The Lettering Arts Trust is pleased to present the private view of 'The Nereids', an exhibition showcasing the exceptional work of leading contemporary lettering artists based in the UK. This captivating exhibition unveils 27 exquisite artworks that depict the benign and mythical nymphs of Ancient Greece and Rome. Representing the sea's bountiful abundance and safeguarding sailors and fishermen, each Nereid embodies a distinct attribute of the sea. The artworks, crafted with meticulous skill, employ various mediums such as calligraphy, etching, letterpress, and hand letter carving.
Esteemed lettering artists including Alan Kitching, Nina Bilbey, Annet Stirling, Cherrell Avery, Charlotte Howarth, Peter Furlonger, and Sue Hufton have graciously contributed their remarkable pieces to this exhibition. Additionally, this event serves as a platform for emerging lettering artists to showcase their talents, infusing their work with a contemporary sensibility while paying homage to their predecessors. The exhibition curator and trustee of The Lettering Arts Trust, Karoline Newman, will deliver a short talk on the Trust's work during the proceedings.
By attending this exhibition, not only will visitors have the opportunity to marvel at these intriguing artworks, but they will also support the training of the next generation of lettering artists, as all proceeds from sales will contribute to the Trust's work. This exclusive event will take place at The University of Winchester, West Downs Campus, in Winchester, on February 28, 2024. Admission is free, providing a wonderful chance for art enthusiasts and the general public alike to engage with the beauty and craftsmanship of lettering art.
