Within and Without is a captivating two-part movement piece presented by the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) School of Dance in collaboration with the NUS Museum. This innovative program brings together the realms of fine art and dance to explore the profound themes of identity formation and unity. The performance, divided into two parts, immerses dance diploma students in the context and curatorial directives of the museum. Inspired by the figurative Nanyang paintings showcased in the exhibition Radio Malaya: Abridged Conversations About Art, the first part, Within, embarks on an exploration of the intricate interplay between dance and visual art. The expressive power of both disciplines intertwines to create a mesmerizing narrative of connection and belonging that transcends the constraints of time and space. The second part, Without, takes inspiration from the sculptures of Ng Eng Teng: 1+1=1, and delves into the complexities of the human body within relational dependencies and separations. Through contact duets, the dancers embody the endurance of connectivity, revealing the profound emotions and capacity for coalescence and detachment within the human form.
