Michel Khleifi's FERTILE MEMORY (1980) – A Landmark of Palestinian Cinema | Philosophical Research Society

Michel Khleifi's FERTILE MEMORY (1980) – A Landmark of Palestinian Cinema | Philosophical Research Society

Jul 31, 2025 (UTC-7)
City of Los Angeles
Arts Film
As part of their July series "US Tour," 7th House is proud to present a rare screening of Palestinian filmmaker Michel Khleifi 's gorgeous, meditative, and deeply affecting landmark film FERTILE MEMORY (1980). The sole film in 7th House's series not set on American soil, it nevertheless reverberates with our nation's contemporary impact abroad. The first full length film to be shot within the disputed Palestinian West Bank "Green Line," FERTILE MEMORY is the feature debut of Khleifi, acclaimed director of the Cannes Film Festival triumph, WEDDING IN GALILEE . Lyrically blending both documentary and narrative elements , Khleifi skillfully and lovingly crafts a portrait of two Palestinian women whose individual struggles both define and transcend the politics that have torn apart their homes and their lives. Grandmother Romia fights an unending legal battle with the Zionist authorities who confiscated her ancestral land soon after the Israeli occupation in 1947. With her family scattered all over the globe while she works in an Israeli factory, Romia doggedly maintains a dignity and passion that for her are the difference between mere subsistence and tenacious survival. Sahar Khalifeh, a divorced novelist and young mother living in the West Bank, struggles to maintain a modern role for herself within her increasingly intolerant occupation community. Representing both contemporary Arab womanhood and vanguard Palestinian conscience, Sahar must balance the changes in her world after the Six Day War with the changes in herself after achieving personal emancipation. With painterly flair, Khleifi elevates the everyday details of Romia's and Sahar's lives to a timelessness as irresistible as the hauntingly beautiful desert landscape they fight for. Whether in a tearful lullaby or a sensuously performed lover's lament, the women of FERTILE MEMORY lend tender and powerful voices to their people's chorus of outrage. Michel Khleifi's poetic and powerful film puts a distinctively feminine expression on the ordinarily violent and male dominated face of Palestinian resistance. Dir. Michel Khleifi , 1980, 99 mins, Palestine, Arabic w/ English subtitles, Unrated, Color, Digital. Kenneth Anger’s Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome: Film as Magical Ritual — A Presentation by Brian Butler Co-presented by the Philosophical Research Society's 7th House Screenings, the Kenneth Anger Estate, and Los Angeles Filmforum. Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome is more than a film. It is a cinematic ritual that merges Aleister Crowley’s Aeon with Hollywood’s occult underground. Conceived by Kenneth Anger in the early 1950s and reworked over decades, it summoned the haunted glamour of Marjorie Cameron, Curtis Harrington, Renata Druks , and other lost avatars of the Babalon current. Following the overwhelming response to KENNETH ANGER'S LUCIFER RISING: THE OCCULT SAGA OF A CURSED FILM at PRS in April, Brian Butler — artist, occultist, and official representative of the Kenneth Anger Estate — returns to reveal the hidden mythic currents behind Pleasure Dome. Drawing on two decades of research and first-hand connection, Butler brings rare insights into the tangled legacy of this work : from writing one of the earliest major essays on Cameron (Disinformation’s Book of Lies), to a decade-long friendship with Curtis Harrington, to visiting the house where the film was shot and working closely with Kenneth Anger to restore his lost 1958 three-screen version, which he premiered to a sold-out crowd at the Max Linder Panorama in Paris in 2015. Part screening, part ritual transmission, this presentation features a rare 16mm reversal print from the Kenneth Anger Estate archive and invites you to step inside a magickal operation disguised as cinema — an initiatory vision that still flickers through underground culture today. Dir. Kenneth Anger, 1954, 38 mins, Unrated (Adult Audiences), 16mm film. Special thanks to Los Angeles Filmforum for 16mm projection. Cultural Experiences
