This year's Biennial will be curated by Marie-Anne McQuay, with the theme of "Bedrock", and will be held from June 7 to September 14, 2025. Ugo Rondinone: Liverpool Mountain | Tate Liverpool
Oct 23, 2018–Sep 6, 2028 (UTC)
Liverpool
Liverpool Mountain is Swiss-artist Ugo Rondinone’s first public artwork in the UK and the first of its kind in Europe. Inspired by naturally occurring Hoodoos (spires or pyramids of rock) and the art of meditative rock balancing, this 10-metre high sculpture stands within Mermaid Courtyard, outside Tate Liverpool on the Royal Albert Dock Liverpool. It consists of coloured rocks, stacked vertically which seem to defy gravity.
This outdoor sculpture marks the 10th anniversary of Liverpool European Capital of Culture, the 20th anniversary of Liverpool Biennial and the 30th anniversary of Tate Liverpool.
Commissioned by Liverpool Biennial and Tate Liverpool as part of the Liverpool 2018 events programme with support from Royal Albert Dock Liverpool.
Poetry Reading: Chris McCabe and Nine Arches Press | Open Eye Gallery
Sep 7, 2025 (UTC+0)
Liverpool
Chris McCabe reads live for the Liverpool launch of his new book Hedonism. He will be joined by publisher Jane Commane from Nine Arches Press, one of the UK’s leading independent poetry publishers. The event gives a chance to hear McCabe and Commane in conversation, exploring the creative process of editing and sharing insights into how a book is made. Hedonism presents a carnival of characters including Bez from Happy Mondays, Jorge Louis Borges and a medieval pilgrim on a journey to buy a PlayStation, in McCabe’s sixth and most daring collection. Part-written in Scouse dialect and invented languages, Hedonism offsets the comic with the elegiac in a haunting and polyphonic work exploring the intersection of grief, place, memory and imagination. About Chris McCabe: Chris McCabe’s work spans artforms and genres including poetry, fiction, non-fiction, drama and visual art. His work has been shortlisted for the Ted Hughes Award and the Republic of Consciousness Prize. His most recent poetry collection, The Triumph of Cancer is a Poetry Book Society Recommendation and he is the editor of several anthologies including Poems from the Edge of Extinction: An Anthology of Poetry in Endangered Languages and The New Concrete: Visual Poetry in the 21st Century (with Victoria Bean). His novels are Dedalus and Mud. He is working on an epic series of psychogeographical prose books documenting the lost poets buried in London’s Victorian cemeteries, the latest of which is Buried Garden which was chosen as a White Review Book of the Year in 2022. His latest book is Dreamt by Ghosts published by Tenement Press. Image: Chris McCabe

Created by Armstrong Dance, with original new music from Golden Globe-nominated composer Brian Byrne (Heartbeat of Home), Celtic Throne—Psalter of Ireland is guaranteed to be an experience unlike any other! Celtic Throne reflects the wide-ranging talents and interests of its creators and dancers. First and foremost, it’s an Irish dance show, with plenty of the fancy footwork and formidable stomps made world-famous by iconic shows like Riverdance, Lord of the Dance and Heartbeat of Home. “We adore these shows; they are an inspiration,” says director Brad Macdonald. “We wouldn’t be doing this if these amazing productions hadn’t blazed the trail for us. But Celtic Throne II is totally unique—we are blazing our own trail!” Watching beautiful, happy children, some as young as 7 and 8, dancing and playing music will melt your heart. Sensational gymnastics and martial arts will have you on the edge of your seat and remind you of watching the Olympics. Our live musicians electrify even the most reserved audiences, transporting them to a cozy Irish pub. The dance and music are enhanced by stunning costumes, an elaborate set, sensational lighting and special effects, and dramatic video storytelling on a gigantic, state-of-the-art LED screen. “Imagine taking a classic Irish dance show and blending it with a West End musical and a Hollywood movie,” says Macdonald. “This is what we have done with Celtic Throne—Psalter of Ireland. You won’t find better value for your money—it’s three experiences in one!” Our dancers range in age from 5 to 25. An Evening with Roxanne de Bastion at Waterstones Liverpool! | 12 College Ln
Jun 26, 2025 (UTC+1)
Liverpool
We are delighted to welcome Roxanne de Bastion to Liverpool to celebrate the paperback release of
The Piano Player of Budapest
!
All future, freedom and success lay ahead of young pianist Stephen de Bastion in 1930s Hungary. Life whirled headily around cocktails, romance, applause and the buzz of Budapest late into the night. Then, 1939. Stephen's world disintegrates and this becomes a story of his brutal descent, of his time in labour camps, of Mauthausen and Gunskirchen and the unimaginable horrors he endured during the Holocaust as a man of Jewish descent. Yet, this is also a tale of extraordinary escape ... and the piano, waiting for him.
The same piano that Roxanne de Bastion, his granddaughter, inherits when her father dies. It has been in the family over one hundred years but it is only when, deep in grief, she discovers a cassette recording of Stephen, that the astonishing history of the piano, the man and her family begins to unravel. Weaving together his original recordings, unpublished memoirs, letters and documents, Roxanne sings out her grandfather's story of music and hope, lost and found. Luminous and profoundly moving, this book captures the great spirit of one man in the face of darkness and the hope that echoes down through generations.
