Emily Lashford will guide you through the fascinating story of St. James Damask, designed for Morris & Co.’s second commission at St. James’s Palace in 1881 and woven by J.O Nicolson. By analysing the commission, design and production of the damask, we can explore the relationship between William Morris’ ideologies on production and design and the realities of an industrialised society. Emily will outline the history of the commission and the production of the damask; how it was influenced by Morris’ attitudes towards manufacturing, and how this relates to his political ideology. She will discuss the St. James damask in the context of the wider St James commissions providing an insight into Morris’ development as an individual and as a businessman across that period, projected into the same space. Finally, she will analyse how Morris approached the politics of public and private space through design. We also offer 2 concession tickets if you identify as low-waged or unwaged. About: Emily Lashford studied History of Art at the Courtauld Institute of Art. She currently works at the Macclesfield Silk Museum and delivered a talk on the Macclesfield and Leek Emboirdery schools for Leek Textiles Weekend in Janurary 2024. She is passionate about textiles of the Arts and Crafts movement, and begins a a MPhil at Cambridge University in September 2024 focussing on working class practitioners of the Arts and Crafts movement in the North West of England. This talk is part of Leek Textile Week, a week-long celebration running from 23-29 September 2024. Leek Textile Week will comprise a series of community-focused activities, talks and exhibitions that celebrate the town’s rich textile heritage. We will weave threads of the past into the present, spinning new connections with artisans from India and beyond whose knowledge helped transform the local industry.
