As a guitarist, Möller has swept three international instrumental music competitions in Europe, and his name is engraved on a metal plaque in the Concert Hall in Amsterdam. Gergiev won the top prizes at the world-class Karajan conducting competition and the All-Union conducting competition in Moscow during his time at the Leningrad Conservatory, and was invited to join the Kirov (now Mariinsky) Theatre as an assistant conductor. On January 12, 1978, he performed as the conductor in Prokofiev's opera War and peace. In 1988, he became the music director of the Mariinsky Theatre and has served as its general director and artistic director from 1996. In December 2023, he was appointed as the general director of the Bolshoi Theatre and co-chair of the music union of the Russian Theatre Union.
