Pewter Casting Course (Mon & Tues, 15 -16 & 22 - 23 July 2024) | London Sculpture Workshop,
Jul 15–Jul 23, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
London
Join the Pewter Casting Course at the London Sculpture Workshop and discover the ancient ‘lost wax method’ of pewter casting. This immersive 4-session course will teach you the art of creating stunning pewter artworks using the versatile and malleable pewter metal. With a focus on the traditional technique of casting, you will have the opportunity to experiment with wax modelling and cast your own unique sculpture.
Pewter, a silver-colored alloy, is the perfect medium for this course. With its low melting point, it can easily be cast on a gas hob. The lead-free pewter we use has a high tin content, making it soft to work with and ideal for hammering and shaping. Traditionally used for cups and plates, pewter is also suitable for casting metal sculptures and creating intricate designs. It complements well with wood and stone, allowing you to explore various artistic possibilities.
Over the course of four days, you will learn the complete casting process. On the first day, you will experiment with different waxes to create a small sculpture for casting. On the second day, you will prepare your wax sculptures for casting by adding casting 'runners' and 'risers' before making plaster moulds. The wax will then be burned out, leaving a negative cavity to be filled with molten pewter. Day three will involve melting and casting the molten pewter into your moulds, followed by chiseling and cleaning the casts on day four. To complete your artwork, you will engage in polishing, patination, welding, and cold working of pewter. Additionally, you will receive instruction on how to set up your own pewter casting works.
The course will be led by the experienced tutor Robert Worley (MA, RCA) and is open to both beginners and those with prior experience. Basic materials are provided, including 1 kilo of pewter. Additional metal used will be charged at £52 per kilo. It is essential to wear old clothes and strong footwear for safety.
Don't miss this unique opportunity to learn the art of pewter casting. Reserve your spot now for the Pewter Casting Course at the London Sculpture Workshop.
