Front and Centre: Women of the North's Playwriting Symposium At a time of increasing challenges for the arts in Northern Ireland—where funding is shrinking, and a clear arts policy remains absent—female-identifying and non-binary playwrights, particularly those from working-class backgrounds, face even greater barriers. Despite the undeniable talent emerging from this region, including playwrights like Stacey Gregg and Lisa McGee, the lack of main stage productions for their work is striking. This symposium is a call to action. Focusing on playwriting as both craft and career, it will open up vital conversations, explore constructive strategies, and showcase fresh talent. Expect a dynamic mix of staged readings, works in progress, and critical discussions—bringing together emerging playwrights, academics, and industry professionals. Join us for an inspiring day of creative exploration, thought-provoking panels, and open conversation. Whether you're a writer, artist, academic, or theatre enthusiast, your voice is welcome. This event is led by playwright and theatre-maker Karis Kelly in collaboration with the Drama Department at QUB. Register here for the programme of panels and talks. The overview of the schedule is as follows: Friday 23rd May, 1pm-6pm Sarturday 24th May, 11am-2.15pm Sunday 25th May, 11am-5.30pm Refreshments included throughout each day. Please note that tickets for panels and talks are free; you will need to book separately to attend the staged readings and scratch performances for which there is a small charge. 📩 For more information, contact frontandcentreni@gmail.com We are grateful to Belfast City Council and to Queen’s University Belfast for their support for this event. Wretch by Clare Duffy and Grace Kully Wretch is a play about stalking and harassment and the aftershocks that so often come with seeking freedom, but are rarely talked about. Wretch is our call-to-action, our wake up call, and our supportive hug to other victims. This play exposes what harassment can look like in all its subtle forms, how the justice system so often fails survivors, and why support is a necessity for years after. When we say that this is important, we aren’t asking you to believe us. We are telling you. Clare Duffy is an Irish writer and performer across stage and screen. She has most recently been commissioned by BBC Radio 4. She holds an MA from the Seamus Heaney Centre and Queens University Belfast. Grace Kully) is a rare disease advocate. From almost single-handedly creating a black market for movie memorabilia - stuff the studios threw away - to his extravagant parties, his great talent, and his tragic death of AIDS, Friend Of Dorothy celebrates the man, not just his shoes. With a Masters in Musical Theatre Writing from Goldsmiths University London, Gillian moved to Belfast in 2017 and has since written By A Thread, a one man show which received a rehearsed reading in 2023; an original musical, Golden Bricks And Ruby Shoes (music by Patrick Moore) which had a WiP performance in 2019 and received ACNI funding in 2020; and taken part in the BBC’s Hothouse programme in 2021. Natural by Alice Malseed Alice is pregnant. Very pregnant. And like any artist would, she's exploiting this personally life-changing epoch for her research project - Natural. Natural explores the context, mood and ethics of having children within our current climate.Through research, she is looking back at one hundred years of child rearing by zooming in on three generations of women and their supposed 'choice' in this area.At this scratch she is presenting a very raw and rough extract - her, on stage, reading some text. She is using the biography as a starting point to look at the government's obsession with 'hard working families', the rise of pronatalism, trad-wives, and ultimately questioning whether or not women really do have a choice at all.... Alice is a theatre maker, writer and producer based in Belfast. She is currently part of Six In The Attic with I.T.I. As well as theatre, Alice is working on her debut novel Double Sunrise. Arts
Theater
The Wake by Anna Teresa McGrath Directed by Emma Copland Longlisted for the The David MacLennan Award It’s MIMI’S wake, in a rural border town in Northern Ireland. Caught up in getting things correct for the mother she warred with, BRIGID is feeling stressed. Her estranged daughter MARIA has joined her to spend these last few waiting hours, with a woman they both had complicated relationships with. The Wake is darkly comic, but full of heart. It explores the matriarchal relationships in a family experiencing the seismic shock of loss, as they mourn the death of the senior matriarch, MIMI. TRIGGER WARNING: References to self-harm and suicide. Front & Centre are proud to present a series of staged readings featuring plays that have been finalists, shortlisted, or longlisted for major UK and Ireland playwriting awards, but have yet to be programmed in Northern Ireland. Despite their accolades, these works, penned by talented women from the North, have remained under the radar. Plays are living, breathing documents that are written to be performed. For many women of the North, their brilliant, commended plays are sitting in drawers, languishing. Front & Centre is determined to change that! We’ve paired these remarkable writers with accomplished Northern Irish directors, offering audiences a first look at the next generation of female theatre makers from the North. This event has kindly been supported by Queen’s University and Belfast City Council. For other readings in the series: Hello Charlie by Caoimhe Farren Stuff & Things & Junk & Belonging by Carley Magee Please note: Presale will end on the event day at 11:30am. From that point onwards, tickets will only be available on the door, paying by card. Anna McGrath is a writer interested in exploring identity, belonging, and cultural heritage, particularly the experiences of the Irish diaspora. One of Playwrights’ Studio Scotland’s six mentored playwrights in 2024, she has strong ties to both Northern Ireland and Scotland and has collaborated with companies including Provan Hall Trust, The Brunton, East Lothian Council, and Threes Theatre Company in Belfast. Her play The Wake , long-listed for the David MacLennan Award, explores death and the role of the matriarch, while Fallopia Japonica (Arts Council of Northern Ireland) uses dark comedy to challenge stigma around women’s health. She is currently developing Feis , a new play about the Irish dancing scandal. Anna also creates immersive theatre experiences, from site-specific productions at Provan Hall to Lisburn to Lapland , an interactive festive adventure in Northern Ireland. Her play Saltire Rock , commissioned for all thirty-six East Lothian primary schools, explores acceptance and diversity. Across all her work, she blends humour, cultural reflection, and storytelling that sparks conversation and connection. Information Source: Front & Centre Women's Playwriting Symposium | eventbrite

