2025 New Orleans Carnival: Celebrate Mardi Gras in the Heart of Louisiana | Canal Street

Jan 6–Mar 4, 2025 (UTC-6)ENDED
New Orleans
News
Carnival
In New Orleans, known for its French Quarter, Bourbon Street, Creole cuisine, and cool Dixieland jazz, there's an event that encompasses all of these: Mardi Gras! The 2025 carnival season will be a time of revelry and romance, madness and music, parades and balls, street comedy costumes, and grand private masked balls. Mardi Gras represents a time when all things grand and magnificent come together for an all-encompassing explosion. New Orleans Mardi Gras features everything from the noble to the comical! In the 12 days leading up to Mardi Gras, over 60 parades, hundreds of private parties, balls, and masked balls are held annually in the metro area. It is a legal holiday in New Orleans, where half the city dresses up to watch the other half parade! The unique custom that makes Mardi Gras most distinctive is the "throws"—small items tossed from floats—which turns New Orleans parades into an unparalleled, participatory event. Over a million people line the parade routes, shouting, "Throw me something, mister!" Among the millions of throws, the most popular are items with krewe logos and parade themes, including plastic drinking cups, medallion necklaces, and colorful aluminum coins called doubloons. In the lead-up to Mardi Gras, New Orleans stores sell a variety of carnival costumes, whether glamorous, vintage, or extravagant, and people prepare their festival attire in advance, vying to be the most dazzling on the street! Dazzled by the colorful displays, choosing the official carnival colors of purple, green, and gold is a sure bet, with purple representing justice, green representing faith, and gold representing power. This March, come to New Orleans to fully immerse yourself in the carnival spirit!

JOIN US at The Garden District Book Shop on Wednesday, March 19, at 6 PM for a compelling book talk with acclaimed author Sloane Crosley, in conversation with Nathaniel Rich, as they discuss her bestselling memoir, Grief Is for People. In this deeply personal and poignant work, Crosley explores loss, friendship, and resilience with her signature wit and insight. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear her reflect on grief, memory, and the writing process in an intimate and engaging conversation. 📍 Location: The Garden District Book Shop 📅 Date & Time: Wednesday, March 19 | 6:00 PM 🎟 RSVP now to reserve your spot! ABOUT THE BOOK: Disarmingly witty and poignant, Sloane Crosley’s memoir explores multiple kinds of loss following the death of her closest friend. Grief Is for People is a deeply moving and surprisingly suspenseful portrait of friendship, and a book about loss packed with verve for life. Sloane Crosley is one of our most renowned observers of contemporary behavior, and now the pathos that has been ever present in her trademark wit is on full display. After the pain and confusion of losing her closest friend to suicide, Crosley looks for answers in friends, philosophy, and art, hoping for a framework more useful than the unavoidable stages of grief. For most of her adult life, Sloane and Russell worked together and played together as they navigated the corridors of office life, the literary world, and the dramatic cultural shifts in New York City. One day, while Russell is still alive, Sloane’s apartment is broken into. Along with her most prized possessions, the thief makes off with her sense of security, leaving a mystery in its place. When Russell dies exactly one month later, his suicide propels her on a wild quest to right the unrightable, to explore what constitutes family and possession as the city itself faces the staggering toll brought on by the pandemic. Crosley’s search for truth is frank, darkly funny, and gilded with a resounding empathy. Upending the “grief memoir,” Grief Is for People is the category-defying story of the struggle to hold on to the past without being consumed by it. A modern elegy, it rises precisely to console and challenge our notions of mourning during these grief-stricken times. Information Source: The Garden District Book Shop | eventbrite
