Gloucester
Explore the Vibrancy of Congolese Art: Exclusive Guided Tour of Eddy Kamuanga Ilunga’s Nature Morte Following the success of Destination Congo’s recent event, we are thrilled to announce an exclusive guided tour of Eddy Kamuanga Ilunga’s Nature Morte exhibition at the renowned October Gallery. Limited to just 20 participants, this intimate experience offers a unique opportunity to delve into the remarkable world of one of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s most celebrated contemporary artists. Eddy Kamuanga Ilunga’s large-scale, vividly coloured canvases reflect the intersection of tradition and modernity, exploring the shifting cultural identity of the Congolese people. His intricate patterns and evocative imagery serve as a powerful commentary on the resilience and transformation of the DRC in a rapidly globalising world. African contemporary art is gaining unprecedented global recognition. According to the Art Basel 2023 report, works by African contemporary artists saw a record number of auction sales, with over 2,700 pieces sold — nearly double the number prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2022 alone, these artists generated an astonishing $63 million USD in auction sales, surpassing the previous record of $47 million USD set in 2021. The Nature Morte exhibition is more than an art showcase; it’s a celebration of Congolese creativity and cultural excellence. Through this exclusive tour, we aim to deepen appreciation for the beauty, struggles, and spirit of the DRC, inspiring meaningful connections with its heritage. Spaces are extremely limited, so secure your spot now to experience this unmissable artistic journey. Join us as we continue to celebrate Congo’s art, culture, and heritage.

Mad Song perform a characteristically varied programme of music from the last 40 years. The programme opens with two premieres: the first ever performance of Thomas Metcalf's Photogenia, specially written for the ensemble, and the UK premiere of Jean-Louis Agobet's Eclisses. The second half of the concert then treads more familiar ground with two pieces drawing on ancient sources. Epigrams, a piano trio by the American composer Elliot Carter, is modelled on the ancient Greek literary form. Finally, the concert concludes with Grisey's virtuosic Talea, the title of which refers to the repeated rhythmic structures that underpin much medieval music. Mar 19, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Gloucester
Collage, Print, Paint & Montage! Join us for a fun and hands-on art education training session inspired by writer and artist William Burroughs. We’ll explore how accidents, dreams, and everyday moments can spark creativity and open up exciting new ways of learning in the classroom. We’ll play with the cut-up technique to transform words and language - helping children reconnect with literacy and imagination through art. Working with collage, painting, montage, and cut-up exercises, we will: Discover how embracing accidents can spark creativity and surprising new ideas, and learn why exploring multiple interpretations can be more inspiring than relying on a single “generic” answer. See how assemblage techniques and ideas relate to “front yard art,” and can become symbols for social justice as seen in the history of the Watts Towers, and explore practical ways to engage students in creating art from everyday materials.. Working collaboratively to find new ways to: Encourage open-ended fun and exploration among your students. Help students feel more empowered and excited to express themselves. Use cut-up, collage, and montage in your lessons to reshape language and storytelling. This session is perfect for teachers, art educators, and facilitators who want to bring more creativity and student-led activities into their work. Join us working with artist and educator Esther Adesigbin at October Gallery to see how these experimental methods can help you and your students embrace the unknown, play with language, and find magic in ordinary things. Please note that the event will take place upstairs in the theatre, which unfortunately is not an accessible space. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

Film Screening. William S. Burroughs: A Man Within + Q &A with Yony Leyser | October Gallery
Mar 29, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Gloucester
An opportunity to view award winning documentary William S. Burroughs: A Man Within. Featuring exclusive interviews with his closest friends and colleagues, Leyser released William S. Burroughs: A Man Within at the age of 24. This film documents the life and work of Burroughs, “the first person who was famous for things you were supposed to hide.” The film is an unflinching exploration of one of the world’s first openly queer poets, junkies and challengers of censorship, demonstrating that Leyser is unafraid of looking at the dark corners, as well as the bright lights, of the queer experience. Variety Magazine wrote “Like his subject, Leyser strives to disengage from the conventional, while still being lucid. He succeeds admirably.” It screened on over 15 TV stations around the world as well as on Netflix. A Q&A with Yony Leyser will take place after the film screening, (duration 87 minutes.) What's Left of a Radical Vision When it's All Come True? | October Gallery
Apr 5, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Gloucester
A discussion on how do we maintain legacies of queer and radical vision, on the occasion of an exhibition by William S. Burroughs. Panelists: Ira Silverberg, Andrew Durbin , Neil Bartlett, OBE, Kathelin Gray. William S. Burroughs was a seer. Using new forms of writing for his visionary social satire, Naked Lunch, he altered the course of letters, foresaw the future of the planet and its inhabitants, and was censored in the U.S. upon publication in 1959. In a career that spanned more than fifty years, he continually broke boundaries, and moved into new forms including painting, film, musical collaborations, and acting. Burroughs and his work retain an ongoing influence nearly thirty years after his death. How do legacies of queer and outsider artists help navigate the daunting challenges and opportunities of the present moment? About Ira Silverberg Ira Silverberg has been the Editor in Chief of Grove Press, the co-founder of High Risk Books, an imprint of Serpent's Tail, and the Literature Director of the National Endowment for the Arts. At present, Silverberg is a consultant to arts organisations, funders, and publishers of literary magazines and presses. He maintains an editorial practice, teaches at the Columbia University MFA Writing Program, is a Reiki Master and Theta Healer, and is at work on a memoir. He lives in Bellport, NY. About Andrew Durbin Andrew Durbin is the author of two novels, MacArthur Park (2017) and Skyland (2020). His fiction, criticism, and poetry have appeared in The Believer, BOMB, Boston Review, The New York Review of Books, The London Review of Books, The Paris Review, and Triple Canopy. His biography of Peter Hujar and Paul Thek is forthcoming from FSG and Granta in April 2026. He is the editor-in-chief of frieze and lives in London. About Neil Vivian Bartlett, OBE Neil Bartlett has been making rule-breaking theatre and performance since 1983. After a controversial early career, he was appointed Artistic Director of the Lyric Hammersmith in London in 1994; since leaving the Lyric in 2005, major cultural producers he has worked for include the National, the Abbey in Dublin, the Bristol Old Vic , the Manchester Royal Exchange, the Edinburgh International, Manchester International, Brighton, Aldeburgh and Holland Festivals, the Wellcome Foundation and Tate Britain. Neil is also an acclaimed author, with numerous novels, plays, adaptations and translations to his name. His most recent novel, Address Book, was published by Inkandescent in 2021 – and his very first novel, Ready to Catch Him Should He Fall (1990) , has just been republished by Profile as a Serpents Tail Classic. Throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s Bartlett was also busy as an activist, speaking at the Sex and the State conference in Toronto in 1985, working behind the scenes on London’s first International AIDS Day (1987), working on the campaign against Clause 28, and appearing at benefits and rallies everywhere from the Piccadilly Theatre to Trafalgar Square, Hyde Park and the Albert Hall. Doors open at 2:30 pm. Discussion Starts 3:00 pm. This event will take place in the Theatre on the second floor and has no disabled access.
