Exhibitions
See three awe-inspiring sculptures by an American artist who transforms tires to explore environmental concerns. For over four decades, Chakaia Booker has cut, coiled, and contorted tires, sculpting the industrial waste into spectacular abstract forms. Booker uses discarded tires both as a commentary on cultural histories and experiences and as a sustainable practice. Salvaging the tires avoids their disposal into landfills, where they trap and emit methane gas. Her works encourage us to consider the history of the material of tires as well as the effect rubber can have on our future. Three monumental wall relief sculptures—Acid Rain (2001), Echoes in Black (Industrial Cicatrization) (1996), and It’s So Hard to Be Green (2000)—are presented. Each sculpture spans 20 to 21 feet wide and features a mass of curled bands of tire rubber, some interspersed with spiky shards, coiled strips, and loops made from inner tubes. Booker’s six-part photogravure series Foundling Warrior Quest (II 21C) (2010) showcases the artist as a mythical being foraging in a harsh, industrial landscape.

Art history isn’t linear. Artists mix and remix references, finding inspiration across time. When contemporary artist Rozeal. began painting afro.died, T. in 2011 in her studio just outside Washington, DC, she didn’t have Titian’s Venus with a Mirror in mind. Paul Cezanne wasn’t thinking about Titian’s Ranuccio Farnese when he painted Boy in a Red Waistcoat in 19th-century France. Yet these works share striking visual similarities with Titian’s 16th-century paintings. Back and Forth illuminates unexpected connections between these four works and invites us to see them in new ways.

Little Beasts: Art, Wonder, and the Natural World | National Gallery of Art

May 18–Nov 2, 2025 (UTC-5)
Washington D.C.
Exhibitions
Experience the wonders of nature through the eyes of an artist. Look closely at works of art that depict insects and other animals, as well as real specimens. Art played a key role at the dawn of natural history in 16th and 17th century Europe. Advances in science and technology, trade, and colonial expansion enabled naturalists to study previously unknown and overlooked insects, animals, and other beestjes, or "little beasts." Artists such as Joris Hoefnagel and Jan van Kessel helped deepen and spread knowledge of these creatures through highly detailed and playful works that inspired generations of printmakers, painters, decorative artists, and naturalists. A delight for all ages, this exhibition uniquely showcases nearly 75 of these paintings, prints, and drawings, as well as specimens and taxidermy from the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History. Learn about the rich exchanges between artists and naturalists that have fueled our fascination with creatures big and small on Earth. Watch a new film by artist Dario Robleto to see how the intersection of art and science continues to inspire us.

Photography and the Black Arts Movement, 1955–1985 | The National Gallery

Sep 21, 2025–Jan 4, 2026 (UTC-5)
Washington D.C.
Exhibitions
The first exhibition to consider photography’s impact on a cultural and aesthetic movement that celebrated Black history, identity, and beauty. As Black Americans continued their struggle for political liberation and self-determination in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s, a group of artists, poets, musicians, playwrights, and filmmakers united around a new approach—art. Using creative mediums to express messages of Black empowerment and advance social justice, their efforts became known as the Black Arts Movement, often considered the cultural arm of the Black Power Movement. Photography was central to the movement, attracting all kinds of artists—from street photographers and photojournalists to painters and graphic designers. This expansive exhibition presents 150 examples by over 100 artists. Explore the radical vision shaped by generations of artists including Billy Abernathy, Romare Bearden, Kwame Brathwaite, Roy DeCarava, Doris Derby, Emory Douglas, Barkley Hendricks, Barbara McCullough, Betye Saar, and Ming Smith. See how they both shaped and documented the Black Arts Movement.

Latinas Report Breaking News is a bilingual exhibition featuring stories from Latina journalists to show how Spanish-language television gave voice and visibility to a broad segment of the American public and how these journalists advocate for Spanish-speaking communities and navigate the fast-paced, ever-changing pace of breaking news. In the approximately 1,000-square-foot gallery, visitors will explore broadcast journalism through the work of journalists such as Ilia Calderón, Dunia Elvir, Marilys Llanos, Gilda Mirós, Lori Montenegro, Maria Elena Salinas, and Blanca Rosa Vílchez. A multimedia piece will illustrate these women's accounts as eyewitnesses to important histories like the Vietnam War, 9/11, and the Black Lives Matter protests, as well as issues of cultural and political significance to local Latinx communities that are sometimes overlooked by English-language news. Working in the characteristic fast-paced, ever-changing environment of news production, these women shaped the narrative of major historical events while collaborating with their local and national Latinx communities to provide news coverage that meets their needs.

