolle spielt, für andere ist es ein Riesengeschäft. In beiden Szenen gibt es Megaevents über das Jahr verteilt und die kleinen Veranstaltungen in Clubs und Projekträumen. Die Vielfalt der Anhängerschaft ist so divers wie zahlreich. Allein in Deutschland gehen Schätzungen von ca. 10 % der Bevölkerung aus. Nur die T-Shirts und Patches sind in der Metal-Szene um längen besser als in der Kunstwelt. So wie Punks und Biker durch Patches die Treue zu verschiedenen Bands oder Outlaw-Gangs schworen, gehen Metalheads noch einen Schritt weiter und verwandelten diese „Strickwaren“ in eine Kunstform. Mit nur einem Patch oder einem Logo auf dem T-Shirt könnten Fans ihre gesamte soziale Szene kommunizieren. Denn wenn Metaller ein Konzert besuchen, kleiden sie sich normalerweise anständig, tragen ein Band-T-Shirt, eine Kutte oder Lederjacke. Es gibt eine Ziviltracht und eine Abendgarderobe, wie in der Oper auch. Ziehen sie Ihre Abendgarderobe als Metalhead oder als Kunstinteressiertes Publikum an und besuchen sie unseren MetalShowRoom die „Metalmorphosen“. In den „Metalmorphosen“ maßen wir uns nicht an, einen kompletten Überblick über die Szene zu geben geschweige denn eine kulturhistorische Analyse. In unserem Metalshowroom Schau Fenster werden wir Einblicke geben. Wir als Fans, Liebhaber, als Interessierte und Faszinierte werden uns durch das Geflecht aus Metal Musik, Kultur und sozialem Umfeld wühlen. Fragen zu Konzept und Spontaneität, Szene und Individualität, Professionalität und Hobby, Kunst und Kommerz etc. werden natürlich gestellt. Aber vor allem wollen wir in das Gefühl des Heavy Metal eintauchen als Übersetzer für den „Szenefremden“ hilft uns die Kunst.
