We’re back for another season of Family Open Studio fun!! After a successful winter’s worth of child-led creativity, we are excited to bring you another season of material-oriented sessions. Participants are free to come up with their own ideas, and work with the materials provided to bring those ideas to life. Grownups are encouraged to assist, especially with trickier tasks like using a glue gun, and to tune into their children’s creative inner worlds. Every other week, we’ll roll out a new material to try, with instructors on hand to help you come up with a good plan. Make sure you take a stroll through our current exhibitions to get inspired! Stop by the Take & Make cart if you’re looking for some free art supplies, or for somewhere to drop off supplies you’re no longer using. Smudgy, saturated, glorious colour! Get into this irresistible medium that melts into the paper with gentle pressure. Mixing colours is always fun to try, too! Please Note: This program is meant for families to work together on art projects, so all children attending must be accompanied by an adult. Drop in any time between 1-4pm in the Family Studio. Space is limited to about 30 folks, and is available on a first-come, first-served basis. While in the studio, please be mindful of other families wishing to participate! While you're here, you can check out our exhibitions and look for treasures on our Take + Make Cart! This cart, located just outside the Family Studio, is full of previously-loved art supplies. Take what you like and leave what you can, we're always accepting donations of art tools and supplies you're not using anymore. Information Source: Art Gallery of Burlington | eventbrite

Radical Darkroom: Cyanolumen Prints | Art Gallery of Burlington

Jun 25, 2025 (UTC-5)
Burlington
Arts
Age: 18+ Dat: Wednesday June 25, 2025 Time: 6:30 - 9:30 PM Cost: M $60 and NM $65 Instructor: Sonya de Laat Lumen printing and Cyanotype are two of the earliest photographic processes, each offering a unique way to capture light, shadow, and time. This workshop combines these two techniques, using both the AGB darkroom and natural sunlight to create striking, archival photographic images that blend the soft, ephemeral qualities of Lumen printing with the deep, rich blues of Cyanotype. Using a combination of traditional darkroom techniques and alternative photographic processes, you’ll experiment with objects that cast distinctive silhouettes, refract light, or create suggestive shadows. We’ll explore the effects of translucent and graphic materials such as fabrics, flowers, stencils, and glassware—alongside any objects you choose to bring—to create evocative, emotional, and dynamic cameraless images. Through this hands-on and playful approach, you’ll gain essential skills in analogue photography, including an understanding of the chemistry of light-sensitive materials, darkroom safety, and the interplay of exposure and development. This workshop is perfect for those looking to explore historical photographic processes in an experimental and expressive way. About the Instructor: Sonya de Laat is a Hamilton-based photographer drawn to the medium’s many creative, social, and political potentials. After years of working and experimenting with different digital photography treatments, she has found a renewed sense of creative flow through exploration of nineteenth century photography techniques and alternative photography methods. She is an active member of the Latow Photographers Guild, housed within the Art Gallery of Burlington, currently acting as the guild’s vice president. Sonya has a Diploma in Photography from Algonquin College, and degrees in Anthropology (McMaster) and Media Studies (Western), where she focused on developing professional photography skills and studied histories of humanitarian photography. When not engaging in her creative photography practice, she works as a Research Associate at McMaster University and a Historical Interpreter at Whitehern Historical House & Garden for the City of Hamilton. ATTIRE: Your clothing may get messy from the materials and media utilized in your class so please dress appropriately or bring an apron. Also, closed-toe shoes are mandatory. ALLERGIES OR SPECIAL NEEDS? Important - Notify us on your registration if the student has an allergy, health concerns, or a learning exception that could impact participation in the class. We would like to remind you that we are a nut-free facility. Information Source: Art Gallery of Burlington | eventbrite
