This is the longest journey, to the place where I started before──Hu Defu’s ‘The Longest Road’
The solo exhibition “The Wind on the Mountain is Still Fragrant” by Taiwanese Paiwan artist Yidan Bawawalon, which will be held at Asia Art Center (Taipei) from September 14 to November 10, 2024, is a continuation and response to the concept of his solo exhibition “The Wind on the Mountain is Very Fragrant” at the Taipei Art Center in 2014. It was Yidan’s first solo exhibition after the 2009 Typhoon Morakot, and it was also the first large-scale and well-organized solo exhibition in his creative career. After 10 years, this solo exhibition “The Wind on the Mountain is Still Fragrant” uses the two images of “wind” and “spiritual bird” to allegorize Yidan’s worldview in art. In Yidan's concept, the spirit bird symbolizes eternal existence. Even though things change over time, life and all things inevitably flow and change with time, but because of the eternal pull, the wind blowing from the mountain is still fragrant.

The Taipei Museum of Contemporary Art has opened a new exhibition venue this year. It will launch a one-year exhibition plan starting from January 27. The artist Lai Chi-sheng has carefully created a new "Chuan Hall" venue to connect the art museum and the school. connect the spaces between them. This exhibition area is modeled on the historic building of an elementary school built a hundred years ago, providing viewers with a fun interactive experience of table tennis and awakening memories of past youth. Daoli is a combination of roads and mileage. Ancient daoli and traffic maps generally refer to various maps with mileage as the main content, or maps that also depict roads and record mileage. In addition to single-piece forms, they are often attached to books in the form of illustrations. Therefore, all maps with daoli content, whether books or maps, are within the scope of display.
In terms of function, ancient road and traffic maps are roughly similar to today's electronic traffic guide systems. Both guide traffic and show the terrain around the roads. With the evolution of mapping technology, the appearance of modern and ancient road and traffic maps is very different, and their popularity and convenience are incomparable. Modern electronic traffic guides are of a single form and readily available, while the number of ancient road and traffic maps is small, but the categories and forms are rich and diverse, such as the road passes and route maps in business books, prefecture and county maps often engraved in local chronicles, or detailed round-trip station maps specially compiled for emperors to tour and visit tombs, border defense maps used by soldiers to garrison and patrol the border, large-scale post road maps connecting the four directions, and local political division maps such as provinces, prefectures, states, and counties, with city route maps drawn in conjunction, etc.
The exhibition features 20 sets of maps and books with road characteristics from the 14th century to the early 20th century in the museum's collection. They are divided into two sections. The first section includes: Grand View of Post Road, North-South Road, Emperors of the Qing Dynasty Visiting Mausoleums, Traveling Around the World, and Citizens' Avenue. The second section maintains the first and last sections, and the rest are adjusted to patrol the border, cross the mountains and ridges, and patrol the south.
In addition to cultural relics, the multimedia interactive installation "Walking on the Road of Taiwan" uses the "Kangxi Taiwan Map" (collected by the National Taiwan Museum) and the "Qianlong Taiwan Map" as materials, combined with aerial dynamic images of the traffic route from Hsinchu to the museum, the two complement each other, providing the audience with a real feeling of walking on the ancient north-south road of Taiwan.

There are many "silent voices" in history. They may not be recorded in detail in documents, but they have walked the land, participated in the times, and have unique life stories.
In the traditional male-centered society of the past, women were often a relatively silent group. However, how do women gain a foothold in history? What footprints do they leave? This regular exhibition starts from the theme of women's history and takes the "Princess of the Qing Dynasty" that is still familiar in novels or dramas as the theme to try to explore these topics.
The exhibition content is mainly based on the archives and documents of the Qing Palace in our collection, presenting the identity system, interpersonal relationships, life stories of the princesses of the Qing Dynasty, and their position and significance in the political operation of the Qing Empire. In these various documents, perhaps we can find out what kind of voices and gestures people outside the mainstream narrative of history have left in the past and present.
