Sonder Winter Gravel Series | Keswick | Alpkit Keswick

Nov 2, 2025 (UTC+1)
Keswick
Cycling Sports & Fitness
During the winter months, even the most hardy and adventurous off-road riders can sometimes need a little extra encouragement to get out and pedal! Whether that be the promise of tasty snacks in a warm shop at the end of a muddy spin round the local trails, or swapping adventure tales with the rider next to you to take your mind off your numb fingers...we've got you covered with our Sonder Winter Gravel Series! Each ride will start from one of Alpkit’s flagship stores located in some of the best cycling locations in the UK. Our Keswick ride will be a self-supported ride leaving the store at 10AM, lasting roughly 3-5 hours depending on your speed. A GPX file of the route will be sent out to all participants who have confirmed their booking through Eventbrite, on the Thursday before the event. The route can be completed fast or at your own pace, we encourage those of all abilities to take part and have lots of fun! Just remember, this is a social ride with gravel enthusiasts and you are fully self-supported. Please come equipped with everything you would bring on a solo ride (including a helmet) and be aware that the very nature of being self-supported means you are your own mechanic for this ride, so although we all hope it won't happen... be prepared to fix a puncture by the side of the trail or handle anything else that may occur en route! Also bear in mind that the weather can be changeable at this time of year, so please dress accordingly to the forecast to ensure you stay warm and comfortable for the duration of the event. (We also recommend bringing a spare set of clothes for travelling home as you may get wet and muddy!) Back at Alpkit there will be cakes and weather-specific refreshments (the soup always goes down a treat!) and plenty of time to chat bikes, routes and all things adventure with staff and fellow riders. Tickets will be £7 and all proceeds will be donated to the Alpkit Foundation. Hope to see you there! Information Source: Alpkit | eventbrite

How do children of migrant parents grapple with the multiple, and sometimes contradictory, moral expectations they encounter at home and abroad? What can their practical struggles tell us about the ways they reproduce transnational kinship and experience integration? Join us for a Buffett Book Talk with anthropologist Chelsie Yount on Selective Solidarity: Children and Middle-Class Moralities in Transnational Senegal (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2025), her ethnography of Senegalese households in Paris and Dakar that analyzes ways families negotiate transnational kinship. Yount will share insights into how global inequalities change the ways transnational families negotiate “economic moralities,” or expectations about material obligations. She will detail experiences of family life in global capitalism, focusing on middle-class downward mobility to highlight the ways socioeconomic relations are redefined as resources stretch thin. This event is co-sponsored by the Program of African Studies , part of the Office for Research at Northwestern University. About the author Chelsie Yount is a postdoctoral fellow at Leiden University in the Netherlands. She earned a PhD in anthropology in 2017 at Northwestern University and the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris. Her work in linguistic and economic anthropology provides insights on morality in economic relations, offering an analysis of processes of value creation between global markets and households in Africa. Inside Hai ti Join the Roberta Buffett Institute for a faculty research lunchtime talk series on the first Friday of every month. Faculty members give a half-hour talk intended for a broad, multidisciplinary audience of Northwestern students, faculty, and staff, followed by a conversational Q&A. Lunch is provided beginning at 12:15 p.m. November's Buffett First Friday Lunch, taking place on November 14 due to our fall Buffett Symposium the Friday prior, will feature Buffett Visiting Scholar Roberson Alphonse , head of national news at Le Nouvelliste , Haiti's oldest and largest daily newspaper, and Nathalie Cardichon , an investigative journalist and former leader at several nonprofit agencies in Haiti. Located in the Caribbean, just a 90-minute flight away from the US, Haiti has become understood as a “failed state" and "open-air hell." Between 2024 and 2025, nearly 10,000 people were killed by gangs, and 1.3 million people were forced to flee their homes. Unemployment affects more than 60% of the active population. Half of Haiti's 11 million residents are living in food insecurity. The country faces pressing challenges to restore security, control its border and the flow of weapons and ammunitions from the US, hold general elections, emerge from six years of recession, rebuild the state and foundations for an inclusive economy, and put the well-being of the Haitian people back at the center of public policy. Alphonse and Cardichon will share insights into the paradigm shift the nation needs for successful international cooperation in security, defense, trade, investment, and market access. Please note that 720 University Place is not an ADA-accessible space. Increasing physical access to buildings and facilities is a goal of the University, but not all buildings and venues have been updated. For one evening only, we’ll become a film crew—and a cast. Inspired by the lush excess of Douglas Sirk, the saturated dreamscapes of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, the radical dramas of Rainer Werner Fassbinder, and the flamboyant brilliance of Pedro Almodóvar, we’re going to shoot our very own (somewhat trashy) melodrama. Think bold emotions, extravagant costumes, and dramatic camera angles. Come ready to dress up and become a star—or, if you’d rather stay behind the scenes, we’ll have plenty of roles to fill: lights, sound, props, and production. Come dressed up, or if you can't find anything, we'll bring a collection of outfits. The finished melodrama will premiere the following week at the Dada Cabaret and Christmas Party. Session details Session Lead: Bradley Tuck In Person: Southern Belle, 3, Waterloo Street, Hove The venue is not wheelchair accessible This session is only in person Time: 6:30 pm Doors.
