The Robertson Gift: Paths through Modernity celebrates the monumental gift of significant artworks from the collection of New York philanthropists Julian (1932–2022) and Josie Robertson (1943–2010) to the Gallery.
The donation comprises 15 works by influential modern European artists, including Pierre Bonnard, Georges Braque, Paul Cezanne, Salvador Dalí, André Derain, Henri Fantin-Latour, Paul Gauguin, Fernand Léger, Henri Matisse, Piet Mondrian and Pablo Picasso.
Beginning with the suggestive nude bodies of the late 19th century and ending with a monumental colour-field painting from the 1960s, The Robertson Gift: Paths through Modernity takes visitors on a journey through the major art movements of the modern era, including Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Fauvism, Cubism, Surrealism, and post-war abstraction.

Jenny Holzer | STATEMENT – Truisms + | Auckland Art Gallery
Mar 27, 2024–Apr 26, 2026 (UTC+12)
Auckland
Jenny Holzer’s text works, called Truisms, were first executed as pithy and sometimes provocative slogans on the streets of New York in the late 1970s and early 1980s as stickers, t-shirts and posters, with the intention of taking art out of the museum and into public life. Holzer quickly converted these statements to the media of advertising and public communication with a series of pivotal LED signs, most famously in New York’s Times Square.
Holzer’s use of electronic technology is, she says, motivated by ‘needing to be where people look’. Hanging suspended from the ceiling of the Gallery’s South Atrium, in STATEMENT – Truisms +, 2015 iconic statements like ‘ABUSE OF POWER COMES AS NO SURPRISE’ and ‘ENSURE THAT YOUR LIFE STAYS IN FLUX’ cascade and flash in speech-like pulsating rhythms and rainbow spectrums of colour, seemingly with a life of their own.
Taimoana | Coastlines: Art in Aotearoa | Auckland Art Gallery
Apr 20, 2024–Jun 7, 2026 (UTC+12)
Auckland
Taimoana | Coastlines explores the art of Aotearoa New Zealand, locating it within Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa, the wider Pacific region. Taking the concept of the coast, or shoreline, as a starting point, the exhibition navigates a sea of ideas, offering multiple perspectives on New Zealand art through a selection of works from the collection of Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki.
The coast is central to the way of life of many in Aotearoa New Zealand and it has been throughout our entire history. Integral to te ao Māori, the Māori world, the interconnectedness of land and sea is reflected in cultural narratives and practices. The coast is at times a source of sustenance and employment, at others a route for travel, a space of recreation, conflict, well-being or inspiration, but also, as the climate continues to change, at the frontline of danger. The coast is a threshold, an in-between zone, a perpetually shifting meeting point of land and sea that prompts us to examine our relationships with both.
In this exhibition, artists from the 18th century to today ride the oceans’ currents, traversing themes from the enormity of the Pacific to the vessels that have crossed its expanse and plied Aotearoa’s coasts, and exploring their personal responses to the shore as well as the legacies of colonial encounters and conflict.
Ngā Taonga Tūturu: Treasured Māori Portraits | Auckland Art Gallery
Sep 18, 2024–Nov 29, 2026 (UTC+12)
Auckland
Representations of tūpuna, ancestors, hold profound significance in te ao Māori, the Māori world. They embody customary cultural values including mana, tapu and mauri (prestige, sacredness and life force) and hold the ancestral ties of whakapapa. For centuries, representations of tūpuna were given form through whakairo (carving). The mediums of painting and photography were adopted from the mid-19th century for this purpose, with these new forms of portraiture congregating among or standing in place of whakairo in whare tūpuna (ancestral meeting houses) and their modern equivalents.
Ngā Taonga Tūturu: Treasured Māori Portraits brings together whakairo and oil paintings from the collection of Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki, offering insights into the significance of tūpuna representations within te ao Māori. ‘Ngā taonga’ means many treasures while ‘tūturu’ signifies something permanent, true and original. This exhibition considers the inherent cultural values embodied and expressed within and through these taonga from a te ao Māori view.
One of the most prolific portraitists of the late 19th and early 20th-century, Gottfried Lindauer’s paintings acknowledge the mana and self-determination of tūpuna through his respectful evocation of their likeness. They were widely commissioned by Māori and Pākehā (European New Zealander) alike. The portraits in this exhibition radiate outwards from Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, representing iwi (tribe) and hapū (subtribe) from throughout the motu (island). Recalling a whare tupuna, the gallery resonates with the mauri of these tūpuna.

