Directed by Marjoleine Boonstra, "De stilte van Mark Rothko" delves into the life and work of this renowned painter, exploring the mysteries behind the intense color fields that characterize his renowned artworks. Through a serene narrative, the documentary reveals Rothko's sources of inspiration and influences, from his Jewish upbringing in Latvia to his encounters with classical sites like Paestum and Pompeii, as well as artists such as Fra Angelico, Matisse, and the surrealists. Despite being labeled as an abstract painter, Rothko's large, vibrant canvases evoke universal human emotions, encompassing themes of tragedy, ecstasy, and demise. Christopher Rothko, the artist's son, brings his father's words to life in this evocative film.