When Japan’s Tokugawa Shogunate took power in 1603, it ushered in a transformative era of peace and economic prosperity that saw vibrant urban centers like Edo (present-day Tokyo) flourish as never before. While the Edo period is celebrated for its spectacular art, particularly the woodblock prints known as ukiyo- e, it also fostered remarkable innovations including a dynamic urban food culture. This August, as a special complement to our current NEO-JAPONISM exhibition , travel back through time to discover the rich history of Edo cuisine and the artists that immortalized it, while sampling authentic dishes from the period. As an expert in both Edo-period cuisine and ukiyo-e , guest speaker Ukiyo Kuruma— acclaimed Japanese historical novelist and member of the International Ukiyo-e Society—will lead a talk on the fascinating intersection of food and art in Edo. Among her best-selling works, Kurumahas written seven books about Tsutaya Jūzaburō, the famous publisher who helped popularize many ukiyo-e artists, and has also published books on Edo-period cuisine and recipes. Drawing from her extensive research into metropolitan Edo lifestyles, she'll reveal the stories behind legendary works by Hokusai, Utamaro, and Hiroshige, showing how these iconic artists captured the city life around them from urban landscapes, to entertainment, to a bustling food scene. She’ll also explore how Japanese cuisine evolved during this period, with new preparations, flavors, and dishes becoming popular in urban centers, leaving a lasting influence on Japanese food today. Following the presentation, experience an authentic tasting of traditional Edo-period inspired cuisine that brings the past to life prepared by Chef Kazuma Yamasaki. Sample delicate shiraae (tofu and vegetables with sesame and white miso paste), expertly prepared oshizushi (pressed sushi), and seasonal tempura—dishes that allow you to taste history while connecting classic ukiyo-e art with the actual culinary traditions they celebrated. Join us for an exclusive rare window into how people tasted and savored life in old Edo. Program Schedule * Subject to change 10:00 AM | Doors Open 10:30 AM | Talk by Guest Speaker 11:30 AM – 1:00 PM | Tasting Experience Spotlight on Edo Period Cuisine *Concept Images Photo credits for Shiraae and Irizake Tamago: © Edo Culinary Culture Institute Chef Kazuma Yamasaki will be the chef preparing all dishes featured in the program, bringing his deep-rooted expertise and passion for the sea to every plate. Awaji Island, located in the Seto Inland Sea, has long been a hub for both commercial and local fishing and is known for its rich and enduring fishing culture. Chef Yamasaki hails from a family with a 200-year fishing legacy on the island. As the owner of Fisherman’s Table and with more than two decades of hands-on fishing experience, he channels this heritage into his culinary craft, celebrating the flavors and traditions of his family’s hometown. Member of the International Ukiyo-e Society. After graduating from Osaka University of Arts, Ukiyo Kuruma started her career as an art director. She studied scenario writing under great film director Kaneto Shindo to achieve her long-cherished dream of becoming a writer. Following her nomination as a finalist in the Japan Scenario Grand Prix, Ukiyo won the first prize in the Scenario Writer Contest in 2005. Her biography of Fudeko Ishii, a pioneering welfare activist in the Meiji Period, was made into a movie in 2007, starring actress Takako Tokiwa. Ukiyo further developed her career in Japanese historical writing. Her 2014 best-seller Tsutaju no Oshie was the first novel to feature Tsutaya Jūzaburō, the protagonist of this year's NHK Taiga Drama UNBOUND . She has published seven books about him to date. In addition to her historical publications, her deep interest in the lifestyles of metropolitan Edo (the former name of Tokyo) has inspired her to publish books on Edo-period cuisine and recipes. Another specialty of Ukiyo Kuruma is ukiyo-e —Japanese wood block prints that were very popular during the Edo period (1603-1868). With her wide knowledge of the Edo culture, she gives lectures and seminars at adult colleges, focusing on ukiyo-e that depict the everyday lives of people during that time, including kabuki actors, sumo wrestlers, beautiful women, and ordinary people. Ukiyo is particularly interested in the fact that ukiyo-e prints had a decisive influence on European Impressionists and Post-Impressionists, including Édouard Manet, Claude Monet, Paul Cézanne and Vincent van Gogh. The eccentric compositions and unconventional techniques of ukiyo-e artists greatly astonished Europeans at the time, who were used to traditional, realistic paintings. Ukiyo is engaged in other traditional Japanese arts, including haiku (short poems), kouta (ballads sung to shamisen , a traditional instrument), tea ceremony, and flower arrangement. In 2024, Ukiyo opened an Edo-style rental kitchen studio called Ukiyo's Kitchen and broadcasts videos.
