The National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC will host the "1898: U.S. Imperial Visions and Revisions" Symposium on September 8 and 9, 2023. This symposium, organized around the landmark exhibition, aims to shed light on the pivotal conflicts of 1898 and their impact on modern history. Over 40 scholars and artists from various countries, including the Philippines, Guam, Puerto Rico, Hawai‘i, Cuba, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States, will convene for two days of panels, roundtables, and gallery talks. The symposium will provide a panoramic perspective on the War of 1898, the Joint Congressional Resolution to annex Hawai‘i, and the Philippine-American War. Renowned historian Ada Ferrer, the 2022 Pulitzer Prize Winner, will deliver the keynote address on the evening of September 8, followed by a Q&A session and public reception. The exhibition itself has been highly regarded as "the best and most engaging work the National Portrait Gallery has done in a decade." All events, including the keynote address, will take place at the McEvoy Auditorium, accessible via the G St entrance. Admission to the symposium is free, ensuring that this important historical event is accessible to all.