Making Spaces | Elam artist talk series: Andrea du Chatenier | Elam Lecture Theatre
Sep 12, 2024 (UTC+12)ENDED
Auckland
Hosted by Te Waka Tūhura Elam School of Fine Arts for artists and art professionals to share their practice and research. Glam RockAndrea du Chatenier is an established sculptor turned ceramicist whose avid exploration of the medium embraces play, re-invention and reinterpretation. She says, I am a badly behaved potter who always fails at functionality. Not for me, the brown-smoked earth tones of the craft potters of the 1970s. I see no need to create a rustic vision of earthiness when the Earth’s geology is full of exotic, flamboyant, and beguiling minerals that are as glitzy as a glamour queen. I embrace oozy clay, brittle embellishments, glitzy surfaces, unstable bases and entropic forms. My work is infused with joy, wit, and a playful nod to the West Coast ceramicists of the USA. I am for the speculative fictions of clay-work, over the diary entries. I am for trial and error, and for “what ifs?” over tried and trues. I am a badly behaved potter who always fails at functionality. My clay skills begin with bad habits and end with bad breaks. I am for impurities and mixed-up processes. I am lazy and loose, uptight and controlling. I make what I want to make, and I hope against hope, the kiln Gods will wreak havoc. – Andrea du ChatenierJoin us on campus as this leading artist and 'badly behaved potter' shares who she is and how she makes. About the artist: Andrea du ChatenierBorn in Kirikiriroa Hamilton, Andrea du Chatenier is a sculptor turned ceramicist. She holds a BFA from Elam School of Fine Arts and a Master of Fine Arts from RMIT, Melbourne. Andrea has received numerous grants and awards for her accomplished and challenging work, including selection for the Sao Paulo Biennale, the Wallace Arts Trust Vermont Award, and the Portage Ceramics Residency Award at Guldagergaard Research Centre, Denmark. In 2022, Andrea was awarded the Blumhardt Foundation Gift for her contribution to New Zealand Craft. After completing the Tylee Cottage Artist Residency at the Sarjeant Gallery in 2004, Andrea set up a studio in Whanganui and spent many years teaching at the local art school. With her current practice, Andrea continues to explore the possibilities of clay. The forms are abstracted and commonly stacked together, emphasising the tactile, precarious and sensual properties of clay. Image: Andrea du Chatenier, Cornflower. Photo by Sam Hartnett / Supplied.

Sep 24, 2024 (UTC+12)ENDED
Auckland
What was or could be today (again)In this lecture Te Ao will trace a trajectory through his recent work that considers the relationship between filmic space, artistic imagination and live experience. Over several years Te Ao has explored the overlay between his own lived geography and the imagery captured within his work. Recent works in this vein have, for the artist, underlined the significance of this calibration and the political efficacy in “going home.” Join us on campus as Te Ao shares his perspective on the intersection of art, film, and personal journey. About the artist: Shannon Te Ao (Ngāti Tūwharetoa)Te Ao's works traverse the mediums of live performance, writing, photography and videoed performance. Whakataukī (proverbs), waiata (song) and poetry have become resources for Te Ao in his ongoing exploration of language, ways of knowing and the nuances of communication. Te Ao’s elegiac images and installations explore dynamics of indigeneity, language, and life. Te Ao’s works enact a compression wherein past and present co-exist, and daily life is inextricably linked to multifarious social, cultural, and philosophical histories. Te Ao won the Walters Prize in 2016. Since then, he has completed a Master of Fine Arts from Whiti o Rehua School of Art, Massey University, and continues to exhibit nationally and internationally.
