rebirth of a fraying body | Cooper Gallery
Feb 22, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Dundee
Experience the captivating performance of Saoirse Amira Anis in "rebirth of a fraying body" at Cooper Gallery in Dundee. This intimate performance combines movement and spoken word to embody the creature present in Anis' recent works, representing the non-humanity projected onto marginalized bodies by Western society. Drawing inspiration from radical texts and their own prose, Anis weaves together words that echo the woven ropes of the creature's tentacles. By positioning fugitivity as an act of rebirth, Anis incites urgent collective action towards liberation.
Saoirse Amira Anis' creative practice is rooted in radical care, informality, and empathy, influenced by their Scottish and Moroccan heritage. Their work is informed by Black queer theory, Disability Justice, and the politics of liberation. Through writing, moving image, and performance, Anis explores how the body holds ancestral and lived memories, particularly in relation to guilt, shame, and resistance.
"rebirth of a fraying body" is part of the group exhibition called "The Scale of Things" at Cooper Gallery. This exhibition features three moving image works that delve into the relationships between humans and non-humans, exploring history, intimacy, and spirituality. The exhibition presents the Scottish premiere of Grace Ndiritu's "Becoming Plant" (2022), Saodat Ismailova's "The Haunted" (2017), and Margaret Tait's "Aerial" (1974), celebrating its fiftieth anniversary. Together, these works aim to challenge our understanding of ourselves as part of nature and our desire for intimacy and connection.
Co-curated by Sophia Yadong Hao (Cooper Gallery, DJCAD) and Professor Sarah Perks (Teesside University), "The Scale of Things" invites visitors to reconsider their relationship with the natural world. Cooper Gallery is located on Perth Road, with accessible entrances and facilities. The exhibition video is subtitled and captioned in English, and seating is provided for visitors' comfort.
