Please join Milkweed Editions as we welcome our author REBECCA SPIEGEL to Minneapolis to launch her book, Without Her. Please join Milkweed Editions as we welcome our author REBECCASPIEGEL to Minneapolis to read from her book Without Her: A Chronicle of Grief and Love. She will be joined in conversation by CHRISSTEDMAN, a writer, activist, and professor. ABOUTTHEBOOK Rebecca Spiegel is working as a teacher in New Orleans when she learns of her sister’s suicide. Only after the funeral does shock give way to grief—and to many questions. How could Emily do this to herself? How could she have abandoned all those who loved her? And what could have been done differently to prevent this devastating loss? In the days and weeks that follow, Spiegel embarks on a search for answers. She unpacks family history, documents the last traces of her sister’s life, and questions what more she could have done to prevent her death. What she finds instead is that there is no narrative on the other side of grief like this. There is no answer, no easy resolution—only those that leave and those that keep living. Unflinchingly honest, visceral, and raw, this courageous elegy lays bare the hard realities of surviving the loss of a loved one. ABOUTTHESPEAKERS REBECCASPIEGEL teaches writing in Philadelphia, where she lives with her family. She holds an MFA in creative writing from the University of North Carolina Wilmington, and Without Her is her first book. CHRISSTEDMANis a writer, activist, and professor who teaches in the Department of Religion and Philosophy at Augsburg University in Minneapolis, MN, and currently serves as Research Fellow for Augsburg’s Interfaith Institute. He is the author of the books IRL, Faitheist, and the forthcoming Nothing in Particular, and the writer and host of Unread, named one of the best podcasts of 2021 by numerous outlets. In his free time, Chris is a power-lifting hobbyist and LGBTQIA+ fundraiser. In 2024, he was selected for a Moxie Award in recognition of his fundraising efforts in support of trans and gender-expansive Midwesterners. Information Source: Milkweed Books | eventbrite

Rebecca Nagle: By the Fire We Carry | Birchbark Bizhiw

Join us on Wednesday, September 25th at 7:00 PM for a wonderful evening with Rebecca Nagle, author of By the Fire We Carry. Before 2020, American Indian reservations made up roughly 55 million acres of land in the United States. Nearly 200 million acres are reserved for National Forests—in the emergence of this great nation, our government set aside more land for trees than for Indigenous peoples. That changed on July 9, 2020, when a high-profile Supreme Court case—which originated with a small-town murder two decades earlier—affirmed the reservation of Muscogee Nation. The ruling resulted in the largest restoration of tribal land in U.S. history, merely because the Court chose to follow the law. In the 1830s Muscogee people were rounded by the US military at gunpoint and forced into exile halfway across the continent. At the time, they were promised this new land would be theirs for as long as the grass grew and the waters ran. But that promise was not kept. When Oklahoma was create on top of their land, the new state claimed their reservation no longer existed. Over a century later, when a Muscogee citizen was sentenced to death for murdering another Muscogee citizen, his defense attorneys argued the murder occurred on the reservation of his tribe, and therefore Oklahoma didn’t have the jurisdiction to execute him. Oklahoma argued that reservation no longer existed. In the summer of 2020, the Supreme Court said: no more; a ruling that would ultimately underpin multiple reservations covering half the land in Oklahoma, including Nagle’s own Cherokee Nation. Here Rebecca Nagle tells the story of the generations-long fight for tribal land and sovereignty in Eastern Oklahoma. By chronicling both the contemporary legal battle and historic acts of Indigenous resistance, By the Fire We Carry stands as a landmark work of American history. The story it tells exposes both the wrongs that our nation has committed in its long history of greed, corruption and lawlessness, and the Native battle for the right to be here that has shaped our country. Rebecca Nagle is an award-winning reporter, writer, and citizen of Cherokee Nation. She is the creator and host of Crooked Media’s chart-topping podcast This Land. Her work has been featured in The Atlantic, the Washington Post, the Guardian, USA Today, Teen Vogue, the Huffington Post, among other outlets. Nagle lives in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. Join Milkweed Books and Milkweed Managing Editor Lauren Langston Klein as we welcome author JOSELYN TAKACS. Join Milkweed Books and Milkweed Managing Editor Lauren Langston Klein as we welcome author JOSELYNTAKACS in launching her debut novel, Pearce Oysters, out now with Zibby Media. The program will include a reading from the author, followed by an editorial conversation with Lauren Langston Klein. They will discuss novel-writing as a craft, the editorial process, publishing how-tos, and moderate a lively Q + A. ABOUTTHEBOOK A divided family. A devastated community. And the disaster that brings them all together. Pearce Oysters, a family drama set on the Louisiana coastline during the historic 2010 oil spill, follows the Pearces, local oyster farmers whose business, family, and livelihood are on the brink of collapse. This is eye-opening, eco-fiction at its best–a story that highlights the grit and beauty of lives lived in an overlooked corner of the American South. Diving deep into the bonds of family, culture, class, and industry, the novel elevates the voices of deeply sympathetic characters: Jordan, the reluctant head of his family’s storied oyster company; May, his distressed, widowed mother; and Benny, his beatnik musician brother, who returns from New Orleans in their time of crisis. The dynamic between Jordan’s desperation to live up to, and become the business, and Benny’s determination to separate from his family entirely, before the spill, builds the perfect storm. ABOUTTHESPEAKERS JOSELYNTAKACS holds a PhD in Creative Writing and Literature from the University of Southern California and an MFA in Fiction from Johns Hopkins University. Her fiction has appeared in Gulf Coast, Narrative, Tin House online, Harvard Review, The Rumpus, DIAGRAM, Columbia: A Journal of Literature and Art, and elsewhere. She has published interviews and book reviews in the Los Angeles Review of Books and Entropy. She has taught writing at the University of Southern California and Johns Hopkins University. Her debut novel, Pearce Oysters, is a family drama set during the 2010 BP Oil Spill. She lived in New Orleans at the time of the spill, and in 2015, she received a grant to record the oral histories of Louisiana oyster farmers in the wake of the environmental disaster. She currently lives in Portland, Oregon. LAURENLANGSTONKLEINis the managing editor for Milkweed Editions. Prior to joining the team, she worked as the editorial director for an independent press and as a senior editor for HarperCollins. Before discovering that her passion for editing is fueled by working with authors, she served as the managing editor for a print and digital magazine. She holds a BS in journalism from the University of Florida. Information Source: Milkweed Books | eventbrite
