Cecilia Vicuña: Quipu Gut | Pérez Art Museum Miami

Aug 29, 2024–Aug 3, 2025 (UTC-5)
Miami
Exhibitions
Cecilia Vicuña is a poet and artist who grew up in the Chilean commune of La Florida, in the Maipo Valley. Born to a family of artists and intellectuals, Vicuña grew up hearing about the persecution and incarceration of individuals who struggled for social justice in the wake of increasingly conservative government agendas. While attending the Slade School of Fine Art in London on a British Council Award in 1972–73, a coup d’état led by General Augusto Pinochet, commander-in-chief of the Chilean army, ushered in a seventeen-year military dictatorship. This led Vicuña to remain in London on a self-imposed exile, where she exhibited her work at the Institute of Contemporary Arts and published her first book, Saborami (1973). At the time, she was largely focused on political activism directed against fascism and human rights violations in Chile and other countries.

ULLA VON BRANDENBURG: IN DIALOGUE | The Bass

Sep 4, 2024–Jul 6, 2025 (UTC-5)
Miami Beach
Exhibitions
The Bass Museum of Art announces a new exhibition as part of the 2024-2025 fall season, Ulla von Brandenburg: In Dialogue, on view September 4, 2024 through July 6, 2025. Ulla von Brandenburg, the German-born artist based in Paris, engages with idiosyncratic moments and overlooked figures from the histories of art and culture. Her exhibitions and projects draw a wide range of subjects, including occultism, psychoanalysis, modernist architecture and Hollywood cinema, into contemporary contexts. Ulla von Brandenburg: In Dialogue is a presentation of von Brandenburg’s work paired with The Bass’s recently acquired ceramic mural by the Lebanese-American artist Etel Adnan (1925–2021). A leading figure in contemporary Arab American visual art and literature, Adnan created rich, geometric fields of color in her paintings and drawings, some translated into large-scale murals and tapestries that reflect the artist’s enduring interest in architecture and the built environment. Comparatively, von Brandenburg’s multifaceted practice combines film, textiles, drawings, watercolors and sound into immersive exhibition scenarios where the different art forms harmonize into a cohesive whole (or Gesamtkunstwerk). Ulla von Brandenburg: In Dialogue explores this cross-generational engagement with geometric abstraction—its interplay of circles, squares and triangles—evident in both Adnan’s mural and von Brandenburg’s practice, and staged alongside the rich history of the Ukrainian-born French artist Sonia Delaunay. Here, Adnan’s lyrical abstract mural (Untitled, 2023), at 14 × 21 feet, serves as both a protagonist and theatrical backdrop in von Brandenburg’s exhibition scenography. The works interweave through the language of abstraction and the artists’ shared interests in the social and spatial environment.

One Becomes Many | Pérez Art Museum Miami

Oct 17, 2024–Apr 16, 2026 (UTC-5)
Miami
Exhibitions
One Becomes Many explores the enduring legacies that transcend generations in the works of ten Black Brazilian artists. Through traditional motifs, geometric abstractions, and a deep reverence for Brazilian culture, these artists offer glimpses into a world where resilience is not merely a trait but a sacred inheritance. Central to the exhibition is candomblé—the Afro-Brazilian religion that draws on traditions of West African ethnic groups such as the Yoruba, Fon, and Bantu, as well as some aspects Roman Catholicism. Inspired by ritual practices, these artists pay homage to deities and ancestral spirits, exuding divine potency and wisdom in their works. The reimagined symbolic imagery from candomblé serves as a visual testament to the strength of a people who have endured, persisted, and thrived.

José Parlá: Homecoming | Pérez Art Museum Miami

Nov 14, 2024–Jul 6, 2025 (UTC-5)
Miami
Exhibitions
Born in Miami to Cuban parents, artist José Parlá (b. 1973, Miami; lives in New York) was raised between mainland United States and Puerto Rico. Influenced by his proximity to Caribbean and Latin American countries, he developed an interest in diverse cultural traits, including Cuban music, hip hop, reggae, calligraphy, dance, and urban architecture and its decay, all of which would become recurring themes in his work. Consistent with his blended culture, Parlá is interested in hybrid forms of abstraction. Through a unique mark-making process, grounded in movement and bodily gestures, Parlá produces a painterly stream of consciousness characterized by addition, erasure, and layering. His physical and textural artistic process challenges conventional visual culture. Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) is honored to be hosting Parlá’s first solo museum exhibition in his hometown. Featuring a new series of never-before-seen works and a site-specific mural, José Parlá: Homecoming will ultimately mirror the artist’s studio. An elaborate, two-part exhibition will allow visitors to observe Parlá’s dance-like technique in real time as he paints a site-specific mural for the first iteration of the exhibition. The second iteration will see the museum gallery transformed and converted into Parlá’s studio—a room full of paint-covered tables, a lively Cuban-inspired record collection, and decades of Parla’s archival memorabilia. In 2021, Parlá contracted a life-threatening case of COVID-19—he was hospitalized and endured a four-month coma during which he suffered a stroke and significant brain bleeding. A radical departure from the traditional use of space in a museum, this presentation not only represents a homecoming to Miami, but also marks a return to himself and his practice after this experience. Celebrating the spirit of resilience and returning to one’s roots, José Parlá: Homecoming is a testament to the profound connections among personal history, art, and creative expression. In addition to the completed mural and studio re-creation, the exhibition will also feature a number of recent works Parlá created upon his return to painting. The result is a process-focused exhibition highlighting an expressionistic painter who conscientiously engages with issues relating to Cuban and broader diasporic identity.

