Liars of Orpheus is a show where writers win points from bootlegging their truths past their opponents or having their lies mistaken for truths. This month we're very lucky to have Aaron Hunter, Dex Neily, Lydia Kwa and Stephen Collis as our presenters and our brand new host, all the way from the republic of east Vancouver, Lucia Misch. Lucia Misch is a writer, performer and facilitator from unceded Muwekma Ohlone land. Lucia's spoken word poetry has found a home everywhere from historic theaters to high school auditoriums, and their first collection of poetry, The Problem With Solitaire, was released by Write Bloody North in 2020. Aaron Hunter (he/him) is a poet, performer, visual artist and student. He produces and hosts Brave Voices, the weekly poetry open mic in Port Moody. In between classes and work you can find him writing on topics such as identity, community and healing. His debut chapbook The Archives is set to be released by the end of 2024. Dex Neily (they/them) is a poet and performer from Lekwungen territories whose work centres around disability and queer identity. They have represented Victoria nationally and internationally at seven spoken word festivals, and was a finalist at both the 2021 and 2022 Canadian Individual Poetry Slam. They are currently seeking new ways to combine their loves and their pains into art that restores those who experience it. You can find their work on YouTube or hear them perform at the Tongues of Fire open mics run by the Victoria Poetry Project. Their list of superpowers include compassion and former-theatre-kid energy levels. Lydia Kwa has published two books of poetry (The Colours of Heroines, 1992; sinuous, 2013) and five novels (This Place Called Absence, 2000; The Walking Boy, 2005 and 2019; Pulse, 2010 and 2014; Oracle Bone, 2017; A Dream Wants Waking, 2023). About the Book Synopsis: The Flesh of Ice is a searingly honest and deeply heartfelt collection by Garry Gottfriedson, dedicated to those who attended the Kamloops Indian Residential School (KIRS) and other residential schools in Canada. Gottfriedson, a survivor of KIRS, shares his own stories as well as those of other survivors in his community. Here, in hauntingly visceral poems, are the living conditions, policies and practices of the school itself, the stories of those who lived there, and the names of practitioners of the school, called out and cursed. Lastly, personal stories are given space to reclaim the narrative, taking readers on a journey of resilience, survival, pain and joy. About the Author Garry Gottfriedson, from Kamloops, BC, is deeply rooted in his Secwépemc (Shuswap) cultural teachings. He holds a Master's of Education from Simon Fraser University and studied Creative Writing under Allen Ginsberg and Marianne Faithfull at the Naropa Institute. Gottfriedson has received honorary doctorates from the University of Northern British Columbia and Thompson Rivers University. He has published thirteen books, including Skin Like Mine and The Flesh of Ice. About the Books Ju by Lucy Yang This evocative collection of poetry traces the footprints of heritage through the voice of a child born at the cusp of the new year. Each verse is a vivid tableau, where shiny red pockets, spiced jerky, and tangy sweet hawthorn come alive, weaving a tapestry of flavours and superstitions. As the child navigates the intersection of luck and legacy, readers are invited to explore the deep threads of culture, tradition, and the gentle guidance of elders. This book is a celebration of the tender bonds that tie generations together, captured in the vibrant, sensory language of familial love. —ALLAN CHO, Director of the Asian Canadian Writers’ Workshop Epigrams by Alden Wallace, forthcoming September 2024 About the Authors Lucy Yang(she/her) was born in China and immigrated to Canada with her parents when she was nine years old.
