The display includes some of the earliest dolls ever created and traces the development of the craft through the 20th century. From village handiworks to artist-painted pieces, the artifacts on display present an astounding variety of styles and themes. TMORA acknowledges the exceptional gift of Robert J. Brokop, who dedicated his life to collecting handcrafted wooden toys, and donated thousands of Russian wooden nesting dolls to TMORA. Additionally, several dolls on display come from the gift of the family of Evelyn M. Ross. TMORA expresses its profound gratitude to all the collectors who, in recent years, donated their remarkable collections to TMORA. The origin of the Russian nesting doll, also known as Matryoshka, is a matter of legends. Allegedly invented by a professional artist, the dolls became an instant success with collectors when they were displayed at the 1900 World’s Fair in Paris. A thriving industry in its early, pre-revolutionary years, nesting doll production was brought under state control during the Soviet period. Made at state-run facilities across the vast country, Soviet Matryoshka dolls preserved the local character unique to every regional center of production. The 1990s became the Golden Age for the art and craft of Russian nesting dolls. In the turbulent times of the Soviet state collapse, humble wooden toys became a venue for the search for national and personal identity. A Thousand Nesting Dolls will be on view in the Main Gallery October 5, 2024 – March 9, 2025. The Museum of Russian Art (TMORA) proudly holds accreditation by the American Alliance of Museums (AAM), the highest national recognition awarded to museums in the United States. TMORA upholds an independent voice and the freedom of expression to carry out its mission unconstrained by influence from foreign governments, political actors and/or corporate or individual interests. “Blue Elephant” Wood, paint, 7 pieces Artist E. Literary Arts
Join us to celebrate Chloe Spencer's new haunting (and haunted) queer young adult novel, Haunting Melody—featuring ghosts, ghost hunters...and a misunderstood (and extremely dead) musical prodigy. Ticket cost includes a $10 off coupon at the event to be used in store. *** About the book: Failure is a sinister song. One that Melody Myere is all too familiar with. The only child of an acclaimed ghost hunter couple, Melody's First Sacred Hunt should have been a walk in the park. All she needed to do was catch a ghost, like she's done all her life. But when an unexpected wraith showed up causing havoc, Melody was left scarred and embarrassed. Suffering from depression and PTSD post-hunt, Melody relocates to the sleepy island town of Murkmore, where her parents have been tasked with capturing the ghost responsible for a series of grisly deaths. Determined to prove herself, and despite her parents' protests, Melody sets out to capture the specter on her own. When a haunting song lures Melody to an abandoned theater, she encounters a recently deceased musical prodigy by the name of Cyrus. All signs point to Cyrus being the killer, but Melody isn't so sure, suspecting something more discordant is afoot. Haunted by more than just a sinister song, Melody must learn to trust her instincts to catch the killer and prove herself before it's time to face the music. About the authors: Minnesota native Chloe Spencer is an award winning writer, indie gamedev, and filmmaker. She is the author of multiple sapphic horror novellas, novels, and short stories. In her spare time she enjoys playing video games, trying her best at Pilates, and cuddling with her cats. She holds a BA in Journalism from the University of Oregon and an MFA in Film and Television from SCAD Atlanta. Jenna Miller (she/her) writes Young Adult books about fat, queer, nerdy girls who deserve to be seen and have their voices heard. When she’s not obsessing over words, she can be found making charcuterie boards, befriending people online, or exploring places near and far. *** Copies of Haunting Melody are available for order at the links below. If you would like to pickup your order(s) at the event, please select Event pickup in the shipping options at checkout. Limited copies will be available for purchase on-site.