Hurvin Anderson: Passenger Opportunity | Pérez Art Museum Miami

Nov 21, 2024–Aug 17, 2025 (UTC-5)
Miami
Exhibitions
Inspired by the murals of Carl Abrahams lining the departures lounge of Kingston Jamaica’s Norman Manley International Airport, Hurvin Anderson presents a new, sixteen-panel, monumental painting in his first solo show at Pérez Art Museum Miami. Mining the space between abstraction and representation in painting, Anderson creates art that is at once steeped in history but also acutely contemporary. Born in Birmingham, England to Jamaican parents of the Windrush Generation, a graduate of the Royal College of Art in London, Anderson’s paintings are grounded in the universal spaces and visual archive of the landscape tradition so much a part of the history of modern western art. Yet, as is demonstrated here, he is also an explorer of what those histories mean in the African diaspora and, more specifically, within the cultural and social traditions of the Caribbean. In 2022, Anderson participated in the Kingston Biennial. While working on that project, he traveled to and from Jamaica through Miami; coming face-to-face with the two murals Abrahams painted on Jamaican history for the airport in 1985. During this time, Abrahams’s murals began resonating with Anderson in a different way. Reflecting on the importance of Jamaican history, and the rich history of the Caribbean as a whole, Anderson began working on ideas for this show while taking these trips. Thinking of what these historical murals mean for immigration, but also as a point of entry and departure for tourism, Anderson developed this new sixteen-panel painting.

Perineal Hydrostatic Jetstream Injury from jet-powered watercraft. Class Description: This presentation will be an interactive, case-based discussion, which will provide participants knowledge regarding perineal / genital injuries caused by the personal watercraft’s (PWC) hydrostatic Jetstream. The focus will be on identifying this type of injury, appropriate triage & transport, initial treatment, and long-term effects. A brief description of PWC engineering and propulsion will be included to better understand injury pattern and causes. Patient cases will help reinforce critical knowledge needed to help identify mechanism and transport destination. Florida has a high rate of PWC use, this injury can be life threatening and devastating if survived. Awareness and rapid identification/transport is critical to better patient outcomes. This session is appropriate for pre-hospital emergency care providers and hospital providers. Presenter: Luis Derosa RN, EMT-P, CBRN Bio: Luis DeRosa Jr. is the Outreach / Injury Prevention Coordinator for the Ryder Trauma Center (Ryder) and Miami Burn Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Ryder is an Adult and Pediatric Level 1 Trauma Center and ABA verified burn center. Luis has been with Jackson since 2007 and has worked in the Emergency Department, Trauma / Burn ICU, and the Trauma Resuscitation Unit (TRU) at Ryder which serves as the entry point for trauma & burn victims throughout Miami-Dade County, South Florida, and Caribbean. This high volume unit is also home to the nation’s only US Army Trauma Training site for Forward Surgical Teams deploying to combat. Luis (non-military) has proudly supported this unique military/civilian partnership throughout his years with army instructor orientation, mock traumas, and team clinical in the TRU. Luis is a licensed Paramedic as well and enjoys working with EMS to improve patient outcomes. He has lead multiple educational EMS initiatives throughout South Florida, with a focus on trauma and burns. One of his initiatives focuses on Recreational Water Sport traumatic injury including his Perineal Hydrostatic Jetstream Injury or “Phji” (pronounced fee-jee) water trauma project, which focuses on the rare and severe MOI caused by the PWC propulsion (pending publication Pan-American Journal of Trauma). To date, he has educated hundreds of Ocean Rescue and EMS providers throughout South Florida, including the US Coast Guard and Florida Fish & Wildlife agencies. He has also presented nationally at the US Lifesaving Association Nat’l Board of Directors Meeting, the Society of Trauma Nurses, and the Emergency Nurses Association conference. He recently achieved a major milestone with the inclusion of Perineal Hydrostatic Jetstream Injury into MDC trauma alert criteria (the Miami Dade County Fire Chief and Medical Directors Committee approved Luis’ recommendations 9/2024). Luis is an ABLS instructor and was selected by the Miami-Dade County Healthcare Coalition Burn Annex Task Force as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) regarding burn mass casualty incidents (BMCI). In 2021, Luis was selected to the ABA’s Advanced Burn Life Support (ABLS) Advisory Committee – helping to review and update the latest (2022) ABLS Provider manual. In 2023, Luis was also selected by the Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing (BCEN) as a subject matter expert (SME) for the Certified Burn Registered Nurse (CBRN) Passing Point Study, which is the final step in developing the world's first-ever burn nursing specialty certification. Luis is also a member of a federal disaster response team (NDMS) Trauma Critical Care Team with multiple disaster and special event deployments. Luis is also active in teaching “Stop the Bleed” to the public and is both an instructor for ATCN and course director for TNCC. Luis has interests in improving documentation and decreasing mouse clicks for nurses in an emergency setting, improving trauma department workflow, and the request for field amputation of the entrapped trauma patient - preparedness is vital for both EMS and Trauma Centers (especially NURSING). On his spare time, Luis enjoys spending time with his wife and 3 Kids to “trauma disconnect.” Occasionally, you can find him on social media educating and engaging those interested in trauma.