Join us at a local Belfast Coffee house and meet up to other 10 singles looking to meet someone special. This is a non-structured dating event and the premise is simple. Grab a coffee and meet and mingle with the other participants. Our hosts will be there to help with initial introductions and we’ll have some icebreakers and games to help you mix should you need it. FAQ: Where is the venue? Our venues will be within a mile of Belfast City Centre and easy to access for parking and public transport. When you purchase a ticket you’ll be emailed with details of the venue including directions and useful information. Is this speed dating? No – there’s no structured dates. You’ll sit in the same area / table with other singles and chat and meet organically How long does the event last? The event itself will be scheduled for 1. 5 hours but feel free to stay on as long as you want How do I match with someone? We’ll send you a follow up email after the event to ask which participants you’d like to match with. Your choices are discreet. What do I get for my ticket price? We’ll include a coffee and ‘treat’ from a selected menu Will the event be held in a private part of the coffee house? No, however we’ll try to ensure all participants are seated together and will reserve seats/a section of the coffee shop where possible Is there a dress code? Smart casual is best, something you feel comfortable and confident in – think what you would wear to go on a midweek date. Although there is no official dress code at our events. Can I bring a friend? Yes, although they must have purchased a ticket in order to participate otherwise they will be unable to sit with the group Information Source: Ratemydateni | eventbrite

Cornhill Belfast summer school | Kirkpatrick Memorial Presbyterian Church

If God speaks to us from the Bible, how is it that we are not more excited by that? Does every part of the Bible say more or less the same thing or are there things we are missing? Are there right and wrong ways of handling God's word? During Cornhill summer school week, we will be thinking about how the enduring word of God still addresses us today, as we consider some of the basic tools which enable us to understand the Bible and apply it appropriately to our own lives and the lives of others. Andrew Sach, who teaches on the Cornhill Training Course in London, will help us get to grips with God's word, along with Jonny Woodrow, who teaches on the course in Belfast and Moore Casement, who runs Cornhill Belfast. This is an excellent opportunity to gain a greater understanding of the key elements of the Cornhill Training Course and for any who are interested in considering further study at Cornhill, there will be the opportunity to meet with and chat to current Cornhill students during the week.
