We are excited to present these two dance styles to you and look forward to having you join us! look forward to having you Sekou Heru - House 10 am - 12 pm Class Description: This class introduces the Rhythm Metrics House Dance Method, a dynamic approach to movement and expression. You’ll explore foundational footwork, body mechanics, and awareness techniques designed to help you move with intention and flow. Through nonverbal guidance, you’ll tap into the essence of house dance as a powerful interactive language. By the end, you’ll walk away with practical foundational moves you can revisit and make your own, using your body as a true instrument of expression. Alexis Mora Blanco - Cuban Salsa Casino 1 pm - 3 pm Class Description: Casino, a popular and traditional Cuban social ballroom dance that emerged in the late 1950s, has transcended borders as part of the cultural flow driven by globalization and the worldwide phenomenon of salsa. Often categorized as "Cuban salsa style," it has evolved from obscurity and indifference to becoming nationally and internationally recognized as a genuine dance expression. Derived from rhythms such as Danzón, Cuban Son, Mambo, Danzonete, and other Cuban genres, Casino is a partner dance characterized by circular movements, rich in flavor with hip and shoulder motions, and rapid footwork. It is often blended with Rumba and Afro-Cuban movements, adding even more rhythm and vibrancy to this unique style. His experience in the House dance culture goes back to the late 1980s. He gained knowledge of the culture dancing in clubs like The Tunnel, The World, The Original Sound Factory, Red Zone, Kilimanjaro’s, The Octagon, Base Line, The Choice, Shelter, the legendary Club Zanzibar, and Club 88. His first love was B-boying. In high school, he attended Mercer County School of the Arts and studied modern dance. In 1993, Sekou started studying Capoeira Angola with Mestre João Grande at the Capoeira Academy in NYC. He went on to fuse his breaking and modern dance styles with hip hop and house dance. Sekou has worked with Gwen Guthrey, toured with Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, and can be seen in videos with Aretha Franklin, MC Lyte, Clubland, Pet Shop Boys, Foxy Brown, and Jay Z.  Sekou was a featured dancer in the movie Marcy X with Damon Wayans, can be seen in the dance scenes on Spike Lee’s The 25th Hour, and is seen in Brown Sugar starring Taye Diggs and Sanaa Lathan. He has toured in Germany with German rapper Tony Cottura, and has traveled several times to Japan for the annual premier Dance Delight event as a guest judge and featured dancer with the group Dance Fusion, of which he is a founding member. He was a part of the opening act for Cece Peniston’s Japan tour, and also opened for Cool C's Let Me Clear My Throat in his Japan performance.  He was featured in Japan’s "woofin" magazine as one of NYC’s top dancers. Sekou toured the USA with Fred Ho and The Afro Asian Ensemble in the Martial Arts stage show Voice of the Dragon. In 2005, Sekou choreographed the Dance Dance video for Fall Out Boy that went #1 in the country and won a Best Video Award at the MTV VMAs. While Sekou is from Trenton, New Jersey, he was compelled to travel back and forth to New York City to experience the club culture in its glory years, and in 1989, he made New York City his home. Over the years, Sekou’s mentality catalogued a wide variety of dance styles, various genres of music, and people from different social classes. Like many others who gathered, the common goal was to experience freedom of movement and a love of music. Alexis Mora Blanco Through his commitment and determination, Alexis made many achievements in his professional dance career. In a well-known salsa competition that was filmed for TV, he placed 1st after dancing in a 1-hour long competition for salsa. He then went on to dance in the carnival in Havana and won second place out of 1000 dancers. Alexis was highly sought after by many dance companies and won 1st place yet again in another competition, this time in the Festival de Raices Africanas Wemilere 2004, the most important and recognized folklore festival in Cuba at the time. Alexis is one of the few certified Latin dance instructors in Western Canada, receiving his certification from one of the original dancers who developed the fundamental steps and movements of salsa in Cuba, which then spread to the world. Alexis made the journey north to bring his love of dance and unique style to Canada, and has since performed and taught at many international dance events, including Cancun, Los Angeles, Havana, and all around Canada. He is well-versed in many dance forms, including Reggaeton, Salsa, Merengue, Bachata, Mambo, Afro-Cuban, Rumba, Son, Pilon, Cha Cha Cha, Hip Hop, As Well As The Zumba Program.