From the largest mammals to the smallest insects, the animal world has always inspired writers and illustrators. Since ancient times, humans have projected character traits onto animals. In medieval Europe, animals became subjects of a new literary genre of religious stories. At the same time, a growing interest in science made artists concerned with anatomic accuracy. See how illustrators approached the same creatures from different perspectives during this period of rich development. You’ll find early scientific drawings, illustrated fables, and drawing manuals from the 16th to 18th centuries—all rarely on view.

One Day. One System. Game Over for Your Competition. It's Time to Level the Playing Field with AI Listen. Are you tired of losing contracts to bigger competitors? Spending weeks on proposals that don't win? Feeling overwhelmed by the complexity of government contracting? That’s about to change. On July 26th, we’ll show you exactly how to transform your GovCon business with AI. HERE'S THE TRUTH NOBODY WANTS YOU TO KNOW: Big contractors have 50-person proposal teams. You have 2. They spend $100K on market research. You have Google. They wine and dine contracting officers. You're lucky to get an email response. But here's what they DON'T have: The ability to move fast. The hunger to innovate. And after July 26th... the AI playbook that levels the field. THE PROBLEM: You're working 80-hour weeks writing proposals that lose to companies 100x your size. You're chasing opportunities that were wired for someone else 6 months ago. You're competing on price because you don't know how to compete on value. And you're doing it all manually like it's 1995. THE SOLUTION: One day with Desmond Brown (Retired VA Executive Director OSDBU who built MULTI-MILLION dollar programs) and Alicia Lyttle (The woman teaching Fortune 500s how to use AI). Desmond A. Brown Desmond A. Brown is one of the nation’s most credentialed authorities in government contracting, holding the highest levels of certification in federal procurement and acquisition strategy . With unmatched experience in both the public and private sectors, Desmond is a retired senior executive who spent decades shaping federal acquisition policy and practice. He served at the highest levels of government, including as Executive Director of the Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization (OSDBU) at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs , where he oversaw billions of dollars in procurement opportunities for small, minority-owned, and veteran-owned businesses. His federal leadership journey includes a key role at the U.S. Office of Personnel Management , and in the private sector, Desmond held leadership roles at Lockheed Martin , where he contributed to mission-critical defense and technology initiatives. Desmond is widely respected for his ability to bridge complex government systems with real-world small business outcomes . His work has empowered thousands of business owners to win federal contracts, scale strategically, and navigate the compliance landscape with confidence. Now retired from federal service, Desmond is a sought-after speaker, AI strategist, and branding advisor. He trains government contractors and entrepreneurs around the globe. Known for his powerful blend of procurement expertise and forward-thinking innovation, Desmond helps others thrive at the intersection of technology, storytelling, and federal opportunity . His mission? To equip underserved founders and fast-moving entrepreneurs to win at warp speed in the age of AI. Alicia Lyttle Alicia Lyttle is internationally recognized as “The Queen of AI” for her knack at turning cutting-edge artificial-intelligence tools into real-world wins for entrepreneurs and government teams alike. As CEO of AI InnoVision. Alicia has spent over a decade helping small businesses fast-track growth by automating everything from proposal writing to market research. A sought-after speaker on the federal stage, Alicia has delivered keynote sessions and hands-on labs for the National Contract Management Association (NCMA), multiple federal and state events and agency innovation days. Her workshops consistently earn reviews for turning “tech overwhelm” into doable, step-by-step systems that boost win rates and slash admin time. Whether she’s guiding 8(a) startups to their first prime award or training contracting officers on generative-AI best practices, Alicia’s mission is the same: demystify AI and make it the great equalizer for anyone ready to compete at warp speed. Expect energy, clarity, and a library of prompt hacks you can apply before you leave the event! Together, they've cracked the code on using AI to win government contracts. HERE'S WHAT HAPPENS IN 6 HOURS: 10:00 AM - Your Competition is Writing Proposals You're Learning to Generate Them in 15 Minutes The $50K proposal secret (how to write proposals that look like you hired BCG) Copy/paste templates that win (tested on $100M+ in contracts) The "Compliance Bomb" method (never miss a requirement again) 11:30 AM - Your Competition is Googling Opportunities You're Building an AI That Finds Them For You The "Opportunity Sniper" system (find wired