There is no agenda, other than to share some fresh-air time with each other and other men who might want to stretch their legs, and maybe talk about what's up. What might we talk about? I'm not even going to start a list. Pretty much anything that's giving you a hard time —or a good time!— is something we can listen to while we walk. No expectations. If you want to just be with other men going for a walk with their dogs and kids, you're welcome to join me. Register (by donation) and I'll send you the next walk location. Call if you have any questions. -Rev. Hans / 250-792-1408 Information Source: SacredBodies.ca: Arts of Authentic Relationship | eventbrite

Intro to Pressure Canning: Community Kitchen with Julie Matthews | LUSH Valley Upstairs

Jul 7, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
Courtenay
Cultural Experiences
Join LUSH Valley and Julie Matthews for a Community Kitchen where you'll learn the basics of pressure canning by preserving broths and stocks! Are you curious about pressure canning? Maybe you own a pressure canner but are unsure of how to use it safely? Come take part in a hands-on workshop and learn how to use a pressure canner, safely and confidently. Guided by experienced canner Julie Matthews, participants will learn how to pressure can, practicing by preserving a quart of vegan smoked garlic scape broth – a valuable skill, as broths and stocks cannot be waterbath canned. This pressure canning class applies to both veggie broths or meat broths: any clear stock that contains no solids (such as soups). In this class, you will also learn what to look for when buying a second hand canner or testing a new-to-you pressure canner that hasn’t been used in a while: what to check, what’s important to look for, how to safely test it. Julie will bring two different styles of pressure canners to give an overview of both types.  Participants will gain hands-on experience with each step of the process, preserving one quart of pressure canned smoked garlic broth which will be ready for pickup the following day. All supplies are included. Participants should plan to pick up their finished product at LUSH Valley in the days following the workshop. *The workshop may end slightly later than 8:00 PM due to various circumstances that arise during the session. Allergy note: Please email admin@lushvalley.org to let us know of any dietary restrictions. The skills learned in this workshop pair well with LUSH Valley’s Good Food Boxes – an affordable grocery bag full of nutritious, locally-grown, in-season produce. Consider ordering a Good Food Box for pickup the same week you take this class so you can put your new knowledge to use! Order today at lushvalley.localline.org. J ulie Matthews is a musician and music teacher, beekeeper, quilter, artist and cat-servant who thrives on yard and house projects. For almost 30 years, she has saved seeds, canned, pressure canned, dehydrated, fermented, cooked and eaten her own home-grown food! Julie learned the value of food security when she became a young mom, and now grows a large percentage of what her family consumes every year, including meat that she raises and processes at home. Please note: Bursaries are available for this workshop. If the cost of this workshop is a barrier for you in attending, please send us an email at admin@lushvalley.org .
