Nanchizi Art Museum: An Art Palace Where Tradition and Modernity Meet

Nanchizi Art Museum is like a quiet art oasis hidden in the hustle and bustle of the city.

Once you step into it, the architectural layout of the main exhibition hall is amazing. The upper and lower floors are made of pure wooden structure with column grid arrangement. The mortise and tenon joint technology that has been used for thousands of years has been revitalized here. The vertical and horizontal superimposed brackets are like loyal guards, silently transmitting the load and greatly enhancing the firmness of the building. In the main hall on the first floor, Xu Lei&#39;s &quot;Meng Qianshan&quot; is hung in the middle hall, and the couplets inscribed by Kang Youwei are on both sides. This exhibition method is like a magic door, instantly bringing the audience into the hall of the Jiangnan mansion, and the rich classical atmosphere is overwhelming. The newly opened second-floor exhibition hall is even more ingenious, making full use of the classical beam-column structure and using soft gauze curtains as partitions. Prince Gong&#39;s Mansion has a very profound historical heritage. It was first built during the Qianlong period and was originally the residence of Heshen. It was later used as the Prince Qing&#39;s Mansion during the Jiaqing period, and became the residence of Prince Gong Yixin during the Xianfeng period. This palace witnessed the historical process of the Qing Dynasty&#39;s rise and fall and carries rich historical and cultural information.
 
The mansion is neatly built with exquisite workmanship, fully embodying the splendor and wealth of the royal family and the simple and elegant charm of the common people. It is divided into three routes: east, middle and west. Each route has multiple courtyards and is run through a strict central axis from south to north. The Yin&#39;an Hall and Jiale Hall in the middle road have green glazed tile roofs, which show the prince&#39;s majesty. The &quot;Ledao Hall&quot; on the east road was the living place of Prince Gong Yixin. The courtyards on the west side are relatively small and exquisite. The main buildings are Baoguang Room and Xijinzhai. The exquisitely carved nanmu partitions in Xijinzhai were made by Heshen in the style of Ningshou Palace in the Forbidden City, and are also one of the evidences of his extravagance and violation of regulations. The two-story rear building at the deepest part of the mansion is 156 meters long from east to west. There are 88 windows on the back wall and 108 rooms inside, commonly known as &quot;99 and a half rooms&quot;, which is derived from the Taoist meaning of &quot;fullness when the time is full&quot;.
 
The garden of Prince Gong&#39;s Mansion is called &quot;Cui Jin Garden&quot; and it can be regarded as the essence of garden art. In response to the mansion, the garden is also divided into three roads: east, middle and west. The entrance is a white marble arched stone gate with Western architectural style, and the four characters &quot;静涵太古&quot; (Jing Han Tai Gu) on the door plaque have profound meaning. The garden is centered on a stele with the word &quot;Fu&quot; written by Emperor Kangxi. In front of it are Dule Peak and Bat Pond, and in the back are Green Sky Retreat and Bat Hall. The layout is ingenious and leaves one with endless aftertaste. The Western-style gate, the stele with the word &quot;Fu&quot; written by the emperor, and the indoor theater in the garden are collectively known as the &quot;three wonders&quot; of Prince Gong&#39;s Mansion. The Grand Theater is a fully enclosed structure with a construction area of ​​685 square meters.
