Nature's Foundations 3: 2024 Artist Residency Program Exhibition | Pepper Street Arts Centre

Centre
Arts
Opens: Friday 4 October 6 pmNature Foundation is an apolitical not-for-profit foundation that invests in conserving, restoring and protecting South Australian landscapes, flora and fauna, to ensure their survival. Its work promotes the sustainable management and conservation of the State’s biodiversity assets. Nature Foundation’s principal and most complex reserves are Witchelina (4,200sq km in the Far North of SA), and Hiltaba (780sq km in the Far West). Both are former pastoral properties in remote outback regions.Since 2019 Nature Foundation has operated an Artist Residency Program. The program aims to attract professional artists who are producing high quality work inspired by nature, that will be interesting and affordable to Nature Foundation members and a wider public. In practice, the Residency Program provides for an invitation to up to three artists per year to spend up to one or two weeks on either Witchelina, Hiltaba, or a week on each, at the Foundation’s expense. Nature Foundation provides participating artists with suitable accommodation and general support, including orientation to, and guidance on the Reserves. Nature Foundation hopes to promote the works generated by their experience of and response to the Reserves. The three artists that were selected for the program in 2024 were Mary Pulford, (based in Adelaide), Tim Thomson and Rosana Cohen (a couple, also Adelaide-based), and Georgina Sambell (based in Victoria). Each artist is inspired by nature in its different aspects. Visiting Nature Foundation's remote reserves, these artists all take their inspiration from nature in its different aspects. Their work is a rich expression of environments they've observed, and the synergies they evoke between nature conservation and nature-based art. The amazing artwork created as part of this year's residencies will be showcased in Nature Foundation 3 exhibition at the Pepper Street Arts Centre in October 2024. These in-person classes promise to be memorable, challenging and fun and in our final session we will share excerpts of the play in a performance presentation to an invited audience of family and friends in an afternoon filled with witty, accomplished and unforgettable performances. Don't miss out on this opportunity to get to grips with the magic of Shakespearean comedy in performance and to hone your acting skills. The course will refresh techniques for approaching verse over the 8 weeks and spend time digging down into the text so all participants are clear on the story and understand the particualar language of the piece. Leading from intellectual understanding to clarity of delivery to the nuance of expressive performance the course is open to all levels of experience but is perhaps best suited to particiapnts who already have some experience of working with Shakespearean verse. Sections of the play will be allocated for performance and then coached and directed by Gareth - rehearsing to a final presentation that will 'frame' the piece with narration and share various speeches and scenes with an audience. Feel free to sign up at patreon.com/gazken at the £5 tier or above to gain acess to a discounted ticket price. Gareth Kennerley has 20 years experience as a professional performer on stage, screen and radio. He has worked in theatre in the West End, at the National Theatre, The Donmar Warehouse and The Almeida among many others across the country, on screen for ITV, Amazon and others and on Radio for BBC RADIO 4. His most recent Shakespearan work includes 2 productions A Midsummer Night's Dream at Kew Gardens; acclaimed productions of Macbeth directed by Yael Farber for the Almeida and Othello directed at the National by Clint Dyer - where he had the opportunity to play Montano but also to cover Iago; he has just finished a 3 week developmental workshop with Sinead Rushe working towards an innovative reimagining of Hamlet. As a teacher Gareth has, among a varied range of experience, previously run his own performance and training company (through which he has directed/written/devised upward of 20 shows), coached LAMDA, voice, confidence, audition technique and reprtoire building on a one to one basis as well as having taught as a visiting practitioner at the Guildford Schooll of acting and other school and university settings. His teaching method is friendly and personal but always with the goal of stretching the student so that they become unafraid of being extraordinary. 'I've had the pleasure of working with Gareth Kennerley on a classical piece of text. His process is very practical, precise, insightful and HONEST, which suited me perfectly.' Remigiusz Rachuba – Actor (1-1 Acting Coaching Student) 'Gareth was fantastic to work with and get advice from. He brought out the best in me as an actor by making me really think about the texts we were looking at. After a few months’ work focusing on audition monologues, sight-reading and singing, I won places at the Central School of Speech and Drama and LAMDA. I couldn't have done it without his first-hand knowledge of the industry and how actors are working today; his sense of fun, his openness and his work ethic.' Samuel Jenkins-Shaw - Actor (1-1 Acting Coaching Student) I couldn't have dreamt of a better introduction to the world of acting.... It was fun, beautifully paced and inspiring. The format was great but the magic was for me in Gareth's ability to get us to feel totally comfortable in the group. It really made all the difference when it came to acting. In the quaint Victorian town of Narralla, everybody unfortunately knows everybody’s business… or thinks they do, but no one knows who Ash really is. Your run-of-the-mill small-town postie, she sorts and delivers the mail on time. She’s a little socially awkward, but otherwise friendly. Perfectly normal - except for the little bit about reading other people’s mail and creating imaginary friends based on the stuff she reads about them. So when a murder goes down, of course SHE has to solve it; she knows everyone the best after all… right? With a cast of colourful characters, every one of them a suspect, Postal Confessions is a fast-paced murder mystery romp where things are not quite as they seem, and reality is often stranger (and more interesting) than fiction. A story about overcoming self doubt and finding connection in the strangest of places. Even if that connection is created by murder taking place… ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Show Dates: Oct 10-19 Thurs Oct 10 - Sat Oct 12 & Tues Oct15 - Fri Oct18, 7:30 pm, Sat Oct 19, 5:00pm (90 mins, no intervals) Post-Show Q&A with Postal Confessions Creative Team - Fri 11 Oct Dress Up Night: Imaginary Friends - Tues 15 Oct In The MUST Space: Grnd Flr, West Campus Centre, 21 Chancellors Walk, Monash Clayton Tickets: $17 MSA plus | $19 Concession | Full $25 Enquiries via MUST: E: msa-must@monash.edu Social Media - Facebook & Insta: musttheatre ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Theme for the Dress Up Night (15 Oct) - Imaginary Friends: Did you have imaginary friends growing up?
