Exhibitions
"Kenji Shiokawa" is the artist's first solo museum exhibition, bringing together more than fifty sculptures created over fifty years (from the 1970s to the 2010s). At the heart of the exhibition are two main categories: meticulously crafted abstract totems in wood carving and mystical box-like installations filled with toys, dried flowers, and stones. The exhibition emphasizes the cross-cultural nature of Shiokawa's work, blending the aesthetics of Japanese wood carving, the installation art style of South Los Angeles, and various faith systems including Candombray, Catholicism, and Zen. Shiokawa possesses a profound understanding of his materials, allowing them to guide his sculptural process, which he likens to archaeology—both requiring patient excavation, discovery, and revelation.