contracts before they're wired) How to know what agencies want before they post it The 3-click competitive intelligence system 1:15 PM - Your Competition is Guessing at Pricing You're Using AI to Calculate Price-to-Win The "Price Psychic" formula (know their budget before they tell you) When to no-bid (and save $10K in wasted effort) 2:30 PM - Your Competition is Cold Calling Partners You're AI-Vetting the Perfect Team in Minutes The "Partner Picker" matrix (find partners who actually perform) Script templates that get Fortune 500s to team with you The partnership terms that protect you (learned the hard way) 3:30 PM - Your Competition Goes Home You Leave With a Business-Transforming System Your personal 30-day implementation plan The "Monday Morning" checklist (what to do first) Access to our private community of AI-powered contractors WHO THIS IS FOR: ✅ You're sick of losing to the "usual suspects" ✅ You know AI is the future but don't know where to start ✅ You want to 10x your output without 10x your staff ✅ You're ready to win real contracts, not just "relationships" WHO THIS IS NOT FOR: ❌ People looking for "get rich quick" schemes ❌ Anyone who thinks "good enough" is good enough ❌ Contractors who aren't serious about growth ❌ People who won't bring a laptop and do the work THE MATH: Your last proposal cost you: 80 hours of time ($8,000 at $100/hour) 2 weeks of opportunity cost Stress, coffee, and probably your weekend After this workshop: Same proposal in 8 hours Better quality than your competition Actually win the damn thing ROI on Day 1: 10x ROI after your first win: 100x+ REA L RESULTS FROM REAL CONTRACTORS: "Cut acquisition process time by 50%—team now using AI daily." – Shannon Jackson, Executive Director, OSDBU, HHS "Transformed our approach to contract management—AI now core to daily ops." – Britney Jenkins, Contracting Officer, U.S. Department of Defense "Boosted KPIs across targeted business units after custom AI series." – Tracey Grace, President & CEO, IBEX IT Business Experts HERE'S EXACTLY WHAT YOU GET: During the Workshop: 6 hours of pure implementation (no boring lectures) The exact AI prompts that win contracts Templates worth $50K+ in consulting fees Hands-on setup of your AI toolkit Real-time feedback on your actual opportunities THE INVESTMENT: Look, we could charge $15,000 for this and it would still be a steal. Big contractors pay consultants $500/hour for worse advice. However, I want to turn this industry on its head. Early Bird (Before July 12): $397 Regular Price: $497 Day-of Registration: $597 (if seats remain) GUARANTEE: We'll refund your entire registration fee if you don't save at least 10 hours on your next proposal or identify at least 3 new opportunities within 30 days. That's how confident we are that this works. THE CATCH: Only 30 seats left. Why? Because we work with you. This isn't some hotel ballroom with 500 people and a PowerPoint. This is sleeves-rolled-up, laptop-open, let's-build-your-business work. Last workshop sold out in 6 days. TWO CHOICES: Choice 1: Keep doing what you're doing. Work harder. Hope things change. Cultural Experiences
Class Description: CMYK Screen Printing is a great way to reproduce a color image and add your flavor! We will divide a color photograph into its cyan, magenta, yellow, and black layers, and screen print them in succession to reassemble the image on paper. Participants are also encouraged to experiment with the process by skipping layers or blocking out areas to create unique prints! Session Details: During this workshop, we will learn how the image is exposed on the screen, how to register an image for screen printing, and how to print the image in four colors through the four screens. We will also discuss how a photographic image needs to be prepared by converting it to half-tone dots in order to be exposed onto a screen. What You Will Learn: -The basics of how screen printing works, and how the image is exposed on a screen -How to print images on a mesh screen -How photographic images are converted into half-tone dots to recreate tonal and color ranges when exposed on and printed through a screen -How the layers of a screen printed are registered together so that each layer lines up when the image is reassembled -How skipping a color layer or blocking areas out can dramatically alter your image to create unique versions of the print What to Bring: Yourself! Paper, inks, screens, and squeegees will be provided for use during the workshop. While we’re using water-based inks, it is highly recommended that you wear clothes that can get dirty. Also, since we’ll be on our feet quite a bit as we move from screen to screen and to hang up our prints, wear comfortable shoes! About the Instructor: Beth is an alum of the Corcoran College of Art + Design, and has been printing in Washington, DC for over 15 years. She specializes in non-linear screen printing, which focuses more on experimentation and manipulating the surface of the print to create varied editions, rather than executing a replicable design. Beth shares her knowledge and love of printing by creating collaborative prints with other artists and inviting people to join her in making their own designs.
